pakrym-oaiandGitHub 768848ab6f Add experimental turn additional context (#24154)
## Summary

Adds experimental `additionalContext` support to `turn/start` and
`turn/steer` so clients can provide ephemeral external context, such as
browser or automation state, without turning that plumbing into a
visible user prompt or triggering user-prompt lifecycle behavior.

## API Shape

The parameter shape is:

```ts
additionalContext?: Record<string, {
  value: string
  kind: "untrusted" | "application"
}> | null
```

Example:

```json
{
  "additionalContext": {
    "browser_info": {
      "value": "Active tab is CI failures.",
      "kind": "untrusted"
    },
    "automation_info": {
      "value": "CI rerun is in progress.",
      "kind": "application"
    }
  }
}
```

The keys are opaque and caller-defined.

## Context Injection

When provided, accepted entries are inserted into model context as
hidden contextual message items, not as visible thread user-message
items.

`kind: "untrusted"` entries are inserted with role `user`:

```text
<external_${key}>${value}</external_${key}>
```

`kind: "application"` entries are inserted with role `developer`:

```text
<${key}>${value}</${key}>
```

Values are not escaped. Each value is truncated to 1k approximate tokens
before wrapping.

For `turn/start`, accepted additional context is inserted before normal
user input. For `turn/steer`, additional context is merged only when the
steer includes non-empty user input; context-only steers still reject as
empty input.

## Dedupe Strategy

`AdditionalContextStore` lives on session state and stores the latest
complete additional-context map.

Each `turn/start` or non-empty `turn/steer` treats its
`additionalContext` as the current complete set of values. Entries are
injected only when the key is new or the exact entry for that key
changed, including `value` or `kind`. After merging, the store is
replaced with the provided map, so omitted keys are removed from the
retained set and can be injected again later if reintroduced.

Omitting `additionalContext`, passing `null`, or passing an empty object
resets the store to empty and injects nothing.

## What Changed

- Threads experimental v2 `additionalContext` through app-server into
core turn start and steer handling.
- Adds separate contextual fragment types for untrusted user-role
context and application developer-role context.
- Uses pending response input items so additional context can be
combined with normal user input without treating it as prompt text.
- Adds integration coverage for start/steer flow, role routing,
dedupe/reset behavior, deletion/re-add behavior, hook-blocked input
behavior, empty context-only steer rejection, external-fragment marker
matching, and truncation.

jif-oaiandGitHub 9271e84b79 feat: add manual and remote_v2 tags to compaction metric (#24608)
## Why
`codex.task.compact` only distinguished `local` vs `remote`, which made
it hard to answer simple counter questions in Statsig. Manual `/compact`
and automatic compaction were collapsed together, and the legacy remote
path was also collapsed with `remote_compaction_v2`.

## What Changed
- route `codex.task.compact` through a shared helper in
`core/src/tasks/mod.rs`
- add a `manual=true|false` tag so manual and automatic compaction can
be counted separately
- split the remote tag into `remote` and `remote_v2`
- emit the metric from the inline auto-compaction path in
`core/src/session/turn.rs` as well as the manual `CompactTask` path in
`core/src/tasks/compact.rs`
- add focused unit coverage for the new tag shapes in
`core/src/tasks/mod_tests.rs`

## Verification
- added unit coverage in `core/src/tasks/mod_tests.rs` covering manual
`remote_v2` tags and automatic `local` tags

04a8580f33 centralize Responses retry policy (#24131)
## Why

#23951 added remote compaction v2 retries, but it left the retry and WS
-> HTTPS fallback behavior duplicated between normal Responses turns and
compaction. This follow-up centralizes the common retry handling so
future changes to fallback, retry delay, retry notifications, and retry
sleep do not have to be kept in sync across both callsites.

## What changed

- Added `core/src/responses_retry.rs` with a shared handler for
retryable Responses stream errors.
- Reused that handler from normal turn sampling and remote compaction
v2.
- Kept each callsite responsible for its retry budget: normal turns
still use `stream_max_retries`, while compaction v2 still uses
`min(stream_max_retries, 2)`.
- Preserved caller-specific behavior around non-retryable errors,
context-window errors, usage-limit errors, and compact-specific final
failure logging.

The shared handler now owns:

- WS -> HTTPS fallback warning emission
- retry delay selection, including server-requested stream retry delay
- retry logging
- first-WebSocket-retry notification suppression
- `Reconnecting... n/max` stream-error notification
- sleeping before the next retry attempt

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-core remote_compact_v2`
- `cargo test -p codex-core websocket_fallback`
- `just fix -p codex-core`

Did not run the full workspace test suite.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 6ad3a83509 [codex] Remove external client session reset plumbing (#24157)
## Why

The turn loop no longer needs to decide when a `ModelClientSession`
should reset its websocket state after compaction. That reset behavior
belongs inside the model client, where the websocket cache and retry
state are owned. The repo guidance now calls this out explicitly so
future changes let the incremental request logic decide whether the
previous request can be reused.

## What Changed

- Removed the `reset_client_session` return value from pre-sampling and
auto-compact helpers in `core/src/session/turn.rs`.
- Changed compaction helpers to return `CodexResult<()>` so callers only
handle success or failure.
- Made `ModelClientSession::reset_websocket_session` private to
`core/src/client.rs`, leaving it callable only from model-client
internals.
- Added `AGENTS.md` guidance not to call `reset_client_session`
unnecessarily.

## Validation

pakrym-oaiandGitHub fbd4efa9ed [codex] Use TurnInput for session task input (#24151)
## Why

The idea here is to erase the difference between initial and followup
inputs to a turn. Followup inputs are already represented as TurnInput.

Eventual goal is not to have explicit on task input at all and pull
everything from input Q.

## What Changed

- Changes `SessionTask::run` and the erased `AnySessionTask::run` path
to accept `Vec<TurnInput>`.
- Wraps user-submitted spawn input as `TurnInput::UserInput` at the
session task start boundary.
- Updates `run_turn` to record initial `TurnInput` using the same hook
and recording path used for pending input.
- Keeps review-specific conversion local to `ReviewTask`, where the
sub-Codex one-shot API still expects `Vec<UserInput>`.
- Moves the synthetic compact prompt into `CompactTask` and starts
compact tasks with empty task input.

## Validation

- `cargo check -p codex-core`
- `just test -p codex-core -E

AbhinavandGitHub eee3e60db3 Add SubagentStop hook (#22873)
# What

<img width="1792" height="1024" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8f81d232-5813-4994-a61d-e42a05a93a3e"
/>

`SubagentStop` runs when a thread-spawned subagent turn is about to
finish. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStop` instead of the
normal root-agent `Stop` hook.

Configured handlers match on `agent_type`. Hook input includes the
normal stop fields plus:

- `agent_id`: the child thread id.
- `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type.
- `agent_transcript_path`: the child subagent transcript path.
- `transcript_path`: the parent thread transcript path.
- `last_assistant_message`: the final assistant message from the child
turn, when available.
- `stop_hook_active`: `true` when the child is already continuing
because an earlier stop-like hook blocked completion.

`SubagentStop` shares the same completion-control semantics as `Stop`,
scoped to the child turn:

- No decision allows the child turn to finish.
- `decision: "block"` with a non-empty `reason` records that reason as
hook feedback and continues the child with that prompt.
- `continue: false` stops the child turn. If `stopReason` is present,
Codex surfaces it as the stop reason.

# Lifecycle Scope

Only thread-spawned subagents run `SubagentStop`.

Internal/system subagents such as Review, Compact, MemoryConsolidation,
and Other do not run normal `Stop` hooks and do not run `SubagentStop`.
This avoids exposing synthetic matcher labels for internal
implementation paths.

# Stack

2. This PR: add `SubagentStop`.
3. #22882: add subagent identity to normal hook inputs.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub f0663fd4fd [codex] Preserve steer input as user input (#23405)
## Why

Steered input was queued as a `ResponseInputItem`, then parsed back into
a user message before recording. That path loses information that only
exists on `UserInput`, such as UI text elements.

This change keeps turn-local pending input typed as either original
`UserInput` or existing response items, so steered user input reaches
user-message recording without being reconstructed from a response item.

## What changed

- Add `TurnInput` for active-turn pending input.
- Queue `Session::steer_input` as `TurnInput::UserInput`.
- Run pending-input hook inspection only for `TurnInput::UserInput`.
- Process drained pending input item by item: accepted items are
recorded, blocked items append hook context and are skipped.
- Remove the pending-input prepend/requeue path.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 9289b7cea8 [codex] Move hook request plumbing into hook runtime (#23388)
## Why

`run_turn` was still hand-building hook payloads and lifecycle events
for a couple of hook paths. Most hook call sites already delegate
request construction and event emission to `hook_runtime`, which keeps
turn orchestration focused on model-flow decisions rather than hook
plumbing.

This also keeps the legacy `after_agent` message extraction next to the
legacy hook dispatch instead of leaving response-item walking in
`run_turn`.

## What changed

- Added `run_stop_hooks` in `hook_runtime` to build `StopRequest`, emit
preview start events, run the hook, and emit completion events.
- Added `run_legacy_after_agent_hook` in `hook_runtime` to build and
dispatch the legacy `AfterAgent` hook payload, including extracting
input messages from response items.
- Updated `run_turn` to call the hook runtime helpers and keep only the
resulting continuation/block/stop decisions inline.
- Removed the repeated pending session-start hook check from the run
loop.

## Validation

- `cargo test -p codex-core hook_runtime`

pakrym-oaiandGitHub ef24ef127f [codex] Allow empty turn/start requests (#23409)
## Why

`turn/start` already accepts an input array on the wire, including an
empty array, but core treated empty input as a no-op before the turn
could reach the model. App-server clients need to be able to start a
real turn even when there is no new user message, for example to let the
model proceed from existing thread context.

## What changed

- Removed the `run_turn` early return that skipped empty-input turns
when there was no pending input.
- Kept empty active-turn steering rejected by moving the `steer_input`
empty-input check until after core has determined whether there is an
active regular turn.
- Empty regular turns now refresh `previous_turn_settings` like other
regular turns, so follow-up context injection state advances
consistently.
- Added an app-server v2 integration test proving `turn/start` with
`input: []` emits started/completed notifications, sends one Responses
request, and does not synthesize an empty user message.

jif-oaiandGitHub 80fdd4688f Add body_after_prefix auto-compact token limit scope (#22870)
## Why

`model_auto_compact_token_limit` has only been able to budget the full
active context. That makes it hard to set a small "growth since
compaction" budget for sessions that preserve a large carried window
prefix: the preserved prefix can consume the whole budget and force
immediate repeated compaction.

This PR adds an opt-in `body_after_prefix` scope so callers can apply
`model_auto_compact_token_limit` to sampled output and later growth
after the current carried prefix, while still forcing compaction before
the full model context window is exhausted.

## What changed

- Adds `AutoCompactTokenLimitScope` with the existing `total` behavior
as the default and a new `body_after_prefix` mode:
[`config_types.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/973806b1cb35792555bead994cb3ed94656eb171/codex-rs/protocol/src/config_types.rs#L24-L37).
- Threads `model_auto_compact_token_limit_scope` through config loading,
`Config`, `core-api`, and app-server v2 schema/TypeScript generation.
- Records the first observed input-token count for a `body_after_prefix`
compaction window and uses it as the baseline when deciding whether the
scoped auto-compaction budget is exhausted:
[`turn.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/973806b1cb35792555bead994cb3ed94656eb171/codex-rs/core/src/session/turn.rs#L743-L781).
- Keeps a hard context-window cap in `body_after_prefix`, so scoped
budgeting cannot let the active context overrun the usable window.

## Verification

Added compact-suite coverage for the two key behaviors:
`body_after_prefix` does not re-compact just because the carried prefix
is larger than the scoped budget, and it still compacts when the total
active context reaches the configured context window:
[`compact.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/973806b1cb35792555bead994cb3ed94656eb171/codex-rs/core/tests/suite/compact.rs#L3003-L3128).

jif-oaiandGitHub 05e171094d Remove ToolsConfig from tool planning (#22835)
## Why

`codex-tools` is meant to hold reusable tool primitives, but
`ToolsConfig` had become a second copy of core runtime decisions instead
of a small shared contract. It carried provider capabilities, auth/model
gates, permission and environment state, web/search/image feature gates,
multi-agent settings, and goal availability from core into `codex-tools`
([definition](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/22dd9ad3929253ed24d7ee4f10f238e95ab25f37/codex-rs/tools/src/tool_config.rs#L97),
[stored on each
`TurnContext`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/22dd9ad3929253ed24d7ee4f10f238e95ab25f37/codex-rs/core/src/session/turn_context.rs#L87)).
Every session/context variant then had to build and mutate that snapshot
before assembling tools.

This PR removes that master object instead of renaming it. Tool planning
now reads the live `TurnContext`, where `codex-core` already owns those
decisions, while `codex-tools` keeps only reusable primitives and a
generic `ToolSetBuilder`/`ToolSet` accumulator.

## What Changed

- Removed `ToolsConfig` / `ToolsConfigParams` from `codex-tools`; the
crate keeps the shared helpers that still belong there, including
request-user-input mode selection, shell backend/type resolution,
`UnifiedExecShellMode`, and `ToolEnvironmentMode`.
- Replaced config-snapshot planning with `ToolRouter::from_turn_context`
and a `spec_plan` pipeline over `CoreToolPlanContext`, deriving provider
capabilities, auth gates, model support, feature gates, environment
count, goal support, multi-agent options, web search, and image
generation from the authoritative turn state.
- Added generic `codex_tools::ToolSetBuilder` / `ToolSet`, plus the
small core adapter needed to accumulate `CoreToolRuntime` values and
hosted model specs.
- Added the `tool_family::shell` registration module and moved
shell/unified-exec/memory accounting call sites to read the narrow
per-turn fields directly.
- Narrowed `TurnContext` to the remaining explicit per-turn fields
needed by planning: `available_models`, `unified_exec_shell_mode`, and
`goal_tools_supported`.
- Reworked MCP exposure and tool-search setup so deferred/direct MCP
behavior is driven by the current turn rather than a precomputed config
snapshot.
- Replaced the large expected-spec fixture tests with focused
behavior-level coverage for shell tools, environments, goal and
agent-job gates, MCP direct/deferred exposure, tool search,
request-plugin-install, code mode, multi-agent mode, hosted tools, and
extension executor dispatch.

Eric TrautandGitHub a668379abf [5 of 7] Replace OverrideTurnContext with ThreadSettings (#22508)
**Stack position:** [5 of 7]

## Summary

This PR adds `Op::ThreadSettings`, a queued settings-only update
mechanism for changing stored thread settings without starting a new
turn. It also removes the legacy `Op::OverrideTurnContext` in the same
layer, so reviewers can see the replacement and deletion together.

## Changes

- Add `Op::ThreadSettings` for settings-only queued updates.
- Emit `ThreadSettingsApplied` with the effective thread settings
snapshot after core applies an update.
- Route settings-only updates through the same submission queue as user
input.
- Migrate remaining `OverrideTurnContext` tests and callers to the
queued `Op::ThreadSettings` path.
- Delete `Op::OverrideTurnContext` from the core protocol and submission
loop.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 9e9a62dc28 [codex] Extract turn skill and plugin injections (#23396)
## Why

`run_turn` had accumulated the turn-scoped skill, plugin, app, MCP,
connector-selection, and analytics setup inline. That made the
orchestration path harder to scan even though the actual turn item
injection still needs to stay in `run_turn` so ordering is explicit.

## What changed

This extracts that setup into `build_skills_and_plugins`, which returns
the combined injection `ResponseItem`s and the explicitly enabled
connector IDs. `run_turn` now keeps the required orchestration pieces:
context update recording, user input handling, connector selection
merge, and the explicit per-item `record_conversation_items` calls for
injection items.

The refactor keeps the change LOC-neutral in `core/src/session/turn.rs`
and preserves the existing response-item based injection path.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 17d552fb4d [codex] Remove external websocket session resets (#23384)
## Why

Compaction now installs replacement history inside the session, but the
turn and compaction callers were still reaching into
`ModelClientSession` to reset websocket transport state after that
install. That made a transport-level reset part of the compaction API
even though websocket incremental request selection already checks
whether the next request is a strict extension of the previous one and
falls back to a full `response.create` when it is not.

## What changed

- Removed the compaction-side calls to `reset_websocket_session` from
`compact.rs` and `session/turn.rs`.
- Simplified pre-sampling and mid-turn compaction helpers so they return
`CodexResult<()>` instead of carrying a reset flag.
- Made `ModelClientSession::reset_websocket_session` private to

pakrym-oaiandGitHub afa0101ae2 [codex] Move pending input into input queue (#22728)
## Why

Pending model input was split across `Session`, `TurnState`, and the
agent mailbox. That made it easy for new paths to manage queued user
input or mailbox delivery outside the intended ownership boundary.

This PR consolidates the model-facing input lifecycle behind the session
input queue so turn-local pending input, next-turn queued items, and
mailbox delivery coordination are owned in one place.

## What Changed

- Added `session/input_queue.rs` to own pending input queues and mailbox
delivery coordination.
- Removed the standalone `agent/mailbox.rs` channel wrapper and store
mailbox items directly in the input queue.
- Moved pending-input mutations off `TurnState`; `TurnState` now exposes
the queue-owned storage directly for now.
- Routed abort cleanup, mailbox delivery phase changes, next-turn queued
items, and active-turn pending input through `InputQueue`.
- Boxed stack-heavy agent resume/fork startup futures that the refactor
pushed over the default test stack.
- Updated session, task, goal, stream-event, and multi-agent call sites
and tests to use the new queue ownership.

Eric TrautandGitHub 0d344aca9b goal: pause continuation loops on usage limits and blockers (#23094)
Addresses #22833, #22245, #23067

## Why
`/goal` can keep synthesizing turns even when the next turn cannot make
meaningful progress. Hard usage exhaustion can replay failing turns, and
repeated permission or external-resource blockers can keep burning
tokens while waiting for user or system intervention.

## What changed
- Add resumable `blocked` and `usageLimited` goal states. As with
`paused`, goal continuation stops with these states.
- Move to `usageLimited` after usage-limit failures.
- Allow the built-in `update_goal` tool to set `blocked` only under
explicit repeated-impasse guidance. Updated goal continuation prompt to
specify that agent should use `blocked` only when it has made at least
three attempts to get past an impasse.

Most of the files touched by this PR are because of the small app server
protocol update.

## Validation

I manually reproduced a number of situations where an agent can run into
a true impasse and verified that it properly enters `blocked` state. I
then resumed and verified that it once again entered `blocked` state
several turns later if the impasse still exists.

I also manually reproduced the usage-limit condition by creating a
simulated responses API endpoint that returns 429 errors with the
appropriate error message. Verified that the goal runtime properly moves
the goal into `usageLimited` state and TUI UI updates appropriately.
Verified that `/goal resume` resumes (and immediately goes back into
`ussageLImited` state if appropriate).

## Follow-up PRs

starr-openaiandGitHub 9286ff2805 Fix remote turn diff display roots (#23261)
## Why

`TurnDiffTracker` computes a display root so turn diffs can be rendered
repo-relative. For remote exec-server turns, the selected turn `cwd` may
exist only inside the selected environment, but `run_turn` was
discovering the git root through the local host filesystem. When that
lookup failed, nested remote-session diffs fell back to the nested `cwd`
and showed `/tmp/...`-prefixed paths instead of repo-relative paths.

## What changed

- Resolve the diff display root from the primary selected turn
environment when one exists, using that environment's filesystem and
`cwd`.
- Add `codex_git_utils::get_git_repo_root_with_fs(...)` so git-root
discovery can run against an `ExecutorFileSystem`, including remote
environments.
- Reuse that helper from `resolve_root_git_project_for_trust(...)` and
add coverage for `.git` gitdir-pointer detection.

## Validation

- Devbox Bazel: `//codex-rs/core:core-unit-tests

- Devbox Docker-backed remote-env repro: `//codex-rs/core:core-all-test

jif-oaiandGitHub 0322ac3df8 [codex] Use compaction_trigger item for remote compaction v2 (#22809)
## Why

Remote compaction v2 was still using `context_compaction` as both the
request trigger and the compacted output shape. The Responses API now
has the landed contract for this flow: Codex sends a dedicated `{
"type": "compaction_trigger" }` input item, and the backend returns the
standard `compaction` output item with encrypted content.

This aligns the v2 path with that wire contract while preserving the
existing local compacted-history post-processing behavior.

## What changed

- Add `ResponseItem::CompactionTrigger` and regenerate the app-server
protocol schema fixtures.
- Send `compaction_trigger` from `remote_compaction_v2` instead of a
payload-less `context_compaction`.
- Collect exactly one backend `compaction` output item, then reuse the
existing compacted-history rebuilding path.
- Treat the trigger item as a transient request marker rather than model
output or persisted rollout/memory content.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 4454e1411b Deprecate TurnContext cwd and resolve_path (#22519)
## Why

`TurnContext::cwd` and `TurnContext::resolve_path` are being phased out
in favor of using the selected turn environment cwd directly.
Deprecating both APIs makes any new direct dependency visible while
preserving the existing migration path for current callers.

## What Changed

- Marked `TurnContext::cwd` and `TurnContext::resolve_path` as
deprecated with guidance to use the selected turn environment cwd
instead.
- Added exact `#[allow(deprecated)]` suppressions at each existing
direct usage site, including tests, rather than adding crate-wide
suppression.
- Kept the change behavior-preserving: current cwd reads, writes, and
path resolution continue to use the same values.

jif-oaiandGitHub 9c5dfa7b1a Refactor extension tools onto shared ToolExecutor (#22369)
## Why

Extension tools were split across two public runtime contracts:
`codex-tool-api` exposed `ToolBundle` plus its own call/spec/error
types, while core native tools used `codex_tools::ToolExecutor`. That
made contributed tool specs and execution behavior easy to drift apart
and added another crate boundary for what should be one executable-tool
seam.

This PR makes `ToolExecutor` the single runtime contract and keeps
extension-specific pinning in `codex-extension-api`.

## Remaining todo

https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22369/changes#diff-b935ea8245c3ce568a30cff660175fa6390b66b872ae409e1e2e965738250741R5
Either generic `Invocation` or sub-extract the `ToolCall` and clean
`ToolInvocation`

## What changed

- Removed the `codex-tool-api` workspace crate and its dependencies from
core and `codex-extension-api`.
- Made `codex_tools::ToolExecutor` object-safe with `async_trait` so
extension contributors can return a dyn executor.
- Added the extension-facing aliases under
`ext/extension-api/src/contributors/tools.rs`, including
`ExtensionToolExecutor = dyn ToolExecutor<ToolCall, Output =
ExtensionToolOutput>`.
- Changed `ToolContributor::tools` to return extension executors
directly instead of `ToolBundle`s.
- Updated core’s extension tool handler/registry/router path to adapt
those extension executors into the existing native `ToolInvocation`
runtime path.
- Added focused coverage for extension tools being registered,
model-visible, dispatchable, and not replacing built-in tools.

sayan-oaiandGitHub 2304ec45ca Remove unavailable MCP placeholder tool backfill (#22439)
## Why

`UnavailableDummyTools` kept synthetic placeholder tools alive for
historical tool calls whose backing MCP tool was no longer available.
That path adds stale model-visible tool specs and special routing at the
point where unavailable MCP calls should use ordinary current-tool
handling. This removes the runtime backfill instead of preserving a
second compatibility lane.

## Is it safe to remove?

The unavailable tools were added in #17853 after a CS issue when a
previously-called MCP tool failed to load and was omitted from the CS
spec. Now that we have tool search, I think this is resolved:
- API merges tools from previous TST output into effective tool set so
theyre always in CS spec
- if an MCP tool surfaced by TST later becomes unavailable, the model
can still call it and it will just return model-visible error
- both TST output and function call output are dropped on compaction so
model will not remember old calls to MCP post compaction

## What changed

- Delete unavailable-tool collection, placeholder handler, router/spec
plumbing, and obsolete placeholder coverage.
- Keep `features.unavailable_dummy_tools` as a removed no-op feature
tombstone so existing configs still parse cleanly.
- Add an integration-style `tool_search` regression test showing that a
deferred MCP tool surfaced through `tool_search` still routes through
MCP and returns a model-visible tool-call error rather than `unsupported
call`.

## Verification

Andrei EternalandGitHub fbfbfe5fc5 hooks: use new session IDs instead of thread IDs for hooks, apply parent's session ID to subagents' hooks (#22268)
## Why

hook semantics treat `session_id` as shared across a root session and
its subagents. Codex hooks were still emitting the current thread ID,
which made spawned agents look like independent sessions and made it
harder for hook integrations to correlate work across a root thread and
its spawned helpers

This change makes hooks use Codex's existing shared session identity so
hook `session_id` matches the root-thread session across spawned
subagents.

## What Changed

- switch hook payloads to use the existing shared session identity from
core instead of the current thread ID
- cover all hook surfaces that expose `session_id`, including
`SessionStart`, tool hooks, compact hooks, prompt-submit hooks, stop
hooks, and legacy after-agent dispatch

TomandGitHub c51c65ad09 Unify thread metadata updates above store (#22236)
- make ThreadStore::update_thread_metadata accept a broad range of
metadata patches
- keep ThreadStore::append_items as raw canonical history append (no
metadata side effects)
- in the local store, write these metadata updates to a combination of
sqlite and rollout jsonl files for backwards-compat. It special cases
which fields need to go into jsonl vs sqlite vs whatever, confining the
awkwardness to just this implementation
- in remote stores we can simply persist the metadata directly to a
database, no special casing required.
- move the "implicit metadata updates triggered by appending rollout
items" from the RolloutRecorder (which is local-threadstore-specific) to
the LiveThread layer above the ThreadStore, inside of a private helper
utility called ThreadMetadataSync. LiveThread calls ThreadStore
append_items and update_metadata separately.
- Add a generic update metadata method to ThreadManager that works on
both live threads and "cold" threads
- Call that ThreadManager method from app server code, so app server
doesn't need to worry about whether the thread is live or not

pakrym-oaiandGitHub ed5944ba1d Simplify MCP tool handler plumbing (#21595)
## Why
The MCP tool path had accumulated a few core-owned special cases: a
dedicated payload variant, resolver plumbing, a legacy `AfterToolUse`
translation path, and a side channel for parallel-call metadata. That
made `ToolRegistry` and the spec builder know more about MCP than they
needed to.

This change moves MCP-specific execution details back onto `ToolInfo`
and `McpHandler` so `codex-core` can treat MCP calls like normal
function calls while still preserving MCP-specific dispatch and
telemetry behavior where it belongs.

## What changed
- removed `resolve_mcp_tool_info`, `ToolPayload::Mcp`, `ToolKind`, and
the remaining registry-side MCP resolver path
- stored MCP routing metadata directly on `McpHandler` and `ToolInfo`,
including `supports_parallel_tool_calls`
- deleted the legacy `AfterToolUse` consumer in `core`, which removes
the need for handler-specific `after_tool_use_payload` implementations
- switched tool-result telemetry to handler-provided tags and kept
MCP-specific dispatch payload construction inside the handler
- simplified tool spec planning/building by passing `ToolInfo` directly
and dropping the direct/deferred MCP wrapper structs and the
parallel-server side table

15e79f3c26 [codex] Harden overflow auto-compaction recovery (#22141)
## Why
Dogfooder feedback exposed two correctness gaps in normal-loop overflow
recovery:

1. a sampling request that hit `ContextWindowExceeded` could keep
re-entering auto-compaction indefinitely if the compacted retry still
did not fit, and
2. local compact-history rebuilds flattened user messages down to text,
so an overflowing `[image, "what is this?"]` turn could be retried
without the image after compaction.

That means recovery could either fail to terminate cleanly or proceed
with a materially weakened version of the user request.

## What changed
- Move normal-loop `ContextWindowExceeded` handling into the sampling
retry loop, so successful rescue compaction consumes the provider retry
budget instead of creating an unbounded outer-turn loop.
- Keep compacted user-history rebuilds structured:
`collect_user_messages` now carries user `UserInput` content rather than
flattened strings, and `build_compacted_history` reconstructs full user
messages from that structured representation.
- Preserve image inputs while retaining the existing text-budget
truncation behavior for compacted user history.
- Preserve existing compaction-task failure handling and client-session
reset behavior while bounding repeated overflow retries.
- Add focused regression coverage for:
  - recovery after a normal-loop overflow,
  - retry-budget exhaustion after repeated overflow,
  - local recovery preserving image + text input,
  - remote recovery preserving image + text input,
  - remote compaction v2 preserving image + text input, and
  - compaction failure still terminating cleanly.

The main behavior changes are in `codex-rs/core/src/session/turn.rs` and
`codex-rs/core/src/compact.rs`.

## Verification
- Not run locally; relying on PR CI for this update.

jif-oaiandGitHub 672cc1f669 feat: wire extension tool bundles into core (#22147)
## Why

This is the next narrow step toward moving concrete tool families out of
core. After #22138 introduced `codex-tool-api`, we still needed a real
end-to-end seam that lets an extension own an executable tool definition
once and have core install it without the temporary `extension-api`
wrapper or a dependency on `codex-tools`.

`codex-tool-api` is the small extension-facing execution contract, while
`codex-tools` still has a different job: host-side shared tool metadata
and planning logic that is not “run this contributed tool”, like spec
shaping, namespaces, discovery, code-mode augmentation, and
MCP/dynamic-to-Responses API conversion

## What changed

- Moved the shared leaf tool-spec and JSON Schema types into
`codex-tool-api`, so the executable contract now lives with
[`ToolBundle`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/c538758095337d4fe0a52a172363ccede4066bda/codex-rs/tool-api/src/bundle.rs#L19-L70).
- Replaced the temporary extension-side tool wrapper with direct
`ToolBundle` use in `codex-extension-api`.
- Taught core to collect contributed bundles, include them in spec
planning, register them through
[`ToolRegistryBuilder::register_tool_bundle`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/c538758095337d4fe0a52a172363ccede4066bda/codex-rs/core/src/tools/registry.rs#L653-L667),
and dispatch them through the existing router/runtime path.
- Added focused coverage for contributed tools becoming model-visible
and dispatchable, plus spec-planning coverage for contributed function
and freeform tools.

## Verification

- Added `extension_tool_bundles_are_model_visible_and_dispatchable` in
`core/src/tools/router_tests.rs`.
- Added spec-plan coverage in `core/src/tools/spec_plan_tests.rs` for
contributed extension bundles.

## Why

PR #21460 reverted the earlier move of skills change watching from

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 857e731478 [codex] Remove string-keyed MCP tool maps (#21454)
## Summary

This PR removes the synthetic `HashMap<String, ToolInfo>` keys from MCP
tool discovery. `McpConnectionManager::list_all_tools()` now returns
normalized `Vec<ToolInfo>`, and downstream code derives identity from
`ToolInfo::canonical_tool_name()`.

The motivation is to keep model-visible tool identity on
`ToolName`/`ToolInfo` instead of parallel string map keys, so future
namespace changes do not have to preserve otherwise-unused lookup keys.

## Changes

- Rename the MCP normalization path from `qualify_tools` to
`normalize_tools_for_model` and return tool values directly.
- Flow MCP tool lists through connectors, plugin injection, router/spec
building, code mode, and tool search as vectors/slices.

matters.

b2268999fe feat: make built-in MCPs first-class runtime servers (#21356)
## DISCLAIMER
This is experimental and no production service must rely on this

## Why

Built-in MCPs are product-owned runtime capabilities, but they were
previously flattened into the same config-backed stdio path as
user-configured servers. That made them depend on a hidden `codex
builtin-mcp` re-exec path, exposed them through config-oriented CLI
flows, and erased distinctions the runtime needs to preserve—most
notably whether an MCP call should count as external context for
memory-mode pollution.

## What changed

- Model product-owned built-ins separately from config-backed MCP
servers via `BuiltinMcpServer` and `EffectiveMcpServer`.
- Launch built-ins in process through a reusable async transport instead
of the hidden `builtin-mcp` stdio subcommand.
- Keep config-oriented CLI operations such as `codex mcp
list/get/login/logout` scoped to configured servers, while merging
built-ins only into the effective runtime server set.
- Retain server metadata after launch so parallel-tool support and
context classification come from the live server set; built-in
`memories` is now classified as local Codex state rather than external
context.

## Test plan

- `cargo test -p codex-core --test suite

pakrym-oaiandGitHub d5eea229cc Move skills watcher to app-server (#21287)
## Why

Skills update notifications are app-server API behavior, but the watcher
lived in `codex-core` and surfaced through
`EventMsg::SkillsUpdateAvailable`. Moving the watcher out keeps core
focused on thread execution and lets app-server own both cache
invalidation and the `skills/changed` notification.

## What changed

- Added an app-server-owned skills watcher that watches local skill
roots, clears the shared skills cache, and emits `skills/changed`
directly.
- Registers skill watches from the common app-server thread listener
attach path, including direct starts, resumes, and app-server-observed
child or forked threads.
- Stores the `WatchRegistration` on `ThreadState`, so listener
replacement, thread teardown, idle unload, and app-server shutdown
deregister by dropping the RAII guard.
- Removed `EventMsg::SkillsUpdateAvailable`, the core watcher, and the

Clark DuVallandGitHub 346070a424 Route opted-in MCP elicitations through Guardian (#19431)
# Motivation

Browser Use origin-access prompts are MCP elicitations, not direct
tool-call approval prompts, so they were bypassing the Guardian approval
path. We need a generic opt-in that lets eligible MCP elicitations use
Guardian when the current turn already routes approvals there.

# Description

Add a generic elicitation reviewer hook in codex-mcp and wire codex-core
to pass a Guardian reviewer callback when creating the MCP connection
manager. The reviewer validates explicit mcp_tool_call opt-in metadata,
builds a Guardian MCP tool-call review request from
server/tool/connector metadata and tool params, and maps Guardian
approval, denial, timeout, and cancellation decisions back to MCP
elicitation responses.

The new option to trigger this in the `_meta` object is:
```
pakrym-oaiandGitHub 2004173cd7 Move message history out of core (#21278)
## Why
Message history was implemented inside `codex-core` and surfaced through
core protocol ops and `SessionConfiguredEvent` fields even though the
current consumer is TUI-local prompt recall. That made core own UI
history persistence and exposed `history_log_id` / `history_entry_count`
through surfaces that app-server and other clients do not need.
This change moves message history persistence out of core and keeps the
recall plumbing local to the TUI.
## What changed
- Added a new `codex-message-history` crate for appending, looking up,
trimming, and reading metadata from `history.jsonl`.
- Removed core protocol history ops/events: `AddToHistory`,
pakrym-oaiandGitHub 2c1a361a2e [codex] Move thread naming to app server (#21260)
## Why
Thread names are app-server metadata now, backed by the thread store and
sqlite state database. Keeping a core `SetThreadName` op plus a rollout
`thread_name_updated` event made rename persistence live in the wrong
layer and required historical replay support for an event that new
app-server flows should not write.
## What changed
- Removed `Op::SetThreadName` and `EventMsg::ThreadNameUpdated` from the
core protocol and deleted the core handler path that appended rename
events to rollouts.
- Updated app-server `thread/name/set` so both loaded and unloaded
threads write through thread-store metadata and app-server emits
`thread/name/updated` notifications.
- Updated local thread-store name metadata updates to write sqlite title
metadata and the legacy thread-name index without appending rollout
events.
- Removed state extraction and rollout handling for the deleted
thread-name event.
## Validation
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server thread_name_updated_broadcasts`
- `cargo test -p codex-app-server
AbhinavandGitHub 13be504063 revert legacy notify deprecation (#21152)
# Why
Revert #20524 for now because the computer use plugin has not migrated
off legacy `notify` yet. Keeping the deprecation in place today would
show users a warning before the plugin path is ready to move, so this
rolls the change back until that migration is complete.
# What
- revert the legacy `notify` deprecation change from #20524
- restore the prior `notify` behavior and remove the temporary
deprecation metrics/docs from that change
Once the computer use plugin has migrated, we can land the same
deprecation again.
charley-openaiandGitHub a6599b8202 Add reasoning effort to turn tracing spans (#20060)
Why
#19432 added token usage to the turn and response spans. This follow-up
adds the configured reasoning effort so performance traces can be
filtered by model effort.
What Changed
- Adds `codex.turn.reasoning_effort` to the turn span.
- Adds `codex.request.reasoning_effort` to `handle_responses`.
- Extends the span test to cover explicit `high` effort with token
usage.
d927f61208 feat: add remote compaction v2 Responses client path (#20773)
## Why
This adds the `remote_compaction_v2` client path so remote compaction
can run through the normal Responses stream and install a
`context_compaction` item that trigger a compaction.
The goal is to migrate some of the compaction logic on the client side
We keeps the v2 transport behind a feature flag while letting follow-up
requests reuse the compacted context instead of falling back to the
legacy compaction item shape.
## What changed
- add `ResponseItem::ContextCompaction` and refresh the generated
app-server / schema / TypeScript fixtures that expose response items on
the wire
- add `core/src/compact_remote_v2.rs` to send compaction through the
standard streamed Responses client, require exactly one
`context_compaction` output item, and install that item into compacted
history
- route manual compact and auto-compaction through the v2 path when
`remote_compaction_v2` is enabled, while keeping the existing remote
compaction path as the fallback
- preserve the new item type across history retention, follow-up request
construction, telemetry, rollout persistence, and rollout-trace
normalization
- add targeted coverage for the feature flag, `context_compaction`
serialization, rollout-trace normalization, and remote-compaction
follow-up behavior
## Verification
- added protocol tests for `context_compaction`
serialization/deserialization in `protocol/src/models.rs`
- added rollout-trace coverage for `context_compaction` normalization in
`rollout-trace/src/reducer/conversation_tests.rs`
- added remote compaction integration coverage for v2 follow-up reuse
and mixed compaction output streams in
`core/tests/suite/compact_remote.rs`
Matthew ZengandGitHub f88701f5c8 [tool_suggest] More prompt polishes. (#20566)
Tool suggest still misfires when model needs tool_search, updating the
prompts to further disambiguate it:
- [x] rename it from `tool_suggest` to `request_plugin_install`
- [x] rephrase "suggestion" to "install" in the tool descriptions.
- [x] disambiguate "the tool" vs "the plugin/connector".
Tested with the Codex App and verified it still works.
pakrym-oaiandGitHub aed74e5ee4 [codex] Emit image view as core item (#20512)
## Why
Image-view results should be represented as a core-produced turn item
instead of being reconstructed by app-server. At the same time, existing
rollout/history paths still understand the legacy `ViewImageToolCall`
event, so this keeps that event as compatibility output generated from
the new item lifecycle.
## What changed
- Added `TurnItem::ImageView` to `codex-protocol`.
- Emitted image-view item start/completion directly from the core
`view_image` handler.
- Kept `ViewImageToolCall` as a legacy event and generate it from
completed `TurnItem::ImageView` items.
- Kept `thread_history.rs` on the legacy `ViewImageToolCall` replay
path, with `ImageView` item lifecycle events ignored there.
- Updated app-server protocol conversion, rollout persistence, and
affected exhaustive event matches for the new item plus legacy fan-out
shape.
AbhinavandGitHub 78baa20780 deprecate legacy notify (#20524)
# Why
`notify` is the remaining compatibility surface from the legacy hook
implementation. The newer lifecycle hook engine now owns the active hook
system, so we should start steering users away from adding new `notify`
configs before removing the old path entirely. This also adds a
lightweight watchpoint for the deprecation so we can see how much legacy
usage remains before the clean drop.
# What
- emit a startup deprecation notice when a non-empty `notify` command is
configured
- emit `codex.notify.configured` when a session starts with legacy
`notify` configured
- emit `codex.notify.run` when the legacy notify path fires after a
completed turn
- mark `notify` as deprecated in the config schema and repo docs
- remove the orphaned `codex-rs/hooks/src/user_notification.rs` file
that is no longer compiled
- add regression coverage for the new deprecation notice
# Next steps
A follow-up PR can remove the legacy notify path entirely once we are
ready for the clean drop. Before then, we can watch
`codex.notify.configured` and `codex.notify.run` to understand the
deprecation impact and remaining active usage. The cleanup PR should
then delete the `notify` config field, the `legacy_notify`
implementation, the old compatibility dispatch types and callsites that
only exist for the legacy path, and the remaining compatibility
docs/tests.
# Testing
- `cargo test -p codex-hooks`
- `cargo test -p codex-config`
- `cargo test -p codex-core emits_deprecation_notice_for_notify`
pakrym-oaiandGitHub f50c02d7bc [codex] Remove unused event messages (#20511)
## Why
Several legacy `EventMsg` variants were still emitted or mapped even
though clients either ignored them or had moved to item/lifecycle
events. `Op::Undo` had also degraded to an unavailable shim, so this
removes that dead task path instead of preserving a command that cannot
do useful work.
`McpStartupComplete`, `WebSearchBegin`, and `ImageGenerationBegin` are
intentionally kept because useful consumers still depend on them: MCP
startup completion drives readiness behavior, and the begin events let
app-server/core consumers surface in-progress web-search and
image-generation items before the final payload arrives.
## What Changed
- Removed weak legacy event variants and payloads from `codex-protocol`,
including legacy agent deltas, background events, and undo lifecycle
events.
- Kept/restored `EventMsg::McpStartupComplete`,
`EventMsg::WebSearchBegin`, and `EventMsg::ImageGenerationBegin` with
serializer and emission coverage.
- Updated core, rollout, MCP server, app-server thread history,
review/delegate filtering, and tests to rely on the useful replacement
events that remain.
- Removed `Op::Undo`, `UndoTask`, the undo test module, and stale TUI
slash-command comments.
- Stopped agent job/background progress and compaction retry notices
from emitting `BackgroundEvent` payloads.
## Verification
- `cargo check -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol -p
codex-core -p codex-rollout -p codex-rollout-trace -p codex-mcp-server`
- `cargo test -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol -p
- `just fix -p codex-protocol -p codex-app-server-protocol -p codex-core
-p codex-rollout -p codex-rollout-trace -p codex-mcp-server`
- Earlier coverage on this PR also included `codex-mcp`, `codex-tui`,
core library tests, MCP/plugin/delegate/review/agent job tests, and MCP
startup TUI tests.
