  • fix(tui): clarify footer shortcut overlay hints (#25625)
    ## Why
    
    The TUI shortcut overlay used static labels for `Tab` and `Ctrl+C`, even
    though both keys change behavior while a task is running. That made the
    visible help misleading: idle `Tab` submits rather than queues, and
    active-turn `Ctrl+C` interrupts rather than exits.
    
    Closes #25531.
    Closes #25564.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Pass task-running state into the shortcut overlay renderer.
    - Render `Tab` as `submit message` while idle and `queue message` while
    work is running.
    - Render `Ctrl+C` as `exit` while idle and `interrupt` while work is
    running.
    - Add snapshot coverage for the active-work shortcut overlay and update
    idle overlay snapshots.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Start Codex and open the shortcut overlay with `?` while no task is
    running.
    2. Confirm the overlay shows `tab to submit message` and `ctrl + c to
    exit`.
    3. Start a task, then open or keep the shortcut overlay visible while
    work is running.
    4. Confirm the overlay shows `tab to queue message` and `ctrl + c to
    interrupt`.
    5. Type a follow-up prompt during active work and press `Tab`; confirm
    it queues rather than submitting immediately.
    
    Targeted tests:
    
    - `just test -p codex-tui footer_snapshots`
    - `just test -p codex-tui footer_mode_snapshots`
    
    ## Validation Notes
    
    `just test -p codex-tui` currently has two unrelated guardian
    feature-flag test failures on this base:

    could not run locally because the prebuilt wrapper requires `dotslash`;
    the touched Rust diff was manually inspected for opaque positional
    literals.
  • Add reasoning-only status surface item (#25504)
    Closes #24886.
    
    ## Why
    Users can configure the TUI status line and terminal title with
    `model-with-reasoning`, but issue #24886 asks for a compact
    reasoning-only item. That lets a setup show just `default`, `low`,
    `medium`, `high`, or `xhigh` without repeating the model name.
    
    ## What changed
    - Added a `reasoning` item for `/statusline` and `/title` setup flows.
    - Rendered the item from the effective reasoning effort, including
    collaboration-mode overrides.
    - Registered `reasoning` with `codex doctor` so Codex-generated
    terminal-title config is not reported as invalid.
    - Updated TUI setup snapshots so the picker previews include the new
    item.
  • Reset slash popup selection when filter changes (#25492)
    ## Summary
    
    Fixes #25295.
    
    The slash-command popup reused its previous `ScrollState` when the
    composer filter token changed. After scrolling the full `/` command
    list, typing a narrower filter such as `/st` could clamp the stale
    selection into the filtered results and highlight the wrong command.
    
    This resets the popup selection and viewport only when the parsed filter
    token changes, so normal arrow navigation is preserved while new filters
    start at the first match.
  • Allow paste in searchable selection menus (#25400)
    ## Summary
    
    I frequently want to be able to paste into the searchable menu -- the
    most common use-case here is when specifying an upstream for a
    `/review`, where I copy the upstream from an open terminal.
  • feat(tui): restore output-free cancelled prompts (#25316)
    ## TL;DR
    
    When you press Esc or Ctrl+C after sending a prompt but before any
    output was rendering, it restores the last composer and the message.
    
    ## Summary
    
    Cancelling a prompt immediately after submission should behave like
    returning to edit that prompt, not like discarding the user's draft.
    Today, pressing `Esc` or `Ctrl+C` before Codex responds leaves the
    submitted prompt in the transcript and returns an empty composer,
    forcing the user to recall or retype it.
    
    When an interrupted turn has not produced substantive visible output,
    restore its submitted prompt directly into the composer and roll back
    that latest turn. This also covers the first prompt in a fresh thread,
    before the TUI has retained a local user-history cell. The restored
    draft keeps its text, image attachments, and active collaboration mode
    so it can be edited and resubmitted in place.
    
    Restoration is intentionally suppressed once the turn has produced
    user-visible activity such as assistant output, tool work, hooks, or
    patches. A transient thinking status does not make the prompt
    ineligible. Rollback also rebuilds terminal scrollback from the retained
    transcript cells so repeated cancellations and terminal resizes do not
    duplicate history.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Start the TUI with `cargo run -p codex-cli --bin codex`.
    2. In a fresh thread, submit the first prompt and press `Esc` before
    Codex emits substantive output. Confirm that the prompt returns to the
    composer for editing and its submitted transcript row is removed.
    3. Repeat with `Ctrl+C`, then repeat after at least one completed turn.
    Confirm the same behavior.
    4. Submit a prompt, wait for assistant output or tool activity, then
    cancel. Confirm that the transcript remains intact and the prompt is not
    restored into the composer.
    5. Cancel several output-free prompts and resize the terminal between
    attempts. Confirm that the startup banner, tip, and transcript history
    do not duplicate in scrollback.
    
    Targeted tests:
    - `just test -p codex-tui cancelled_turn_edit_restores_prompt`
    - `just test -p codex-tui
    output_free_interrupted_turn_requests_prompt_restore`
    - `just test -p codex-tui

    The full `just test -p codex-tui` run completed with `2746` passing
    tests and two unrelated existing guardian feature-flag failures. `just
    argument-comment-lint` remains blocked locally by the existing Bazel
    LLVM `compiler-rt` sanitizer-header glob failure; the touched Rust diff
    was manually audited for positional literal comments.
  • Add cloud-managed config layer support (#24620)
    ## Summary
    
    PR 3 of 5 in the cloud-managed config client stack.
    
    Adds enterprise-managed cloud config as a first-class config layer
    source. The layer metadata is preserved through config loading,
    diagnostics, debug output, hook attribution, and app-server protocol
    surfaces.
    
    ## Details
    
    - Enterprise-managed config becomes a normal config layer source with
    backend-supplied `id` and display `name` attached for provenance.
    - These layers are designed to behave like non-file managed config: they
    can surface syntax/type diagnostics by layer name even though there is
    no physical config file.
    - Relative path settings are resolved from a stored config base so
    cloud-delivered config remains consistent with existing MDM-delivered
    config semantics.
    - Hook attribution distinguishes config-delivered hooks from
    requirements-delivered hooks via `HookSource::CloudManagedConfig`.
    - This remains pull-based and snapshot-oriented; the PR adds layer
    identity/diagnostics, not dynamic reload behavior.
    
    ## Validation
    
    Validated through the targeted stack checks after rebasing onto current
    `main`:
    
    - Rust crate tests for
    config/hooks/cloud-config/backend-client/app-server-protocol
    - Filtered `codex-core` and `codex-app-server` `cloud_config_bundle`

    ## Summary
    - add Vim normal-mode `s` support to substitute the character under the
    cursor and enter insert mode

    action

  • Add /archive slash command (#25027)
    ## Why
    
    TUI users can archive saved sessions from other surfaces, but there is
    no in-session command for archiving the active session. Since archiving
    the active session also exits the TUI, the command should ask for
    explicit confirmation instead of firing immediately.
    
    I'm also working on [a companion
    PR](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/25021) that adds `codex
    archive` and `codex unarchive` top-level CLI commands.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Adds a new `/archive` slash command described as `archive this session
    and exit`.
    - Shows a confirmation dialog with `No, don't archive` selected first
    and `Yes, archive and exit` as the explicit action.
    - On confirmation, calls the existing `thread/archive` app-server RPC
    for the active main session and exits after success.
    - Keeps `/archive` disabled while a task is running and unavailable in
    side conversations.
    
    ## Verification
    
    Added focused TUI coverage for the `/archive` confirmation flow,
    disabled-while-task-running behavior, and the `/ar` slash-command popup
    snapshot.
  • Seed prompt history from resumed messages (#24298)
    ## Why
    
    When the TUI resumes a thread, transcript replay renders prior user
    messages but did not seed the composer history. That leaves the resumed
    session with empty in-memory prompt history, so pressing Up can fall
    through to persisted global history and surface a prompt from another
    thread.
    
    The expected behavior is that prompts from the resumed thread are
    recalled first, with global history only as a fallback.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Record replayed user messages into the composer history during resume
    replay.
    - Preserve the existing persisted history format and avoid any startup
    history scan.
    - Add focused TUI coverage showing replayed prompts are recalled before
    persisted global history.
    
    ## Validation
    
    - Added `replayed_user_messages_seed_composer_history` in
    `codex-rs/tui/src/chatwidget/tests/history_replay.rs`.
    - `just test -p codex-tui replayed_user_messages_seed_composer_history`
    passed.
  • TUI: Unified mentions tweaks + polish mentions rendering (#23363)
    This change keeps unified @mentions behind the mentions_v2 gate, moves
    the flag to under-development, and polishes mention rendering/history
    behavior.
    
    It also adds a few small improvements to the mentions feature around
    mention rendering and history round-tripping for plugin/tool mentions in
    message edit scenarios. Plugin selections now insert `@` mentions with
    better casing, and saved history preserves the visible sigil so recalled
    messages look the same as what the user typed.
    
    - Preserves `@` sigils when encoding/decoding mention history for
    tool/plugin paths.
    - Improves plugin mention insertion so display names/casing are
    reflected more cleanly in the composer.
    - Update composer to render user-entered plugin mentions in the same
    color as the mentions menu. ALso applies to recalled/edited messages.
    - Left/right arrows no longer switch unified-mention search modes after
    an @mention has already been accepted (Ex: arrowing left through a
    composed message that contains @mentions).
    - Keeps bound mentions stable around punctuation, so accepted `@`
    mentions do not reopen the popup and punctuated `$` mentions still
    persist to cross-session history.
    
    **Steps to test**
    - Ensure mentions_v2 is enabled through configuration or `--enable
    mentions_v2`
    - Type `@` in the TUI composer and verify filesystem/plugin/skill
    results are displayed in the unified mentions menu.
    - Select a plugin mention from the `@` popup and confirm the inserted
    text is an `@...` mention with casing, then recall/edit the message and
    confirm it still renders as `@...`.
    - Mention a skill and verify that skills still insert as `$skill`
    mentions rather than `@` mentions.
    - Verify punctuated mentions such as `@plugin.` and `($skill)` keep
    their bound mention behavior across editing and history recall.
  • feat(tui): add OSC 8 web links to rich content (#24472)
    ## Why
    
    Wrapped URLs in rich TUI output, especially URLs rendered inside
    Markdown tables, are split across terminal rows. In terminals that
    support OSC 8 hyperlinks, treating each visible fragment as part of the
    complete destination enables reliable open-link and copy-link actions
    even after table layout wraps the URL.
    
    This addresses the semantic-link portion of #12200 and the behavior
    described in
    https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/12200#issuecomment-4535452980. It
    does not change ordinary drag-selection across bordered table rows.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added shared TUI OSC 8 support that validates `http://` and `https://`
    destinations, sanitizes terminal payloads, and applies metadata
    separately from visible line width/layout.
    - Added semantic web-link annotations to assistant and proposed-plan
    Markdown, including explicit web links and bare web URLs in prose and
    table cells while excluding code and non-web Markdown destinations.
    - Preserved complete URL targets through table wrapping, narrow pipe
    fallback, streaming, transcript overlay rendering, history insertion,
    and resize replay.
    - Routed intentional Codex-owned links in notices,
    status/setup/app-link, feedback, onboarding, MCP/plugin help, memories,
    and update surfaces through the shared hyperlink handling.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Run Codex in a terminal with OSC 8 link support, such as Ghostty, and
    request an assistant response containing a Markdown table whose last
    column contains a long `https://` URL.
    2. Make the terminal narrow enough for the URL to wrap across multiple
    bordered table rows.
    3. Use the terminal's open-link or copy-link action on more than one
    wrapped URL fragment and confirm each fragment resolves to the complete
    original URL.
    4. Resize the terminal after the table is rendered and repeat the link
    action to confirm the destination survives scrollback replay.
    5. Open the transcript overlay while rich output is present and confirm
    web links remain interactive there.
    6. As a regression check, render inline/fenced code containing URL text
    and a Markdown link such as
    `[https://example.com](mailto:support@example.com)`; confirm these do
    not acquire a web OSC 8 destination.
    
    Targeted automated coverage exercised Markdown links and exclusions,
    wrapped and pipe-fallback tables, streaming/transcript overlay
    propagation, status-link truncation, and rendered word-wrapping cell
    alignment. `just test -p codex-tui` was also run; it passed the
    hyperlink coverage and reproduced two unrelated existing guardian
    feature-flag test failures.
  • feat(tui): make turn interruption keybind configurable (#24766)
    ## Why
    
    Interrupting an active turn is currently fixed to `Esc`, which is easy
    to hit accidentally and cannot be customized through `/keymap`. This
    gives users a less accidental binding while preserving the existing
    default.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Adds `tui.keymap.chat.interrupt_turn` to `/keymap`, defaulting to
    `esc` and supporting remapping or unbinding.
    - Uses the configured interrupt binding for running-turn status, queued
    steer interruption, and `request_user_input`, including the visible
    hints.
    - Preserves local `Esc` behavior for popups, Vim insert mode, and
    `/agent` editing while validating conflicts with fixed/backtrack and
    request-input navigation bindings.
    - Adds behavior and snapshot coverage for remapped interruption paths.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Run Codex and open `/keymap`, then set **Interrupt Turn** to `f12`.
    2. Start a turn and confirm `Esc` no longer interrupts it while `f12`
    does; the running hint should display `f12 to interrupt`.
    3. Queue a steer while a turn is running and confirm the preview
    displays `f12`; pressing it should interrupt and submit the steer
    immediately.
    4. Trigger a `request_user_input` prompt and confirm its footer uses
    `f12`; with notes open, `Esc` should still clear notes while `f12`
    interrupts the turn.
    5. Clear the Interrupt Turn binding and confirm the key-specific
    interrupt hint is removed while `Ctrl+C` remains available.
    
    Targeted validation:
    
    - `just write-config-schema`
    - `just fix -p codex-config`
    - `just fix -p codex-tui`
    - `just fmt`
    - `just argument-comment-lint-from-source -p codex-config -p codex-tui`

  • feat(tui): add vim text object bindings (#24382)
    ## Why
    
    Vim mode currently supports some normal-mode operators and motions, but
    common text-object combinations like `ciw`, `daw`, `di(`, and
    quote/bracket variants are still missing. That makes the composer feel
    incomplete for users who expect operator + text object editing to work
    inside prompts.
    
    Closes #21383.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Add Vim pending-state support for operator/text-object sequences.
    - Add `c` as a normal-mode operator for text objects, so combinations
    like `ciw` delete the object and enter insert mode.
    - Support word, WORD, delimiter, and quote text objects:
      - `iw`, `aw`, `iW`, `aW`
      - `i(`, `a(`, `i)`, `a)`, `ib`, `ab`
      - `i[`, `a[`, `i]`, `a]`
      - `i{`, `a{`, `i}`, `a}`, `iB`, `aB`
      - `i"`, `a"`, `i'`, `a'`, `i\``, `a\``
    - Add configurable keymap entries and keymap picker coverage for the new
    Vim text-object context.
    - Regenerate the config schema and update keymap picker snapshots.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    Manual smoke test:
    
    1. Start Codex with Vim composer mode enabled.
    2. Type a draft such as:
       ```text
       alpha beta gamma
       call(foo[bar], {"x": "hello world"})
       say "one \"two\" three" now
       ```
    3. Put the cursor on `beta`, press `ciw`, and confirm `beta` is removed
    and the composer enters insert mode.
    4. Escape back to normal mode, put the cursor on `gamma`, press `daw`,
    and confirm `gamma` plus surrounding whitespace is removed.
    5. Put the cursor inside `foo[bar]`, press `di[`, and confirm only `bar`
    is removed.
    6. Put the cursor inside `call(...)`, press `da(`, and confirm the whole
    parenthesized section is removed.
    7. Put the cursor inside the quoted text, press `ci"`, and confirm the
    quote contents are removed and insert mode starts.
    8. Verify cancellation does not edit text: press `d` then `Esc`, and
    press `d` then `i` then `Esc`.
    
    Targeted tests:
    
    - `cargo test -p codex-tui --lib vim_`
    - `cargo nextest run -p codex-tui keymap_setup::tests`
    
    Additional local checks:
    
    - `just write-config-schema`
    - `just fmt`
    - `just fix -p codex-tui`
    - `git diff --check`
    - `cargo insta pending-snapshots --manifest-path tui/Cargo.toml`
    
    Local full-suite note: `just test -p codex-tui` ran to completion. The
    keymap snapshot failures were expected and accepted. Two unrelated
    guardian feature-flag tests still fail locally:

    `just argument-comment-lint` is currently blocked locally by Bazel

    `include/sanitizer/*.h` glob in the local Bazel cache. The touched Rust
    diff was manually inspected for opaque positional literals.
  • [codex] Remove stale composer narrative doc references (#24641)
    ## Context
    
    `docs/tui-chat-composer.md` was removed by #20896 as part of removing
    local-only docs/specs from the repository. I checked the #20896 file
    list and the merge commit: the composer doc was deleted, not moved or
    copied, and current `main` does not contain a replacement composer
    narrative doc.
    
    Current guidance should keep contributors and agents focused on the docs
    that still exist: the module docs in `chat_composer.rs` and
    `paste_burst.rs`.
    
    ## Summary
    
    - Removes the scoped TUI bottom-pane AGENTS.md requirement to update
    `docs/tui-chat-composer.md`.
    - Removes stale module-doc references to that deleted narrative doc from
    `chat_composer.rs` and `paste_burst.rs`.
    
    ## Validation
    
    - Checked #20896 and the merge commit with rename/copy detection to
    confirm `docs/tui-chat-composer.md` was deleted rather than moved.
    - Searched current `main` for a replacement composer narrative doc.
    - Not run; documentation-only change.
  • fix: Preserve draft text when completing argument-taking slash commands (#23950)
    This adds slash command completion behavior for argument-taking
    commands, where text after the partially typed command becomes inline
    arguments instead of being discarded. This addresses the workflow of
    drafting text first, moving to the start, and completing a slash command
    around that existing draft. Before this change, this workflow would
    remove all user-input text aside from the slash command, which can be
    frustrating if the user had just typed out a long and well thought out
    goal.
    
    - Preserves the draft tail for inline-argument slash commands like
    `/goal` and `/review` when completing with `Tab` or `Enter`.
    - Keeps popup filtering focused on the command fragment under the cursor
    rather than the full draft text.
    - Leaves slash commands that do not support inline arguments unchanged,
    so completion still replaces the existing draft tail for those commands.
    - Adds focused TUI tests under slash input covering preserved arguments,
    cursor edge cases, and the negative case for a command without inline
    args.
      
    Follow-up simplification and test relocation from #24683 folded into
    this PR.

  • fix(tui): complete vim word-end and line-end behavior (#24380)
    ## Why
    
    The TUI Vim composer currently diverges from normal Vim editing in two
    common workflows: pressing `e` repeatedly can remain stuck at an
    existing word end, and normal mode does not support `C` for changing
    through the end of the line. The existing `D` behavior also removes the
    newline when the cursor is already at the line boundary, which makes the
    new `C` action and existing deletion action surprising in multiline
    prompts.
    
    Closes #23926.
    Closes #24238.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Make normal-mode `e` advance from the current word end to the next
    word end, including for operator motions such as `de`.
    - Add configurable Vim normal-mode `change_to_line_end` behavior, bound
    to `C` by default, which deletes to the end of the current line and
    enters Insert mode.
    - Keep the newline intact when `D` or `C` is pressed at the end-of-line
    boundary.
    - Add regression coverage for repeated `e`, `de`, `C`, and the multiline
    `C`/`D` boundary behavior.
    - Regenerate the config schema and update the keymap picker snapshots
    for the new Vim action.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Run Codex with Vim composer mode enabled:
       ```bash
       cd codex-rs
       cargo run --bin codex -- -c tui.vim_mode_default=true
       ```
    2. Enter `alpha beta gamma`, press `Esc`, `0`, then press `e`
    repeatedly.
    Confirm the cursor advances through the ends of `alpha`, `beta`, and
    `gamma`.
    3. Enter `hello world`, press `Esc`, `0`, `w`, then `C`.
       Confirm `world` is deleted and the composer enters Insert mode.
    4. Enter a multiline prompt with `hello` above `world`, press `Esc`,
    `k`, `$`, and then `D`.
       Confirm the newline is preserved and the two lines do not join.
    5. At the same boundary, press `C` and type `!`.
    Confirm the composer enters Insert mode and yields `hello!` above
    `world`, preserving the newline.
    
    Targeted automated verification:
    - `just fix -p codex-tui`
    - `just argument-comment-lint-from-source -p codex-tui -p codex-config`
    - `cargo insta pending-snapshots` reports no pending snapshots.
    - `just test -p codex-tui` validates the new Vim and keymap snapshot
    coverage, but the command remains red due to two reproducible unrelated
    failures in `app::tests::update_feature_flags_disabling_guardian_*`.
    
    ## Validation Note
    
    The workspace-wide `just argument-comment-lint` form is currently
    blocked during Bazel analysis by the existing LLVM `compiler-rt` missing
    `include/sanitizer/*.h` failure; package-scoped source linting for the
    changed Rust crates passed.
  • Uprev Rust toolchain pins to 1.95.0 (#24684)
    ## Summary
    - Bump the workspace Rust toolchain from `1.93.0` to `1.95.0` across
    Cargo, Bazel, CI, release workflows, devcontainers, and the Codex
    environment config.
    - Refresh `MODULE.bazel.lock` so the Bazel Rust toolchain artifacts
    match the new version.
    - Leave purpose-specific toolchains unchanged, including the
    `argument-comment-lint` nightly and the upstream `rusty_v8` `1.91.0`
    build pin.
    - Includes fixes for new lints from `just fix` and a few codex-authored
    fixes for lints without a suggestion.
  • Attach Windows sandbox log to feedback reports (#24623)
    ## Why
    
    Windows sandbox diagnostics are currently hard to recover from
    `/feedback` even though they are often the most useful artifact when
    debugging sandbox behavior. Now that sandbox logging uses daily rolling
    files, feedback can safely include the current day's sandbox log without
    uploading the old ever-growing legacy `sandbox.log`.
    
    ## What changed

    parsing and selection inspired this code move to prevent
    `chat_composer.rs` bloat.

    This PR labels the compact rate-limit values explicitly as `left` across
    the status line, terminal title, and setup previews.

  • Add SubagentStop hook (#22873)
    # What

    finish. Thread-spawned subagents use `SubagentStop` instead of the
    normal root-agent `Stop` hook.
    
    Configured handlers match on `agent_type`. Hook input includes the
    normal stop fields plus:
    
    - `agent_id`: the child thread id.
    - `agent_type`: the resolved subagent type.
    - `agent_transcript_path`: the child subagent transcript path.
    - `transcript_path`: the parent thread transcript path.
    - `last_assistant_message`: the final assistant message from the child
    turn, when available.
    - `stop_hook_active`: `true` when the child is already continuing
    because an earlier stop-like hook blocked completion.
    
    `SubagentStop` shares the same completion-control semantics as `Stop`,
    scoped to the child turn:
    
    - No decision allows the child turn to finish.
    - `decision: "block"` with a non-empty `reason` records that reason as
    hook feedback and continues the child with that prompt.
    - `continue: false` stops the child turn. If `stopReason` is present,
    Codex surfaces it as the stop reason.

    ## Why
    
    After the terminal-probe work in #23175, fresh-session startup still
    waits for `thread/start` before the chat input can become usable. The
    chat widget already has the machinery to hold early submissions until a
    session is configured, so fresh `thread/start` does not need to stay on
    the input-ready hot path.
    
    Refs #16335.
    
    ## What
    
    This PR starts fresh app-server threads in a background task, reports
    completion through a startup app event, and attaches the primary session
    once `thread/start` returns. Resume and fork startup paths remain
    synchronous.
    
    ## Benchmark
    
    In the local pty startup benchmark, this PR's pre-optimization base
    branch, #23175, measured about 152ms median from launch to accepted chat
    input. The stacked result measured about 66ms median, for an approximate
    additional savings of 85-95ms. For broader context, the original `main`
    baseline before either startup optimization was about 250.5ms median. We
    also measured Codex 0.117.0 on the same machine at about 64.6ms median,
    so the stacked branch is back in the old-startup-time range.

    Plan mode questionnaires reuse the shared composer for free-form

    every `KeyCode::Enter` as “advance to the next question.” That made
    `Shift+Enter` insert a newline in the composer and then immediately
    advance the questionnaire anyway.
    
    Fixes #23448.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - pass the live `RuntimeKeymap` into `RequestUserInputOverlay` so its
    embedded composer honors existing `/keymap` composer/editor remaps
    - advance free-form questions only on the configured composer submit
    binding, instead of any Enter-shaped key event

    pair. This supports generalized Codex rate-limit periods.

    - Formats CLI rate-limit warning/status labels only for the supported
    returned window durations: approximate 5h, daily, weekly, monthly, and
    annual.
    - Uses generic fallback copy when a primary or secondary window has no
    duration, so missing secondary protection data does not produce stale

    - Uses generic fallback copy for unsupported window durations instead of
    adding arbitrary hourly, multi-day, multi-week, or multi-year labels.

  • Make deny canonical for filesystem permission entries (#23493)
    ## Why
    Filesystem permission profiles used `none` for deny-read entries, which
    is less direct than the action the entry actually represents. This
    change makes `deny` the canonical filesystem permission spelling while
    preserving compatibility for older configs that still send `none`.
    
    ## What changed
    - rename `FileSystemAccessMode::None` to `Deny`
    - serialize and generate schemas with `deny` as the canonical value
    - retain `none` only as a legacy input alias for temporary config
    compatibility

  • goal: pause continuation loops on usage limits and blockers (#23094)
    Addresses #22833, #22245, #23067
    
    ## Why
    `/goal` can keep synthesizing turns even when the next turn cannot make
    meaningful progress. Hard usage exhaustion can replay failing turns, and
    repeated permission or external-resource blockers can keep burning
    tokens while waiting for user or system intervention.
    
    ## What changed
    - Add resumable `blocked` and `usageLimited` goal states. As with
    `paused`, goal continuation stops with these states.
    - Move to `usageLimited` after usage-limit failures.
    - Allow the built-in `update_goal` tool to set `blocked` only under
    explicit repeated-impasse guidance. Updated goal continuation prompt to
    specify that agent should use `blocked` only when it has made at least
    three attempts to get past an impasse.
    
    Most of the files touched by this PR are because of the small app server
    protocol update.
    
    ## Validation
    
    I manually reproduced a number of situations where an agent can run into
    a true impasse and verified that it properly enters `blocked` state. I
    then resumed and verified that it once again entered `blocked` state
    several turns later if the impasse still exists.
    
    I also manually reproduced the usage-limit condition by creating a
    simulated responses API endpoint that returns 429 errors with the
    appropriate error message. Verified that the goal runtime properly moves
    the goal into `usageLimited` state and TUI UI updates appropriately.
    Verified that `/goal resume` resumes (and immediately goes back into
    `ussageLImited` state if appropriate).
    
    
    ## Follow-up PRs
    
    Small changes will be needed to the GUI clients to properly handle the
    two new states.
  • fix(tui): show shutdown feedback on exit (#23323)
    ## Why
    
    Ctrl+C can take a noticeable amount of time to finish when the TUI is
    waiting for the app-server thread shutdown path to complete. Before this
    change, the UI could look like it had not accepted the shutdown request
    because the composer and cursor remained in their normal interactive
    state during that wait.
    
    This PR makes the accepted shutdown visible immediately. It does not add
    an artificial sleep or change the shutdown timeout; it only draws one
    final feedback frame before continuing through the existing shutdown
    flow.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - On `ExitMode::ShutdownFirst`, the TUI now renders shutdown feedback
    before awaiting the existing thread shutdown future.
    - The bottom pane disables composer input, which hides the cursor
    through the existing disabled-input cursor path.
    - The composer shows `Shutting down...` as the disabled input hint and
    suppresses footer content so the shutdown acknowledgement is not
    competing with shortcut/status text.
    - The logout path uses the same feedback path before shutting down.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Start Codex from this branch.
    2. Press `Ctrl+C` to request shutdown.
    3. If shutdown takes long enough to observe, confirm the composer
    changes to `› Shutting down...`, the cursor disappears, and no footer
    hint is rendered below it.
    4. Regression check: repeat with text already typed in the composer and
    confirm the visible row still switches to `Shutting down...` while the
    draft remains preserved internally until the process exits.

    ## Local Validation Note

    stack overflow. That same test also failed when run alone locally, and
    the failure appears unrelated to this shutdown feedback path.
  • tui: split remaining composer draft and footer state (#22656)
    ## Why
    
    [#22581](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22581) started separating
    the chat composer’s responsibilities, but `ChatComposer` still owned the
    remaining editable draft state alongside footer/status presentation
    state. This follow-up makes those ownership lines explicit so future
    composer changes have a smaller blast radius and `BottomPane` does not
    need to keep exposing scattered draft getters.
    
    This is just a refactor. No functional or behavioral changes are
    intended.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Move the remaining editable composer state into
    `bottom_pane/chat_composer/draft_state.rs`.
    - Move footer and status-row presentation state into
    `bottom_pane/chat_composer/footer_state.rs`.

    Network approval prompts are rendered without a command string on the
    app-server path. After the user approves one of those prompts, the TUI
    history cell previously fell back to command-oriented copy and produced
    malformed lines such as:

    persisted network-rule history behavior unchanged.

    1. Start Codex in a flow that triggers a network approval prompt.
    2. Approve network access only for the current conversation.
    3. Confirm the transcript records the approved network target, for

    ## Why
    
    `ChatComposer` currently owns text editing alongside attachment
    bookkeeping and popup lifecycle state, while `BottomPane` still triggers
    a couple of popup resyncs after composer methods that already do that
    work internally. That blurs the ownership boundary and makes the
    composer harder to simplify safely.
    
    This PR is part 1 of a two-part cleanup. It peels off the composer state
    that can move cleanly on its own, so the follow-up can tackle the
    heavier draft/editing boundary without mixing every concern into one
    diff.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Move local and remote image bookkeeping, placeholder relabeling, and
    remote-image keyboard selection into `AttachmentState`.
    - Move active-popup and popup-dismissal/query bookkeeping into
    `PopupState`.
    - Update composer and history-search paths to use those state owners
    directly.
    - Remove redundant `BottomPane` popup synchronization after paste
    handling and `insert_str`.
    
    ## Part 2
    
    The follow-up PR will finish the cleanup around the remaining composer
    boundary: split out the draft/editing-oriented state and footer/status

    the leftover `BottomPane` pass-throughs once those ownership lines are
    explicit. The goal is for `ChatComposer` to coordinate a few focused
    collaborators instead of continuing to be the landing zone for every

    This is a small precursor to the larger permissions-migration work. Both

    stack in [#22610](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22610) /

    review if the terminology is already settled underneath them.
    
    Because `:project_roots` and `:danger-no-sandbox` have not shipped as
    stable user-facing surface area, carrying them forward as aliases would
    just add more migration logic to the later stacks. This PR removes that
    ambiguity now so the follow-on work can rely on one spelling for each
    built-in concept.

    - renamed the config-facing special filesystem key from `:project_roots`

    ## Summary
    `/collab` was intentionally removed in
    [#12012](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/12012), but the
    TUI/app-server migration accidentally brought that slash-command path
    back. This restores the earlier product decision so the TUI no longer
    advertises or dispatches `/collab`. This command was redundant because
    it did the same thing as `/plan` but in a less-intuitive way.
    
    ## What Changed
    - Remove `SlashCommand::Collab` from the TUI slash-command surface.
    - Delete the picker and app-event plumbing that only existed to service
    `/collab`.
    - Remove obsolete TUI test coverage for the deleted picker flow.
  • feat(cli): add codex doctor diagnostics (#22336)
    ## Why
    
    Users and support need a single command that captures the local Codex
    runtime, configuration, auth, terminal, network, and state shape without
    asking the user to know which diagnostic depth to choose first. `codex
    doctor` now runs the useful checks by default and makes the detailed
    human output the default because the command is usually run when someone
    already needs context.
    
    The command also targets concrete support failure modes we have seen
    while iterating on the design:
    
    - update-target mismatches like #21956, where the installed package
    manager target can differ from the running executable
    - terminal and multiplexer issues that depend on `TERM`, tmux/zellij
    state, color handling, and TTY metadata
    - provider-specific HTTP/WebSocket connectivity, including ChatGPT
    WebSocket handshakes and API-key/provider endpoint reachability
    - local state/log SQLite integrity problems and large rollout
    directories
    - feedback reports that need an attached, redacted diagnostic snapshot
    without asking the user to run a second command
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Adds `codex doctor` as a grouped CLI diagnostic report with default
    detailed output and `--summary` for the compact view.
    - Adds stable report sections for Environment, Configuration, Updates,
    Connectivity, and Background Server, plus a top Notes block that
    promotes anomalies such as available updates, large rollout directories,
    optional MCP issues, and mixed auth signals.
    - Adds runtime provenance, install consistency, bundled/system search

  • feat(tui): standardize picker navigation keys (#22347)
    ## Why
    
    Picker-style UI in the TUI has accumulated a mix of hardcoded navigation
    keys. Some lists supported page movement, some did not; some accepted
    Vim-like keys, while others only accepted arrows; and tabbed or
    horizontally adjustable pickers had no shared keymap action for
    left/right movement.
    
    This PR makes picker/list navigation consistent and configurable so
    users can rely on the same defaults across the TUI.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Adds shared list keymap actions for:
      - vertical movement: `move_up`, `move_down`
      - horizontal movement: `move_left`, `move_right`
      - paging and jumps: `page_up`, `page_down`, `jump_top`, `jump_bottom`

    - Up/down: arrows, `Ctrl+P/N`, `Ctrl+K/J`, and plain `k/j` where text

    4. Type printable search text such as `j` or `k` and confirm it updates
    the query instead of navigating.
    5. Focus a picker control that changes values horizontally, such as a
    session picker toolbar control, and verify `Ctrl+H/L` changes the
    focused value like left/right arrows.

  • feat(tui): remove Zellij TUI workarounds (#22214)
    ## Why
    
    We added Zellij-specific TUI workarounds because older Zellij behavior
    did not work with Codex's normal terminal model:
    
    - #8555 made `tui.alternate_screen = "auto"` disable alternate screen in
    Zellij so transcript history stayed available.
    - #16578 avoided scroll-region operations in Zellij by emitting raw
    newlines and using a separate composer styling path.
    
    This PR removes both workarounds because the latest Zellij release
    tested locally (`zellij 0.44.1`) works correctly with Codex's standard
    TUI behavior: normal alternate-screen handling, redraw, and history
    insertion.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Removed the `InsertHistoryMode::Zellij` path and the Zellij-only
    newline scrollback insertion behavior.
    - Removed cached `is_zellij` state from the TUI and composer.
    - Removed Zellij-specific composer styling, the helper snapshot, and the
    `TerminalInfo::is_zellij()` convenience method that only served this
    workaround.
    - Changed `tui.alternate_screen = "auto"` to use alternate screen for
    Zellij too; `--no-alt-screen` and `tui.alternate_screen = "never"` still
    preserve the inline mode escape hatch.
    - Updated the generated config schema description for
    `tui.alternate_screen`.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    Manual smoke path used with `zellij 0.44.1`:
    
    1. Build and run this branch inside a Zellij `0.44.1` session with
    default config.
    2. Start Codex normally and produce enough assistant/tool output to
    create scrollback.
    3. Confirm the transcript remains readable, the composer renders
    normally, and scrolling through terminal history works.
    4. Resize the Zellij pane while output exists and confirm the TUI
    redraws without duplicated, missing, or stale rows.
    5. Compare with `--no-alt-screen` or `-c tui.alternate_screen=never` if
    you want to verify the inline fallback still works.

  • feat(tui): add ambient terminal pets (#21206)
    ## Why
    
    The Codex App has animated pets, but the TUI had no equivalent ambient
    companion surface. This brings that experience into terminal Codex while
    keeping the main chat flow usable: the pet should feel present, but it
    cannot cover transcript text, composer input, approvals, or picker
    content.
    
    The feature also needs to be terminal-aware. Different terminals support
    different image protocols, tmux can interfere with image rendering, and
    some users will want pets disabled entirely or anchored differently
    depending on their layout.

    pet sprite without extra status text beside it.

    1. Start Codex TUI in a terminal with image support.
    2. Run `/pets`.
    3. Confirm the picker shows built-in pets plus custom pets, and the
    first item is `Disable terminal pets`.
    4. On a fresh `~/.codex/cache/tui-pets/`, move onto a built-in pet and
    confirm the first preview downloads the spritesheet from the shared
    Codex pets CDN and renders successfully.
    5. Move through the pet list and confirm subsequent built-in previews
    use the local cache.
    6. Select a pet, then send and receive messages. Confirm transcript and
    composer text wrap before the pet instead of rendering underneath the
    sprite.
    7. Change the pet anchor setting and confirm the pet can either follow
    the composer bottom or sit at the terminal bottom.
    8. Return to `/pets`, choose `Disable terminal pets`, and confirm the
    sprite disappears cleanly.

  • [codex] Generalize service tier slash commands (#21745)
    ## Why
    
    `/fast` was wired as a one-off slash command even though model metadata
    now exposes service tiers as catalog data. That meant adding another
    tier, such as a slower/cheaper tier, would require more hardcoded TUI
    plumbing instead of letting the model catalog drive the available
    commands.
    
    This change makes service-tier commands data-driven: each advertised
    `service_tiers` entry becomes a `/name` command using the catalog
    description, while the request path sends the tier `id` only when the
    selected model supports it.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Removed the hardcoded `/fast` slash-command variant and introduced
    dynamic service-tier command items in the composer and command popup.
    - Added toggle behavior for service-tier commands: invoking `/name`
    selects that tier, and invoking it again clears the selection.
    - Preserved the existing Fast-mode keybinding/status affordances by
    resolving the current model tier whose name is `fast`, while still
    sending the tier request value such as `priority`.
    - Persisted service-tier selections as raw request strings so non-fast
    tiers can round-trip through config.
    - Updated the Bedrock catalog entry to advertise fast support through
    `service_tiers` with `id: "priority"` and `name: "fast"`.

  • Show permissions and approval mode in the TUI status line (#21677)
    Fixes #21665.
    
    ## Why
    
    The TUI status line is the right place for compact, glanceable session
    state. The original request was motivated by the need to see the active
    permission posture without opening `/permissions` or `/status`,
    especially when switching between safer and more permissive modes during
    a session.
    
    This PR intentionally separates `permissions` from `approval-mode`
    instead of combining them into one status-line item. They answer related
    but different questions: `permissions` describes the active
    sandbox/profile shape, while `approval-mode` describes how command
    approvals are handled. Keeping them separate makes each item
    independently configurable and avoids long combined labels in an already
    space-constrained status line.
    
    The tradeoff is that users who want the full permission posture in the
    status line need to opt into both items. In exchange, users can show
    only the sandbox/profile label, only the approval behavior, or both, and
    named user-defined profiles remain concise. Non-standard permission
    shapes are rendered as `Custom permissions` rather than trying to
    squeeze detailed profile contents into the status line; `/status`
    remains the fuller explanatory surface.

    - Added a configurable `permissions` status-line item.
    - Added a separate `approval-mode` status-line item, with `approval` as
    an alias.
    - Render standard permission states compactly as `Read Only`,

    ## Why
    
    Compaction rewrites the conversation context that future model turns
    receive, but hooks currently have no deterministic lifecycle point
    around that rewrite. This adds compact lifecycle hooks so users can
    audit manual and automatic compaction, surface hook messages in the UI,
    and run post-compaction follow-up without overloading tool or prompt
    hooks.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added `PreCompact` and `PostCompact` hook events across hook config,
    discovery, dispatch, generated schemas, app-server notifications,
    analytics, and TUI hook rendering.
    - Added trigger matching for compact hooks with the documented `manual`
    and `auto` matcher values.
    - Wired `PreCompact` before both local and remote compaction, and
    `PostCompact` after successful local or remote compaction.
    - Kept compact hook command input to lifecycle metadata: session id,
    Codex turn id, transcript path, cwd, hook event name, model, and
    trigger.
    - Made compact stdout handling consistent with other hooks: plain stdout
    is ignored as debug output, while malformed JSON-looking stdout is
    reported as failed hook output.
    - Added integration coverage for compact hook dispatch, trigger
    matching, post-compact execution, and the audited behavior that
    `decision:"block"` does not block compaction.
    
    ## Out of Scope
    
    - Hook-specific compaction blocking is not implemented;
    `decision:"block"` and exit-code-2 blocking semantics are intentionally
    unsupported for `PreCompact`.
    - Custom compaction instructions are not exposed to compact hooks in
    this PR.
    - Compact summaries, summary character counts, and summary previews are
    not exposed to compact hooks in this PR.

  • Route opted-in MCP elicitations through Guardian (#19431)
    # Motivation
    
    Browser Use origin-access prompts are MCP elicitations, not direct
    tool-call approval prompts, so they were bypassing the Guardian approval
    path. We need a generic opt-in that lets eligible MCP elicitations use
    Guardian when the current turn already routes approvals there.
    
    # Description
    
    Add a generic elicitation reviewer hook in codex-mcp and wire codex-core
    to pass a Guardian reviewer callback when creating the MCP connection
    manager. The reviewer validates explicit mcp_tool_call opt-in metadata,
    builds a Guardian MCP tool-call review request from
    server/tool/connector metadata and tool params, and maps Guardian
    approval, denial, timeout, and cancellation decisions back to MCP
    elicitation responses.
    
    The new option to trigger this in the `_meta` object is:

  • fix(tui): persist ctrl-c draft via app event (#21397)
    ## Why
    
    The main branch started failing after #21351 merged because the merge
    commit kept calling `AppCommand::add_to_history` from
    `BottomPane::clear_composer_for_ctrl_c`, but main had already removed
    that helper as part of the history persistence refactor. The PR head
    passed because it was based on an older main commit where the helper
    still existed.
    
    This restores the Ctrl+C draft-stashing behavior using the current
    app-event path instead of the removed command helper.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Store the active `ThreadId` in `BottomPane` when history metadata is
    provided.
    - Emit `AppEvent::AppendMessageHistoryEntry` for Ctrl+C-cleared drafts.
    - Update the slash-clear regression test to assert the current history
    event shape.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    Targeted tests:
    - `cargo test -p codex-tui
    slash_clear_after_ctrl_c_keeps_stashed_draft_recallable`
    
    Broader local checks:
    - `just fix -p codex-tui`
    - `just argument-comment-lint -p codex-tui`

    and the only local failures were
    `status::tests::status_permissions_full_disk_managed_*`, blocked by this
    machine config rejecting `DangerFullAccess` via
    `/etc/codex/requirements.toml`.
  • fix(tui): keep Ctrl-C stashed drafts after /clear (#21351)
    ## Why
    
    When a user stashes a draft with Ctrl+C, then runs `/clear`, the fresh
    chat session loses the in-memory composer history that held the stashed
    draft. Pressing Up after `/clear` can then recall an older submitted
    prompt instead of the draft the user explicitly saved for later.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Record Ctrl+C-cleared composer text through the existing message
    history path, so it survives the fresh session created by `/clear`.
    - Keep `/clear` itself out of local slash-command recall so it does not
    sit ahead of the stashed draft.
    - Add regression coverage for the full flow: submit a prompt, stash a
    later draft with Ctrl+C, run `/clear`, then recall the stashed draft
    before the older prompt.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Start Codex with `just c`.
    2. Submit a short prompt such as `ok` and wait for the turn to complete.
    3. Type a new draft, press Ctrl+C, then run `/clear`.
    4. Press Up and confirm the stashed draft is restored.
    5. Press Up again and confirm the older submitted prompt is still
    reachable after the stashed draft.
    
    Targeted tests:
    
    - `cargo test -p codex-tui
    slash_clear_after_ctrl_c_keeps_stashed_draft_recallable`
    
    Manual verification:
    
    - Reproduced the issue in tmux with `RUST_LOG=trace just c -c
    log_dir=...`: before the fix, Up after `/clear` recalled the older
    submitted prompt.
    - Re-tested the same tmux flow after the fix: Up after `/clear` restored
    the Ctrl+C-stashed draft.
  • Move message history out of core (#21278)
    ## Why
    
    Message history was implemented inside `codex-core` and surfaced through
    core protocol ops and `SessionConfiguredEvent` fields even though the
    current consumer is TUI-local prompt recall. That made core own UI
    history persistence and exposed `history_log_id` / `history_entry_count`
    through surfaces that app-server and other clients do not need.
    
    This change moves message history persistence out of core and keeps the
    recall plumbing local to the TUI.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Added a new `codex-message-history` crate for appending, looking up,
    trimming, and reading metadata from `history.jsonl`.
    - Removed core protocol history ops/events: `AddToHistory`,
    `GetHistoryEntryRequest`, and `GetHistoryEntryResponse`.
    - Removed `history_log_id` and `history_entry_count` from
    `SessionConfiguredEvent` and updated exec/MCP/test fixtures accordingly.
    - Updated the TUI to dispatch local app events for message-history
    append/lookup and keep its persistent-history metadata in TUI session
    state.
    
    ## Validation
