  • Reduce TUI legacy core dependencies (#26711)
    ## Why
    
    The TUI still reached through `app-server-client::legacy_core` for
    thread-name normalization and project-instruction filename details. In
    particular, checking the TUI's local filesystem for `/init` is incorrect
    for remote app-server sessions, where the server owns the working
    directory and instruction discovery.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - use the instruction source paths supplied by the app server to decide
    whether `/init` should avoid overwriting project instructions
    - keep the small thread-name normalization helper local to the TUI
    - remove the now-unused instruction filename constants, utility module,
    and other unused `legacy_core` re-exports
    - make status helper tests independent of concrete instruction filenames
    
    ## Verification
    
    - `just test -p codex-app-server-client`
    - `just test -p codex-tui
    slash_init_skips_when_project_instructions_are_loaded`
    - `just test -p codex-tui` ran 2,799 tests; 2,797 passed and two
    unrelated guardian feature-flag tests failed reproducibly in untouched
    code
    
    ### Manual test
    
    Started an app server over WebSocket with a remote workspace containing
    `AGENTS.md`, then connected the TUI using `--remote`. After confirming
    `thread/start` returned the file in `instructionSources`, deleted
    `AGENTS.md` and ran `/init` in the existing session.
    
    The TUI still reported that project instructions already existed and
    skipped `/init`. The trace contained no `turn/start` request, confirming
    the decision came from app-server session state rather than a new
    client-local filesystem check.
  • [codex] Support model-defined reasoning efforts (#26444)
    ## Summary
    - accept non-empty model-defined reasoning effort values while
    preserving built-in effort behavior
    - propagate the non-Copy effort type through core, app-server, TUI,
    telemetry, and persistence call sites
    - preserve string wire encoding and expose an open-string schema for
    clients
    - update model selection and shortcut behavior for model-advertised
    effort values
    
    ## Root cause
    `ReasoningEffort` gained a string-backed custom variant, so it could no
    longer implement `Copy` or rely on derived closed-enum serialization.
    Existing consumers still moved effort values from shared references and
    assumed a fixed built-in value set.
    
    ## Validation
    - `just fmt`
    - Local tests and compilation were not run per request; relying on CI.
  • feat: show enterprise monthly credit limits in status (#24812)
    ## Summary
    
    Enterprise users can have an effective monthly credit limit, but Codex
    `/status` currently drops that metadata from the account-usage response.
    
    This change adds the optional `spend_control.individual_limit`
    projection to the existing rate-limit snapshot flow. The backend client
    reads the monthly limit, app-server exposes it as `individualLimit`, and
    the TUI renders a `Monthly credit limit` row through the existing
    progress-bar renderer.
    
    When the backend does not return an effective monthly limit, existing
    rate-limit behavior is unchanged.
    
    ## Existing backend state
    
    The account-usage backend already returns the effective monthly limit
    and current usage together:

    Before this change, Codex projected rolling `primary` and `secondary`
    windows plus `credits`. It ignored `spend_control.individual_limit`, so
    app-server clients and `/status` could not render the monthly cap.
    
    The updated flow is:

    ## App-server contract
    
    `account/rateLimits/read` and sparse `account/rateLimits/updated`
    notifications now include an additive nullable
    `rateLimits.individualLimit` field:

    In an `account/rateLimits/read` response, `null` means no monthly limit
    is available. `account/rateLimits/updated` remains a sparse rolling
    notification: clients merge available values into their most recent
    `account/rateLimits/read` snapshot or refetch. Nullable account metadata
    in a rolling notification does not clear a previously observed value.
    
    ## Design decisions
    
    - Extend the existing rate-limit snapshot instead of introducing a
    separate request or wire-level update protocol.
    - Keep the Codex projection narrow: `/status` needs the effective limit,
    current usage, remaining percentage, and reset timestamp.
    - Render the monthly row through the existing progress-bar renderer,
    with one optional detail line for `8,000 of 25,000 credits used`.
    - Keep the backend response optional so existing accounts and older
    usage states preserve their current behavior.
    - Preserve cached monthly metadata when sparse rolling notifications
    omit it. Live account-usage reads remain authoritative and can clear a
    removed limit.

    Tests: generated app-server schema verification, protocol tests,
    backend-client tests, app-server integration coverage, TUI snapshot
    coverage, formatting, and workspace lint cleanup.
  • Align TUI permissions labels with app (#25017)
    ## Summary
    
    The desktop app now presents the on-request permissions mode as `Ask for
    approval` and the manual-review-backed mode as `Approve for me`. The TUI
    still exposed older/internal labels like `Default` and `Auto-review`,
    which made the same underlying settings look different across clients.
    
    This updates the TUI UX copy to match the app without changing the
    underlying default behavior. Fresh threads continue to use the existing
    on-request approval mode, now displayed as `Ask for approval`.
    
    The label changes cover `/permissions`, explicit profile permissions
    menus, status surfaces, config persistence history/error text, and the
    corresponding TUI snapshots.

  • feat(tui): add OSC 8 web links to rich content (#24472)
    ## Why
    
    Wrapped URLs in rich TUI output, especially URLs rendered inside
    Markdown tables, are split across terminal rows. In terminals that
    support OSC 8 hyperlinks, treating each visible fragment as part of the
    complete destination enables reliable open-link and copy-link actions
    even after table layout wraps the URL.
    
    This addresses the semantic-link portion of #12200 and the behavior
    described in
    https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/12200#issuecomment-4535452980. It
    does not change ordinary drag-selection across bordered table rows.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added shared TUI OSC 8 support that validates `http://` and `https://`
    destinations, sanitizes terminal payloads, and applies metadata
    separately from visible line width/layout.
    - Added semantic web-link annotations to assistant and proposed-plan
    Markdown, including explicit web links and bare web URLs in prose and
    table cells while excluding code and non-web Markdown destinations.
    - Preserved complete URL targets through table wrapping, narrow pipe
    fallback, streaming, transcript overlay rendering, history insertion,
    and resize replay.
    - Routed intentional Codex-owned links in notices,
    status/setup/app-link, feedback, onboarding, MCP/plugin help, memories,
    and update surfaces through the shared hyperlink handling.
    
    ## How to Test
    
    1. Run Codex in a terminal with OSC 8 link support, such as Ghostty, and
    request an assistant response containing a Markdown table whose last
    column contains a long `https://` URL.
    2. Make the terminal narrow enough for the URL to wrap across multiple
    bordered table rows.
    3. Use the terminal's open-link or copy-link action on more than one
    wrapped URL fragment and confirm each fragment resolves to the complete
    original URL.
    4. Resize the terminal after the table is rendered and repeat the link
    action to confirm the destination survives scrollback replay.
    5. Open the transcript overlay while rich output is present and confirm
    web links remain interactive there.
    6. As a regression check, render inline/fenced code containing URL text
    and a Markdown link such as
    `[https://example.com](mailto:support@example.com)`; confirm these do
    not acquire a web OSC 8 destination.
    
    Targeted automated coverage exercised Markdown links and exclusions,
    wrapped and pipe-fallback tables, streaming/transcript overlay
    propagation, status-link truncation, and rendered word-wrapping cell
    alignment. `just test -p codex-tui` was also run; it passed the
    hyperlink coverage and reproduced two unrelated existing guardian
    feature-flag test failures.
  • Show remote connection details in /status (#24420)
    ## Summary
    
    Fixes #24411.
    
    `/status` currently has no way to show when the TUI is talking to Codex
    through a remote transport. That makes embedded local sessions, local
    daemon sessions, and true remote sessions look the same, and it hides
    the remote server version when debugging connection-specific behavior.
    
    This PR adds a single `Remote` row for non-embedded connections only.
    The row shows the sanitized connection address and a dimmed version
    parenthetical, preserving the existing status output for embedded local
    sessions.

  • Harden CLI rate limit window labels (#22929)
    ## Context
    
    The CLI rate-limit surfaces previously described usage windows as fixed
    5-hour and weekly limits. We want the CLI to display whatever supported
    rate-limit period the server returns instead of assuming a 5-hour/1-week
    pair. This supports generalized Codex rate-limit periods.
    
    ## Summary
    
    - Formats CLI rate-limit warning/status labels only for the supported
    returned window durations: approximate 5h, daily, weekly, monthly, and
    annual.
    - Uses generic fallback copy when a primary or secondary window has no
    duration, so missing secondary protection data does not produce stale
    weekly copy.
    - Uses generic fallback copy for unsupported window durations instead of
    adding arbitrary hourly, multi-day, multi-week, or multi-year labels.
    - Updates status line and terminal title setup descriptions/previews to
    talk about primary/secondary usage limits rather than fixed 5h/weekly
    limits.
    - Adds rendered insta snapshot coverage for the updated rate-limit
    status surfaces and `/status` fallback labels.
    
    ## Tests
    Tested locally:
    - one primary window
    - one secondary window
    - primary and secondary window
  • Hide ChatGPT usage link for non-OpenAI status (#23127)
    Addresses #22778
    
    ## Summary
    
    Provider deployments such as Bedrock manage rate limits and billing
    outside ChatGPT, so the `/status` link to the ChatGPT usage page is
    irrelevant and confusing for those users. Custom providers that are
    explicitly configured to use OpenAI/ChatGPT auth still point at
    OpenAI-backed usage, so they should keep the link.
    
    ## Changes
    
    - Render the ChatGPT usage note only when the configured provider uses
    OpenAI auth.
    - Keep the note hidden when `/status` displays a provider such as
    Bedrock that manages limits elsewhere.
    - Add regression coverage for both Bedrock and a custom OpenAI-auth
    proxy provider.
    
    ## Manual Repro
    
    1. Configure Codex with a non-OpenAI-auth provider, for example
    `model_provider = "amazon-bedrock"`.
    2. Start the TUI and run `/status`.
    3. Confirm the status card shows the custom provider, for example `Model
    provider: Amazon Bedrock`, and does not show
    `https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage`.
    4. Configure a custom provider that proxies to OpenAI and has
    OpenAI/ChatGPT auth enabled.
    5. Run `/status` again and confirm the ChatGPT usage link appears for
    that OpenAI-auth provider.
  • core: set permission profiles from snapshots (#22920)
    ## Why
    
    #22891 moved the TUI turn-command path to pass `ActivePermissionProfile`
    instead of the full `PermissionProfile`, but the remaining
    config/session bridge still accepted the concrete `PermissionProfile`
    and active profile id as separate arguments. That shape made it too easy
    for future callers to update the concrete profile and active profile id
    out of sync.
    
    This PR makes the trusted session snapshot path pass one coherent value
    into `Permissions`, while keeping `requirements.toml` enforcement owned
    by the existing constrained permission state.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added `PermissionProfileSnapshot` as the public snapshot value for
    trusted session/config synchronization.
    - Changed `Permissions::set_permission_profile_from_session_snapshot()`
    and `replace_permission_profile_from_session_snapshot()` to take a
    `PermissionProfileSnapshot`.
    - Updated the replacement path to derive its constrained
    `PermissionProfile` from the snapshot, so callers cannot pass a separate
    profile that disagrees with the snapshot.
    - Removed the internal tuple-style
    `PermissionProfileState::set_active_permission_profile()` mutation path.
    - Updated core session projection and TUI call sites to construct
    explicit legacy or active snapshots.
    - Documented the snapshot constructors so legacy use and id/profile
    mismatch hazards are called out at the API boundary.
    - Added a focused config test that verifies snapshot updates still
    respect existing permission constraints.
    
    ## How To Review
    
    1. Start with `codex-rs/core/src/config/resolved_permission_profile.rs`;
    `PermissionProfileSnapshot` is the public wrapper, while
    `ResolvedPermissionProfile` stays internal.
    2. Check `codex-rs/core/src/config/mod.rs` to confirm both
    session-snapshot setters validate through `PermissionProfileState` and
    no longer accept loose profile/id pairs.
    3. Skim `codex-rs/core/src/session/session.rs` for the session
    projection path; it now builds the snapshot before installing it.
    4. Skim the TUI changes as call-site migration from loose argument pairs
    to explicit snapshot construction.

  • app-server-protocol: remove PermissionProfile from API (#22924)
    ## Why
    
    The app server API should expose permission profile identity, not the
    lower-level runtime permission model. `PermissionProfile` is the
    compiled sandbox/network representation that the server uses internally;
    exposing it through app-server-protocol forces clients to understand
    details that should remain implementation-level.
    
    The API boundary should prefer `ActivePermissionProfile`: a stable
    profile id, plus future parent-profile metadata, that clients can pass
    back when they want to select the same active permissions. This also
    avoids schema generation collisions between the app-server v2 API type
    space and the core protocol model.
    
    Incidentally, while PR makes a number of changes to `command/exec`, note
    that we are hoping to deprecate this API in favor of `process/spawn`, so
    we don't need to be too finicky about these changes.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Removed `PermissionProfile` from the app-server-protocol API surface,
    including generated schema and TypeScript exports.
    - Changed `CommandExecParams.permissionProfile` to
    `ActivePermissionProfile`.
    - Resolve command exec profile ids through `ConfigManager` for the
    command cwd, matching turn override selection semantics.
    - Updated downstream TUI tests/helpers to use core permission types
    directly instead of app-server-protocol `PermissionProfile` shims.
  • tui/exec: show effective workspace roots in summaries (#22612)
    ## Why
    
    This PR builds on [#22611](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22611).
    
    After `runtimeWorkspaceRoots` moved onto thread state, the user-facing
    summaries were still inconsistent about which roots they showed. In
    particular, `/status` and the exec startup summary could under-report
    extra workspace roots from `--add-dir` or from profile-defined
    `workspace_roots`, which made the new model look incorrect even when the
    permissions themselves were right.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - switched the TUI status surfaces to summarize against
    `Config::effective_workspace_roots()`
    - updated the exec human-output summary to render from the effective
    permission profile instead of the raw constrained profile
    - added focused regressions for both the TUI and exec code paths so
    extra workspace roots stay visible in user-facing summaries
    
    ## Verification
    
    Targeted coverage for this follow-up lives in:
    - `codex-rs/tui/src/status/tests.rs`
    - `codex-rs/exec/src/event_processor_with_human_output_tests.rs`
    
    The added regressions verify that:
    - status output includes profile-defined workspace roots in the
    effective permissions summary
    - exec startup output includes runtime workspace roots instead of
    collapsing back to `cwd` only
  • permissions: resolve profile identity with constraints (#22683)
    ## Why
    
    This PR is the invariant-cleanup layer that follows the workspace-roots
    base merged in [#22610](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22610).
    
    #22610 adds `[permissions.<id>.workspace_roots]` and keeps runtime
    workspace roots separate from the raw permission profile, but its
    in-memory representation is intentionally transitional: `Permissions`
    still carries the selected profile identity next to a constrained
    `PermissionProfile`. That makes APIs such as
    `set_constrained_permission_profile_with_active_profile()` fragile
    because the id and value only mean the right thing when every caller
    keeps them in sync.
    
    This PR introduces a single resolved profile state so profile identity,
    `extends`, the profile value, and profile-declared workspace roots
    travel together. The next PR,
    [#22611](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22611), builds on this by
    changing the app-server turn API to select permission profiles by id
    plus runtime workspace roots.
    
    ## Stack Context
    
    - #22610, now merged: adds profile-declared `workspace_roots`, runtime
    workspace roots, and `:workspace_roots` materialization.
    - This PR: replaces the parallel active-profile/profile-value fields
    with `PermissionProfileState`.
    - #22611: switches app-server turn updates toward profile ids plus
    runtime workspace roots.
    - #22612: updates TUI/exec summaries to show the effective workspace
    roots.
    
    Keeping this separate from #22611 is deliberate: reviewers can validate
    the internal state invariant before reviewing the app-server protocol
    migration.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added `ResolvedPermissionProfile::{Legacy, BuiltIn, Named}` and
    `PermissionProfileState`.
    - Typed built-in profile ids with `BuiltInPermissionProfileId`.
    - Moved selected profile identity and profile-declared workspace roots
    into the resolved state.
    - Replaced `Permissions` parallel profile fields with one
    `permission_profile_state`.
    - Removed `set_constrained_permission_profile_with_active_profile()`
    from session sync paths.
    - Kept trusted session replay/`SessionConfigured` compatibility through
    explicit session snapshot helpers.
    - Updated session configuration, MCP initialization, app-server, exec,
    TUI, and guardian call sites to consume `&PermissionProfile` directly.
    
    ## Review Guide
    
    Start with `codex-rs/core/src/config/resolved_permission_profile.rs`; it
    is the new invariant boundary. Then review
    `codex-rs/core/src/config/mod.rs` to see how config loading records
    active profile identity and profile workspace roots. The remaining
    call-site changes are mostly mechanical fallout from
    `Permissions::permission_profile()` returning `&PermissionProfile`
    instead of `&Constrained<PermissionProfile>`.
    
    ## Verification
    
    The existing config/session coverage now constructs and asserts through
    `PermissionProfileState`. The workspace-root config test also asserts
    that profile-declared roots are preserved in the resolved state, which
    is the behavior #22611 relies on when runtime roots become mutable
    through the app-server API.

  • permissions: support workspace roots in profiles (#22610)
    ## Why
    
    This is the configuration/model half of the alternative permissions
    migration we discussed as a comparison point for
    [#22401](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22401) and
    [#22402](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22402).
    
    The old `workspace-write` model mixes three concerns that we want to
    keep separate:
    - reusable profile rules that should stay immutable once selected
    - user/runtime workspace roots from `cwd`, `--add-dir`, and legacy
    workspace-write config
    - internal Codex writable roots such as memories, which should not be
    shown as user workspace roots
    
    This PR gives permission profiles first-class `workspace_roots` so users
    can opt multiple repositories into the same `:workspace_roots` rules
    without using broad absolute-path write grants. It also starts
    separating the raw selected profile from the effective runtime profile
    by making `Permissions` expose explicit accessors instead of public
    mutable fields.
    
    A representative `config.toml` looks like this:

    If Codex starts in `~/code/codex` with that profile selected, the
    effective workspace-root set becomes:
    - `~/code/codex` from the runtime `cwd`
    - `~/code/openai` from the profile
    - `~/code/developers-website` from the profile
    
    The `:workspace_roots` rules are materialized across each root, so
    `.git`, `.codex`, and `.vscode` stay scoped the same way everywhere.
    Runtime additions such as `--add-dir` can still layer on later stack
    entries without mutating the selected profile.
    
    ## Stack Shape
    
    This PR intentionally stops before the profile-identity cleanup in
    [#22683](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22683) so the base review
    stays focused on config loading, workspace-root materialization, and
    compatibility with legacy `workspace-write`.
    
    The representation in this PR is therefore transitional: `Permissions`
    carries enough state to distinguish the raw constrained profile from the
    effective runtime profile, and there are still call sites that must keep
    the active profile identity and constrained profile value in sync. The
    follow-up PR replaces that with a single resolved profile state
    (`ResolvedPermissionProfile` / `PermissionProfileState`) that keeps the
    profile id, immutable `PermissionProfile`, and profile-declared
    workspace roots together. That follow-up removes APIs such as
    `set_constrained_permission_profile_with_active_profile()` where
    separate arguments could drift out of sync.
    
    Downstream PRs then build on this base to switch app-server turn updates
    to profile ids plus runtime workspace roots and to finish the
    user-visible summary behavior. Reviewers should judge this PR as the
    workspace-roots foundation, not as the final in-memory shape of selected
    permission profiles.
    
    ## Review Guide
    
    Suggested review order:
    
    1. Start with `codex-rs/core/src/config/mod.rs`.
    This is the main shape change in the base slice. `Permissions` now
    stores a private raw `Constrained<PermissionProfile>` plus runtime
    `workspace_roots`. Callers use `permission_profile()` when they need the
    raw constrained value and `effective_permission_profile()` when they
    need a materialized runtime profile. As noted above,
    [#22683](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/22683) replaces this
    transitional shape with a resolved profile state that keeps identity and
    profile data together.
    
    2. Review `codex-rs/config/src/permissions_toml.rs` and
    `codex-rs/core/src/config/permissions.rs`.
    These add `[permissions.<id>.workspace_roots]`, resolve enabled entries
    relative to the policy cwd, and keep `:workspace_roots` deny-read glob
    patterns symbolic until the actual roots are known.
    
    3. Review `codex-rs/protocol/src/permissions.rs` and
    `codex-rs/protocol/src/models.rs`.
    These add the policy/profile materialization helpers that expand exact
    `:workspace_roots` entries and scoped deny-read globs over every
    workspace root. This is also where `ActivePermissionProfileModification`
    is removed from the core model.
    
    4. Review the legacy bridge in
    `Config::load_from_base_config_with_overrides` and
    `Config::set_legacy_sandbox_policy`.
    This is where legacy `workspace-write` roots become runtime workspace
    roots, while Codex internal writable roots stay internal and do not
    appear as user-facing workspace roots.
    
    5. Then skim downstream call sites.
    The interesting pattern is raw-vs-effective access: state/proxy/bwrap
    paths keep the raw constrained profile, while execution, summaries, and
    user-visible status use the effective profile and workspace-root list.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - added `[permissions.<id>.workspace_roots]` to the config model and
    schema

    ## Why
    
    `--profile-v2 <name>` gives launchers and runtime entry points a named
    profile config without making each profile duplicate the base user
    config. The base `$CODEX_HOME/config.toml` still loads first, then
    `$CODEX_HOME/<name>.config.toml` layers above it and becomes the active
    writable user config for that session.
    
    That keeps shared defaults, plugin/MCP setup, and managed/user
    constraints in one place while letting a named profile override only the
    pieces that need to differ.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Added the shared `--profile-v2 <name>` runtime option with validated
    plain names, now represented by `ProfileV2Name`.
    - Extended config layer state so the base user config and selected
    profile config are both `User` layers; APIs expose the active user layer
    and merged effective user config.
    - Threaded profile selection through runtime entry points: `codex`,
    `codex exec`, `codex review`, `codex resume`, `codex fork`, and `codex
    debug prompt-input`.
    - Made user-facing config writes go to the selected profile file when
    active, including TUI/settings persistence, app-server config writes,
    and MCP/app tool approval persistence.
    - Made plugin, marketplace, MCP, hooks, and config reload paths read
    from the merged user config so base and profile layers both participate.
    - Updated app-server config layer schemas to mark profile-backed user
    layers.
    
    ## Limits
    
    `--profile-v2` is still rejected for config-management subcommands such
    as feature, MCP, and marketplace edits. Those paths remain tied to the
    base `config.toml` until they have explicit profile-selection semantics.
    
    Some adjacent background writes may still update base or global state
    rather than the selected profile:
    
    - marketplace auto-upgrade metadata
    - automatic MCP dependency installs from skills
    - remote plugin sync or uninstall config edits
    - personality migration marker/default writes
    
    ## Verification
    
    Added targeted coverage for profile name validation, layer
    ordering/merging, selected-profile writes, app-server config writes,

  • feat(tui): add raw scrollback mode (#20819)
    ## Why
    
    Granular copy is particularly difficult with the current output. Part of
    it was solved with the introduction of the `/copy` command but when you
    only need to copy parts of a response, you still encounter some issues:
    
    - When you copy a paragraph, the result is a sequence of separate lines
    instead of one correctly joined paragraph.
    - When a word wraps, part of it stays on the original line and the rest
    appears at the start of the next line.
    - When you copy a long command, extra line breaks are often inserted,
    and command arguments can be split across multiple lines.

    Now that we own the scrollback and we re-create it when we resize, we
    have the opportunity of toggling between the raw text and the rich text
    we see today.
    
    - Add TUI raw scrollback mode with `tui.raw_output_mode`, `/raw
    [on|off]`, and the configurable `tui.keymap.global.toggle_raw_output`
    action.
    - Render transcript cells through rich/raw-aware paths so raw mode
    preserves source text and lets the terminal soft-wrap selection-friendly
    output.
    - Bind raw-mode toggle to `alt-r` by default, with the keybinding path
    toggling silently while `/raw` continues to emit confirmation messages.
    
    ## Related Issues
    
    Likely addressed by raw mode:
    
    - #12200: clean copy for multiline and soft-wrapped output. Raw mode
    removes Codex-inserted wrapping/indentation and lets the terminal
    soft-wrap logical lines.
    - #9252: command suggestions gain unwanted leading spaces when copied.
    Raw mode renders transcript text without the rich-mode left
    padding/gutter.
    - #8258: prompt output is hard to copy because of leading indentation.
    Raw mode renders user/source-backed transcript text without that
    decorative indentation.
    
    Partially or conditionally addressed:
    
    - #2880: copy/export message as Markdown. Raw mode exposes raw Markdown
    for terminal selection, but this PR does not add a dedicated
    export/copy-message command.
    - #19820: mouse drag selection + copy in the TUI. Raw mode improves
    terminal-native selection of output/history text, but this PR does not
    implement in-TUI mouse selection, highlighting, auto-copy, or composer
    selection.
    - #18979: copied content is divided into two parts. This should improve
    cases caused by Codex-inserted wraps/padding in rendered output; if the
    report is about pasting into the composer/input path, that remains

    `/status` was showing the configured `ModelProviderInfo.base_url` for
    Amazon Bedrock, which can be stale or misleading because the actual
    Bedrock Mantle endpoint is derived at runtime from the resolved AWS
    region. This made sessions report the wrong provider endpoint even
    though requests used the correct runtime URL.
    
    ## What changed
    
    - Added `ModelProvider::runtime_base_url()` so provider implementations
    can expose the request-time base URL through the shared runtime provider
    abstraction.
    - Moved Bedrock region-to-Mantle URL resolution into
    `amazon_bedrock::mantle::runtime_base_url()`, keeping region resolution
    private to the Mantle module.
    - Overrode `runtime_base_url()` for Amazon Bedrock so it returns the
    resolved Mantle endpoint instead of the configured default.
    - Resolved and cached the runtime provider base URL during TUI startup,
    then used that cached value when rendering `/status`.
    - Added status coverage that verifies Bedrock displays the runtime URL
    and ignores the configured Bedrock `base_url` when they differ.

    This PR also removes the obsolete compatibility surface that is no
    longer used after the migration. The proposed protocol-boundary verifier
    layer was dropped from the stack; enforcing that final boundary will be
    simpler once `codex-tui` no longer needs any `codex_protocol`
    references.

    `FileSystemSandboxPolicy` and `PermissionProfile`, so keeping it on
    `SandboxPolicy` makes every legacy projection reintroduce lossy
    read-root bookkeeping and creates unnecessary noise in the rest of the
    permissions migration.
    
    This PR makes the legacy policy model narrower and explicit:
    `SandboxPolicy::ReadOnly` and `SandboxPolicy::WorkspaceWrite` represent
    the old full-read sandbox modes only. Split readable roots, deny-read
    globs, and platform-default/minimal read behavior stay in the runtime

    boundary, and re-export this legacy bridge inside the TUI as

    Problem: /status only reported project-level AGENTS files, so sessions
    with a loaded global $CODEX_HOME/AGENTS.md still showed Agents.md as
    <none>.
    
    Solution: Track the global instructions file loaded during config
    initialization and prepend that path to the /status Agents.md summary,
    with coverage for AGENTS.md, AGENTS.override.md, and global-plus-project
    ordering.
  • fix(tui): reduce startup and new-session latency (#17039)
    ## TL;DR
    
    - Fetches account/rateLimits/read asynchronously so the TUI can continue
    starting without waiting for the rate-limit response.
    - Fixes the /status card so it no longer leaves a stale “refreshing
    cached limits...” notice in terminal history.
    
    ## Problem
    
    The TUI bootstrap path fetched account rate limits synchronously
    (`account/rateLimits/read`) before the event loop started for
    ChatGPT/OpenAI-authenticated startups. This added ~670 ms of blocking
    latency in the measured hot-start case, even though rate-limit data is
    not needed to render the initial UI or accept user input. The delay was
    especially noticeable on hot starts where every other RPC
    (`account/read`, `model/list`, `thread/start`) completed in under 70 ms
    total.
    
    Moving that fetch to the background also exposed a `/status` UI bug: the
    status card is flattened into terminal scrollback when it is inserted. A
    transient "refreshing limits in background..." line could not be cleared
    later, because the async completion updated the retained `HistoryCell`,
    not the already-written terminal history.
    
    ## Mental model
    
    Before this change, `AppServerSession::bootstrap()` performed three
    sequential RPCs: `account/read` → `model/list` →
    `account/rateLimits/read`. The result of the third call was baked into
    `AppServerBootstrap` and applied to the chat widget before the event
    loop began.
    
    After this change, `bootstrap()` only performs two RPCs (`account/read`
    + `model/list`), and rate-limit fetching is kicked off as an async
    background task immediately after the first frame is scheduled. A new
    enum, `RateLimitRefreshOrigin`, tags each fetch so the event handler
    knows whether the result came from the startup prefetch or from a
    user-initiated `/status` command; they have different completion
    side-effects.
    
    The `get_login_status()` helper (used outside the main app flow) was
    also decoupled: it previously called the full `bootstrap()` just to
    check auth mode, wasting model-list and rate-limit work. It now calls
    the narrower `read_account()` directly.
    
    For `/status`, this PR keeps the background refresh request but stops
    printing transient refresh notices into status history when cached
    limits are already available. If a refresh updates the cache, the next
    `/status` command will render the new values.
    
    ## Non-goals
    
    - This change does not alter the rate-limit data itself.
    - This change does not introduce caching, retries, or staleness
    management for rate limits.
    - This change does not affect the `model/list` or `thread/start` RPCs;
    they remain on the critical startup path.
    
    ## Tradeoffs
    
    - **Stale-on-first-render**: The status bar will briefly show no
    rate-limit info until the background fetch completes; observed
    background fetches landed roughly in the 400-900 ms range after the UI
    appeared. This is acceptable because the user cannot meaningfully act on
    rate-limit data in the first fraction of a second.
    - **Error silence on startup prefetch**: If the startup prefetch fails,
    the error is logged but the UI is not notified (unlike `/status` refresh
    failures, which go through the status-command completion path). This
    avoids surfacing transient network errors as a startup blocker.
    - **Static `/status` history**: `/status` output is terminal history,
    not a live widget. The card now avoids progress-style language that
    would appear stuck in scrollback; users can run `/status` again to see
    newly cached values.
    - **`account_auth_mode` field removed from `AppServerBootstrap`**: The
    only consumer was `get_login_status()`, which no longer goes through
    `bootstrap()`. The field was dead weight.
    
    ## Architecture
    
    ### New types
    
    - `RateLimitRefreshOrigin` (in `app_event.rs`): A `Copy` enum
    distinguishing `StartupPrefetch` from `StatusCommand { request_id }`.
    Carried through `RefreshRateLimits` and `RateLimitsLoaded` events so the
    handler applies the right completion behavior.
    
    ### Modified types
    
    - `AppServerBootstrap`: Lost `account_auth_mode` and
    `rate_limit_snapshots`; gained `requires_openai_auth: bool` (passed
    through from the account response so the caller can decide whether to
    fire the prefetch).
    
    ### Control flow
    
    1. `bootstrap()` returns with `requires_openai_auth` and
    `has_chatgpt_account`.
    2. After scheduling the first frame, `App::run_inner` fires
    `refresh_rate_limits(StartupPrefetch)` if both flags are true.
    3. When `RateLimitsLoaded { StartupPrefetch, Ok(..) }` arrives,
    snapshots are applied and a frame is scheduled to repaint the status
    bar.
    4. When `RateLimitsLoaded { StartupPrefetch, Err(..) }` arrives, the
    error is logged and no UI update occurs.
    5. `/status`-initiated refreshes continue to use `StatusCommand {
    request_id }` and call `finish_status_rate_limit_refresh` on completion
    (success or failure).
    6. `/status` history cells with cached rate-limit rows no longer render
    an additional "refreshing limits" notice; the async refresh updates the
    cache for future status output.
    
    ### Extracted method
    
    - `AppServerSession::read_account()`: Factored out of `bootstrap()` so
    that `get_login_status()` can call it independently without triggering
    model-list or rate-limit work.
    
    ## Observability
    
    - The existing `tracing::warn!` for rate-limit fetch failures is
    preserved for the startup path.
    - No new metrics or spans are introduced. The startup-time improvement
    is observable via the existing `ready` timestamp in TUI startup logs.
    
    ## Tests
    
    - Existing tests in `status_command_tests.rs` are updated to match on
    `RateLimitRefreshOrigin::StatusCommand { request_id }` instead of a bare
    `request_id`.
    - Focused `/status` tests now assert that status history avoids
    transient refresh text, continues to request an async refresh, and uses
    refreshed cached limits in future status output.
    - No new tests are added for the startup prefetch path because it is a
    fire-and-forget spawn with no observable side-effect other than the
    widget state update, which is already covered by the
    snapshot-application tests.

    No behavior change intended; this is the mechanical import cleanup layer

  • fix: suppress status card expect_used warnings after #16351 (#16378)
    ## Why
    
    Follow-up to #16351.
    
    That PR synchronized Bazel clippy lint levels with Cargo, but two
    intentional `expect()` calls in `codex-rs/tui/src/status/card.rs` still
    tripped `clippy::expect_used` (I believe #16201 raced with #16351, which
    is why it was missed).
  • Fix stale /status rate limits in active TUI sessions (#16201)
    Fix stale weekly limit in `/status` (#16194): /status reused the
    session’s cached rate-limit snapshot, so the weekly remaining limit
    could stay frozen within an active session.
    
    With this change, we now dynamically update the rate limits after status
    is displayed.
    
    I needed to delete a few low-value test cases from the chatWidget tests
    because the test.rs file is really large, and the new tests in this PR
    pushed us over the 512K mandated limit. I'm working on a separate PR to
    refactor that test file.
  • Rename tui_app_server to tui (#16104)
    This is a follow-up to https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/15922. That
    previous PR deleted the old `tui` directory and left the new
    `tui_app_server` directory in place. This PR renames `tui_app_server` to
    `tui` and fixes up all references.
  • Remove the legacy TUI split (#15922)
    This is the part 1 of 2 PRs that will delete the `tui` /
    `tui_app_server` split. This part simply deletes the existing `tui`
    directory and marks the `tui_app_server` feature flag as removed. I left
    the `tui_app_server` feature flag in place for now so its presence
    doesn't result in an error. It is simply ignored.
    
    Part 2 will rename the `tui_app_server` directory `tui`. I did this as
    two parts to reduce visible code churn.

  • fix(tui): preserve URL clickability across all TUI views (#12067)
    ## Problem
    
    Long URLs containing `/` and `-` characters are split across multiple
    terminal lines by `textwrap`'s default hyphenation rules. This breaks
    terminal link detection: emulators can no longer identify the URL as
    clickable, and copy-paste yields a truncated fragment. The issue affects
    every view that renders user or agent text — exec output, history cells,
    markdown, the app-link setup screen, and the VT100 scrollback path.
    
    A secondary bug compounds the first: `desired_height()` calculations
    count logical lines rather than viewport rows. When a URL overflows its
    line and wraps visually, the height budget is too small, causing content
    to clip or leave gaps.
    
    Here is how the complete URL is interpreted by the terminal before
    (first line only) and after (complete URL):

    ## Mental model
    
    The TUI now treats URL-like tokens as atomic units that must never be
    split by the wrapping engine. Every call site that previously used
    `word_wrap_*` has been migrated to `adaptive_wrap_*`, which inspects
    each line for URL-like tokens and switches wrapping strategy
    accordingly:
    
    - **Non-URL lines** follow the existing `textwrap` path unchanged (word
    boundaries, optional indentation, hyphenation).
    - **URL-only lines** (with at most decorative markers like `│`, `-`,
    `1.`) are emitted unwrapped so terminal link detection works; ratatui's
    `Wrap { trim: false }` handles the final character wrap at render time.
    - **Mixed lines** (URL + substantive non-URL prose) flow through
    `adaptive_wrap_line` so prose wraps naturally at word boundaries while
    URL tokens remain unsplit.
    
    Height measurement everywhere now delegates to
    `Paragraph::line_count(width)`, which accounts for the visual row cost
    of overflowed lines. This single source of truth replaces ad-hoc line
    counting in individual cells.
    
    For terminal scrollback (the VT100 path that prints history when the TUI
    exits), URL-only lines are emitted unwrapped so the terminal's own link
    detector can find them. Mixed URL+prose lines use adaptive wrapping so
    surrounding text wraps naturally. Continuation rows are pre-cleared to
    avoid stale content artifacts.
    
    ## Non-goals
    
    - Full RFC 3986 URL parsing. The detector is a conservative heuristic
    that covers `scheme://host`, bare domains (`example.com/path`),
    `localhost:port`, and IPv4 hosts. IPv6 (`[::1]:8080`) and exotic schemes
    are intentionally excluded from v1.
    - Changing wrapping behavior for non-URL content.
    - Reflowing or reformatting existing terminal scrollback on resize.
    
    ## Tradeoffs

    26 new unit tests across 7 files, covering:
    
    - **URL integrity**: assert a URL-like token appears on exactly one
    rendered line (not split across two).
    - **Height accuracy**: compare `desired_height()` against
    `Paragraph::line_count()` for URL-containing content.
    - **Row-aware truncation**: verify ellipsis counts logical lines and
    output fits within the row budget.
    - **Scrollback rendering**: VT100 backend tests confirm prefix and URL
    land on the same row; continuation rows are cleared; mixed URL+prose
    lines wrap prose while preserving URL tokens.
    - **Mixed URL+prose detection**: `line_has_mixed_url_and_non_url_tokens`
    correctly distinguishes lines with substantive non-URL text from lines
    with only decorative markers alongside a URL.
    - **Heuristic correctness**: positive matches (`https://...`,
    `example.com/path`, `localhost:3000/api`, `192.168.1.1:8080/health`) and
    negative matches (`src/main.rs`, `foo/bar`, `hello-world`).
    
    ## Risks and open items
    
    1. **URL-like tokens in code output** (e.g. `example.com/api` inside a
    JSON blob) will trigger URL-preserving wrap on that line. This is
    acceptable — the worst case is a slightly wider line, not broken output.
    2. **Very long non-URL tokens on a URL line** can only break at
    character boundaries (the custom splitter emits all char indices for
    non-URL words). On extremely narrow terminals this could overflow, but
    narrow terminals already degrade gracefully.
    3. **No IPv6 support** — `[::1]:8080/path` will be treated as a non-URL
    and may get split. Can be added later without API changes.

  • chore: remove codex-core public protocol/shell re-exports (#12432)
    ## Why
    
    `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exported a broad set of types and modules
    from `codex-protocol` and `codex-shell-command`. That made it easy for
    workspace crates to import those APIs through `codex-core`, which in
    turn hides dependency edges and makes it harder to reduce compile-time
    coupling over time.
    
    This change removes those public re-exports so call sites must import
    from the source crates directly. Even when a crate still depends on
    `codex-core` today, this makes dependency boundaries explicit and
    unblocks future work to drop `codex-core` dependencies where possible.
    
    ## What Changed
    
    - Removed public re-exports from `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` for:
    - `codex_protocol::protocol` and related protocol/model types (including
    `InitialHistory`)
      - `codex_protocol::config_types` (`protocol_config_types`)
    - `codex_shell_command::{bash, is_dangerous_command, is_safe_command,
    parse_command, powershell}`
    - Migrated workspace Rust call sites to import directly from:
      - `codex_protocol::protocol`
      - `codex_protocol::config_types`
      - `codex_protocol::models`
      - `codex_shell_command`
    - Added explicit `Cargo.toml` dependencies (`codex-protocol` /
    `codex-shell-command`) in crates that now import those crates directly.
    - Kept `codex-core` internal modules compiling by using `pub(crate)`
    aliases in `core/src/lib.rs` (internal-only, not part of the public
    API).
    - Updated the two utility crates that can already drop a `codex-core`
    dependency edge entirely:
      - `codex-utils-approval-presets`
      - `codex-utils-cli`
    
    ## Verification
