mchen-oaiandGitHub af99f6a72f core: cache the tool search handler per session (#27258)
## Why

Tool router construction rebuilds the deferred-tool BM25 index during
session initialization and before each sampling continuation, even when
the searchable tool metadata is unchanged. Local profiling measured
`append_tool_search_executor` at roughly 113 ms per continuation, making
repeated index construction the largest measured router-building cost.

## What changed

- Add a session-scoped `ToolSearchHandlerCache` so continuations and
user turns can reuse the existing handler.
- Key reuse on the complete ordered `Vec<ToolSearchInfo>`, rebuilding
when searchable text, loadable tool specs, source metadata, or ordering
changes.
- Build handlers outside the cache lock and recheck before publishing
them, avoiding holding the mutex during index construction.

## Verification

- `cache_reuses_identical_search_infos_and_rebuilds_changed_inputs`
covers exact cache reuse and invalidation when the ordered search
metadata changes.
- Local rollout profiling showed the initial router build populating the
cache and unchanged later continuations reusing it:
  - uncached: 118 ms median across 14 spans from 3 rollouts
  - cached: 4 ms median across 12 spans from 3 rollouts

viyatb-oaiandGitHub 9152ebd289 fix(linux-sandbox): preserve shell cleanup on interruption (#22729)
## Why
Interrupted `shell_command` calls can race with the outer tool-dispatch
cancellation path. When that happens, the runtime future may be dropped
before the spawned process gets a chance to run `SIGTERM` cleanup. For
bwrapd-backed Linux sandbox commands, that can leave synthetic
protected-path mount bookkeeping such as `.git/.codex` registrations
under `/tmp` behind after a TUI interruption.

The relevant cancellation points are the outer dispatch race in
[`core/src/tools/parallel.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/bd184ba84703cc924921ed883f0cf17d3dba60ff/codex-rs/core/src/tools/parallel.rs#L91-L132)
and the process shutdown logic in
[`core/src/exec.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/bd184ba84703cc924921ed883f0cf17d3dba60ff/codex-rs/core/src/exec.rs#L1367-L1393).

## What changed
- Keep `shell_command` dispatch alive long enough for the runtime to
finish cancellation cleanup instead of immediately returning the
synthetic aborted response.
- Fold shell-turn cancellation into the existing `ExecExpiration` path
in
[`core/src/tools/runtimes/shell.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/bd184ba84703cc924921ed883f0cf17d3dba60ff/codex-rs/core/src/tools/runtimes/shell.rs#L267-L274),
so cancellation and timeout behavior stay centralized.
- On cancellation, send `SIGTERM` first, wait briefly for cleanup to
run, then hard-kill any remaining descendants in the original process
group.
- Treat `ESRCH` as an already-gone process-group cleanup case in
`codex-utils-pty`, which keeps best-effort teardown from surfacing a
stale-process race as an error.

## Verification
- `cargo test -p codex-core cancellation`
- Added regression coverage for:
  - `shell_tool_cancellation_waits_for_runtime_cleanup`
  - `process_exec_tool_call_cancellation_allows_sigterm_cleanup`

jif-oaiandGitHub 05e171094d Remove ToolsConfig from tool planning (#22835)
## Why

`codex-tools` is meant to hold reusable tool primitives, but
`ToolsConfig` had become a second copy of core runtime decisions instead
of a small shared contract. It carried provider capabilities, auth/model
gates, permission and environment state, web/search/image feature gates,
multi-agent settings, and goal availability from core into `codex-tools`
([definition](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/22dd9ad3929253ed24d7ee4f10f238e95ab25f37/codex-rs/tools/src/tool_config.rs#L97),
[stored on each
`TurnContext`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/22dd9ad3929253ed24d7ee4f10f238e95ab25f37/codex-rs/core/src/session/turn_context.rs#L87)).
Every session/context variant then had to build and mutate that snapshot
before assembling tools.

This PR removes that master object instead of renaming it. Tool planning
now reads the live `TurnContext`, where `codex-core` already owns those
decisions, while `codex-tools` keeps only reusable primitives and a
generic `ToolSetBuilder`/`ToolSet` accumulator.

## What Changed

- Removed `ToolsConfig` / `ToolsConfigParams` from `codex-tools`; the
crate keeps the shared helpers that still belong there, including
request-user-input mode selection, shell backend/type resolution,
`UnifiedExecShellMode`, and `ToolEnvironmentMode`.
- Replaced config-snapshot planning with `ToolRouter::from_turn_context`
and a `spec_plan` pipeline over `CoreToolPlanContext`, deriving provider
capabilities, auth gates, model support, feature gates, environment
count, goal support, multi-agent options, web search, and image
generation from the authoritative turn state.
- Added generic `codex_tools::ToolSetBuilder` / `ToolSet`, plus the
small core adapter needed to accumulate `CoreToolRuntime` values and
hosted model specs.
- Added the `tool_family::shell` registration module and moved
shell/unified-exec/memory accounting call sites to read the narrow
per-turn fields directly.
- Narrowed `TurnContext` to the remaining explicit per-turn fields
needed by planning: `available_models`, `unified_exec_shell_mode`, and
`goal_tools_supported`.
- Reworked MCP exposure and tool-search setup so deferred/direct MCP
behavior is driven by the current turn rather than a precomputed config
snapshot.
- Replaced the large expected-spec fixture tests with focused
behavior-level coverage for shell tools, environments, goal and
agent-job gates, MCP direct/deferred exposure, tool search,
request-plugin-install, code mode, multi-agent mode, hosted tools, and
extension executor dispatch.

jif-oaiandGitHub c69cde3547 Add tool lifecycle extension contributor (#23309)
## Why

Extensions that need to track runtime progress currently have no typed
host signal for tool execution. The goal extension in particular needs
to observe tool attempts without inspecting tool payloads, owning tool
implementations, or staying coupled to core-only runtime plumbing.

This adds a narrow lifecycle contributor API for host-owned tool
execution: extensions can observe when an accepted tool call starts and
how it finishes, while policy hooks and tool handlers continue to own
payload rewriting, blocking, and execution.

Relevant code:

-
[`ToolLifecycleContributor`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/3ad2850ffc7d8a1da19c65a92425637a59098f1b/codex-rs/ext/extension-api/src/contributors.rs#L119)
defines the extension-facing observer contract.
-
[`tool_lifecycle.rs`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/3ad2850ffc7d8a1da19c65a92425637a59098f1b/codex-rs/ext/extension-api/src/contributors/tool_lifecycle.rs)
defines the typed start/finish inputs, source, and outcome enums.
- [`notify_tool_start` /
`notify_tool_finish`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/3ad2850ffc7d8a1da19c65a92425637a59098f1b/codex-rs/core/src/tools/lifecycle.rs)
bridges core tool dispatch into the extension registry.

## What Changed

- Added `ToolLifecycleContributor` to `codex-extension-api`, including:
  - `ToolStartInput`
  - `ToolFinishInput`
  - `ToolCallSource`
  - `ToolCallOutcome`
- Added registration and lookup support on `ExtensionRegistryBuilder` /
`ExtensionRegistry`.
- Wired core tool dispatch to notify lifecycle contributors for:
  - accepted tool starts
  - completed tool calls, including the tool output success marker
  - pre-tool-use blocks
  - failures before or after the handler runs
  - cancellation/abort in the parallel tool path
- Registered the goal extension as a lifecycle contributor and added the
outcome filter it will use for goal progress accounting.

## Test Coverage

- Added `dispatch_notifies_tool_lifecycle_contributors` to cover
lifecycle notification ordering and outcomes for successful and
handler-failed tool calls.

jif-oaiandGitHub 6f1a01fbdd Simplify tool executor and registry plumbing (#22636)
## Why

The tool runtime path still had a typed output associated type on
`ToolExecutor`, plus a core-only `RegisteredTool` adapter and
extension-only executor aliases. That made every new shared tool runtime
carry extra adapter plumbing before it could participate in core
dispatch, extension tools, hook payloads, telemetry, and model-visible
spec generation.

This PR moves output erasure to the shared executor boundary so core and
extension tools can use the same execution contract directly.

## What Changed

- Changed `codex_tools::ToolExecutor` to return `Box<dyn ToolOutput>`
instead of an associated `Output` type.
- Removed the extension-specific `ExtensionToolExecutor` /
`ExtensionToolOutput` aliases and exposed `ToolExecutor<ToolCall>` plus
`ToolOutput` through `codex-extension-api`.
- Reworked core tool registration around `CoreToolRuntime` and
`ToolRegistry::from_tools`, removing the extra `RegisteredTool` /
`ToolRegistryBuilder` layer.
- Consolidated model-visible spec planning and registry construction in
`core/src/tools/spec_plan.rs`, including deferred tool search and
code-mode-only filtering.
- Added `ToolOutput` helpers for post-tool-use hook ids and inputs so
MCP, unified exec, extension, and other boxed outputs preserve the same
hook payload behavior.
- Updated core handlers, memories tools, and the related
registry/spec/router tests to use the simplified contract.

## Test Coverage

- Updated coverage for tool spec planning, registry lookup, deferred
tool search registration, extension tool routing, post-tool-use hook
payloads, dispatch tracing, guardian output extraction, and memories
extension tool execution.

jif-oaiandGitHub 6d65686313 feat: make ToolExecutor an async trait (#22560)
## Why

`codex_tools::ToolExecutor` keeps a tool spec attached to its runtime
handler, but extension tools still carried a parallel
`ExtensionToolFuture` / `ExtensionToolExecutor` shape. That made
extension-owned tools look different from host tools even though
routing, registration, and execution need the same abstraction.

This PR makes the shared executor contract directly async and lets
extension tools implement it too, so host tools and extension tools can
move through the same registration path.

## What changed

- Changed `ToolExecutor::handle` to an `async fn` using `async-trait`,
and updated built-in tool handlers to implement the async trait
directly.
- Replaced the bespoke `ExtensionToolFuture` contract with a marker
`ExtensionToolExecutor` over `ToolExecutor<ToolCall, Output =
JsonToolOutput>`, re-exporting `ToolExecutor` from
`codex-extension-api`.
- Updated the memories extension tools to implement the shared executor
trait.
- Split tool-router construction into collected executors plus hosted
model specs, keeping hosted tools like web search and image generation
separate from executable handlers.
- Updated spec/router tests and extension-tool stubs for the new
executor shape.

jif-oaiandGitHub fc26af377f feat: expose multi-agent v2 as model-only tools (#22514)
## Why

`code_mode_only` filters code-mode nested tools out of the top-level
tool list. For multi-agent v2, we need a rollout shape where the
collaboration tools remain callable as normal model tools without also
being embedded into the code-mode `exec` tool declaration.

Related to this:
https://openai-corpws.slack.com/archives/C0AQLHB4U75/p1778660267922549

## What Changed

- Adds `features.multi_agent_v2.non_code_mode_only`, including config
resolution, profile override handling, and generated schema coverage.
- Introduces `ToolExposure::DirectModelOnly` so a tool can be included
in the initial model-visible list while staying out of the nested
code-mode tool surface.
- Applies that exposure to the multi-agent v2 tools when the new flag is
set: `spawn_agent`, `send_message`, `followup_task`, `wait_agent`,
`close_agent`, and `list_agents`.
- Updates code-mode-only filtering so direct-model-only tools remain
visible while ordinary nested code-mode tools are still hidden.

## Verification

- Added config parsing/profile tests for `non_code_mode_only`.
- Added tool spec coverage for the code-mode-only multi-agent v2
exposure behavior.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 83decfa300 [codex] Remove unused legacy shell tools (#22246)
## Why

Recent session history showed no active use of the raw `shell`,
`local_shell`, or `container.exec` execution surfaces. Keeping those
handlers/specs wired into core leaves duplicate shell execution paths
alongside the supported `shell_command` and unified exec tools.

## What changed

- Removed the raw `shell` handler/spec and its `ShellToolCallParams`
protocol helper.
- Removed the legacy `local_shell` and `container.exec` handler/spec
plumbing while preserving persisted-history compatibility for old
response items.
- Normalized model/config `default` and `local` shell selections to
`shell_command`.
- Pruned tests that exercised removed raw-shell/local-shell/apply-patch
variants and kept coverage on `shell_command`, unified exec, and
freeform `apply_patch`.

jif-oaiandGitHub fdda59c00b Introduce tool exposure for deferred registration (#22489)
## Why

Deferred tools were tracked with separate side-channel filtering after
tool specs had already been assembled. That made the registry
responsible for executing tools while the router/spec planner separately
decided whether those same tools should be exposed to the model up
front.

This PR makes exposure part of the tool handler contract so direct
versus deferred availability travels with the executable tool
registration.

Next step will be to simplify registration

## What Changed

- Adds `ToolExposure` to `codex-tools` and exposes it through
`ToolExecutor`, defaulting tools to `Direct`.
- Teaches dynamic tools and MCP handlers to mark deferred tools as
`Deferred` at construction time.
- Renames the registry object-safe wrapper from `AnyToolHandler` to
`RegisteredTool` and uses `ToolExposure` when deciding whether to
include a handler's spec in the initial model-visible tool list.
- Refactors tool spec planning to derive direct specs and deferred
search entries from registered handlers, removing the router's
special-case deferred dynamic tool filtering.

jif-oaiandGitHub 9c5dfa7b1a Refactor extension tools onto shared ToolExecutor (#22369)
## Why

Extension tools were split across two public runtime contracts:
`codex-tool-api` exposed `ToolBundle` plus its own call/spec/error
types, while core native tools used `codex_tools::ToolExecutor`. That
made contributed tool specs and execution behavior easy to drift apart
and added another crate boundary for what should be one executable-tool
seam.

This PR makes `ToolExecutor` the single runtime contract and keeps
extension-specific pinning in `codex-extension-api`.

## Remaining todo

Either generic `Invocation` or sub-extract the `ToolCall` and clean
`ToolInvocation`

## What changed

- Removed the `codex-tool-api` workspace crate and its dependencies from
core and `codex-extension-api`.
- Made `codex_tools::ToolExecutor` object-safe with `async_trait` so
extension contributors can return a dyn executor.
- Added the extension-facing aliases under
`ext/extension-api/src/contributors/tools.rs`, including
`ExtensionToolExecutor = dyn ToolExecutor<ToolCall, Output =
ExtensionToolOutput>`.
- Changed `ToolContributor::tools` to return extension executors
directly instead of `ToolBundle`s.
- Updated core’s extension tool handler/registry/router path to adapt
those extension executors into the existing native `ToolInvocation`
runtime path.
- Added focused coverage for extension tools being registered,
model-visible, dispatchable, and not replacing built-in tools.

sayan-oaiandGitHub 2304ec45ca Remove unavailable MCP placeholder tool backfill (#22439)
## Why

`UnavailableDummyTools` kept synthetic placeholder tools alive for
historical tool calls whose backing MCP tool was no longer available.
That path adds stale model-visible tool specs and special routing at the
point where unavailable MCP calls should use ordinary current-tool
handling. This removes the runtime backfill instead of preserving a
second compatibility lane.

## Is it safe to remove?

The unavailable tools were added in #17853 after a CS issue when a
previously-called MCP tool failed to load and was omitted from the CS
spec. Now that we have tool search, I think this is resolved:
- API merges tools from previous TST output into effective tool set so
theyre always in CS spec
- if an MCP tool surfaced by TST later becomes unavailable, the model
can still call it and it will just return model-visible error
- both TST output and function call output are dropped on compaction so
model will not remember old calls to MCP post compaction

## What changed

- Delete unavailable-tool collection, placeholder handler, router/spec
plumbing, and obsolete placeholder coverage.
- Keep `features.unavailable_dummy_tools` as a removed no-op feature
tombstone so existing configs still parse cleanly.
- Add an integration-style `tool_search` regression test showing that a
deferred MCP tool surfaced through `tool_search` still routes through
MCP and returns a model-visible tool-call error rather than `unsupported
call`.

## Verification

- `cargo test -p codex-core tool_search`

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 0173f71143 Refactor namespaced tool spec registration (#22256)
## Summary

This refactor makes tool handlers the owner of the specs they can
publish, so registry construction can register handlers once and
separately publish only the specs that should be model-visible.

The main motivation is deferred tools: MCP and dynamic tools still need
handlers registered up front, but deferred tools should be discoverable
through `tool_search` rather than emitted in the initial tool spec list.

## What changed

- `McpHandler` and `DynamicToolHandler` can return their own `ToolSpec`.
- `build_tool_registry_builder` now collects handlers, registers them
through the no-spec path, and publishes only non-deferred handler specs.
- Deferred MCP and dynamic tool names are combined into one
`all_deferred_tools` set that drives spec filtering, code-mode
deferred-tool signaling, and `tool_search` registration.
- `tool_search` registration now requires both deferred tools and
`namespace_tools`.
- Namespace specs are merged in `spec_plan`, preserving top-level spec
order, sorting tools within each namespace, and backfilling empty
namespace descriptions.
- Hosted web search and image-generation specs are included in the
collected spec vector before namespace merge/publication, and tool-name
tests that should not care about hosted relative order now compare sets.

## Testing

the same focused test reproduces on `origin/main`.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 960d42ddae code-mode: carry nested tool kind through runtime (#22377)
## Why

Code mode only used nested spec lookup at execution time to rediscover
whether a nested tool should be invoked as a function tool or a freeform
tool.

That information is already present in the enabled tool metadata that
code mode builds to expose `tools.*` and `ALL_TOOLS`, so re-looking it
up from the router was redundant and kept execution coupled to a
separate spec lookup path.

## What Changed

- thread `CodeModeToolKind` through the code-mode runtime `ToolCall`
event and `CodeModeNestedToolCall`
- emit the nested tool kind directly from the V8 callback using the
already-enabled tool metadata
- build nested tool payloads from the propagated kind instead of calling
`find_spec`
- remove the now-unused `find_spec` plumbing from the router and
parallel runtime helpers
- add unit coverage for function vs freeform payload shaping and update
affected router tests

pakrym-oaiandGitHub c9e46ed639 [codex] Make handlers own parallel tool support (#22254)
## Why

`ToolRouter::tool_supports_parallel()` was still consulting configured
specs when a handler lookup missed, even though parallel schedulability
is really a property of the executable handler. Keeping that metadata on
`ConfiguredToolSpec` duplicated state between the model-visible spec
layer and the runtime handler layer.

This change makes handlers the sole source of truth for parallel tool
support and removes the extra spec wrapper that only existed to carry
duplicated metadata.

## What changed

- removed `ConfiguredToolSpec` and store plain `ToolSpec` values in the
registry/router builder path
- changed `ToolRouter::tool_supports_parallel()` to consult only the
handler registry and fall back to `false`
- simplified spec collection and test helpers to operate directly on

pakrym-oaiandGitHub ed5944ba1d Simplify MCP tool handler plumbing (#21595)
## Why
The MCP tool path had accumulated a few core-owned special cases: a
dedicated payload variant, resolver plumbing, a legacy `AfterToolUse`
translation path, and a side channel for parallel-call metadata. That
made `ToolRegistry` and the spec builder know more about MCP than they
needed to.

This change moves MCP-specific execution details back onto `ToolInfo`
and `McpHandler` so `codex-core` can treat MCP calls like normal
function calls while still preserving MCP-specific dispatch and
telemetry behavior where it belongs.

## What changed
- removed `resolve_mcp_tool_info`, `ToolPayload::Mcp`, `ToolKind`, and
the remaining registry-side MCP resolver path
- stored MCP routing metadata directly on `McpHandler` and `ToolInfo`,
including `supports_parallel_tool_calls`
- deleted the legacy `AfterToolUse` consumer in `core`, which removes
the need for handler-specific `after_tool_use_payload` implementations
- switched tool-result telemetry to handler-provided tags and kept
MCP-specific dispatch payload construction inside the handler
- simplified tool spec planning/building by passing `ToolInfo` directly
and dropping the direct/deferred MCP wrapper structs and the
parallel-server side table

jif-oaiandGitHub 672cc1f669 feat: wire extension tool bundles into core (#22147)
## Why

This is the next narrow step toward moving concrete tool families out of
core. After #22138 introduced `codex-tool-api`, we still needed a real
end-to-end seam that lets an extension own an executable tool definition
once and have core install it without the temporary `extension-api`
wrapper or a dependency on `codex-tools`.

`codex-tool-api` is the small extension-facing execution contract, while
`codex-tools` still has a different job: host-side shared tool metadata
and planning logic that is not “run this contributed tool”, like spec
shaping, namespaces, discovery, code-mode augmentation, and
MCP/dynamic-to-Responses API conversion

## What changed

- Moved the shared leaf tool-spec and JSON Schema types into
`codex-tool-api`, so the executable contract now lives with
[`ToolBundle`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/c538758095337d4fe0a52a172363ccede4066bda/codex-rs/tool-api/src/bundle.rs#L19-L70).
- Replaced the temporary extension-side tool wrapper with direct
`ToolBundle` use in `codex-extension-api`.
- Taught core to collect contributed bundles, include them in spec
planning, register them through
[`ToolRegistryBuilder::register_tool_bundle`](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/c538758095337d4fe0a52a172363ccede4066bda/codex-rs/core/src/tools/registry.rs#L653-L667),
and dispatch them through the existing router/runtime path.
- Added focused coverage for contributed tools becoming model-visible
and dispatchable, plus spec-planning coverage for contributed function
and freeform tools.

## Verification

- Added `extension_tool_bundles_are_model_visible_and_dispatchable` in
`core/src/tools/router_tests.rs`.
- Added spec-plan coverage in `core/src/tools/spec_plan_tests.rs` for
contributed extension bundles.

pakrym-oaiandGitHub 857e731478 [codex] Remove string-keyed MCP tool maps (#21454)
## Summary

This PR removes the synthetic `HashMap<String, ToolInfo>` keys from MCP
tool discovery. `McpConnectionManager::list_all_tools()` now returns
normalized `Vec<ToolInfo>`, and downstream code derives identity from
`ToolInfo::canonical_tool_name()`.

The motivation is to keep model-visible tool identity on
`ToolName`/`ToolInfo` instead of parallel string map keys, so future
namespace changes do not have to preserve otherwise-unused lookup keys.

## Changes

- Rename the MCP normalization path from `qualify_tools` to
`normalize_tools_for_model` and return tool values directly.
- Flow MCP tool lists through connectors, plugin injection, router/spec
building, code mode, and tool search as vectors/slices.
- Keep direct/deferred subtraction local to `mcp_tool_exposure`, using
`ToolName` values.
- Update tests to compare `ToolName` instances where MCP identity
matters.

sayan-oaiandGitHub 85c1500569 fix: filter dynamic deferred tools from model_visible_specs (#19771)
fixes #19486

### Problem
Right now dynamic deferred tools are filtered at normal-turn prompt
building time, rather than upstream while building the `ToolRouter`
itself. This causes issues because dynamic deferred tools are then
wrongly included in the router's `model_visible_specs`, which is what
the compaction request-building flow relies on.

### Fix
Move the dynamic deferred tool filtering to `ToolRouter` creation time
to solve this problem for every request that relies on `ToolRouter` for
`model_visible_specs`, which solves the issue generically.

### Tests
Added unit + integration tests to ensure dynamic deferred tools are
omitted from `model_visible_specs` and compaction request respectively.

Tested against live `/compact` endpoint; raw deferred dynamic tools
without `tool_search` returned `400` (current bug), while the filtered
payload (this fix) returns `200`.

cassirer-openaiandGitHub 6d09b6752d [rollout_trace] Trace tool and code-mode boundaries (#18878)
## Summary

Extends rollout tracing across tool dispatch and code-mode runtime
boundaries. This records canonical tool-call lifecycle events and links
code-mode execution/wait operations back to the model-visible calls that
caused them.

## Stack

This is PR 3/5 in the rollout trace stack.

- [#18876](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18876): Add rollout
trace crate
- [#18877](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18877): Record core
session rollout traces
- [#18878](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18878): Trace tool and
code-mode boundaries
- [#18879](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18879): Trace sessions
and multi-agent edges
- [#18880](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/18880): Add debug trace
reduction command

## Review Notes

This PR is about attribution. Reviewers should focus on whether direct
tool calls, code-mode-originated tool calls, waits, outputs, and
cancellation boundaries are recorded with enough source information for
deterministic reduction without coupling the reducer to live runtime
internals.

The stack remains valid after this layer: tool and code-mode traces
reduce through the existing crate model, while the broader session and
multi-agent relationships are added in the next PR.

sayan-oaiandGitHub 0df7e9a820 register all mcp tools with namespace (#17404)
stacked on #17402.

MCP tools returned by `tool_search` (deferred tools) get registered in
our `ToolRegistry` with a different format than directly available
tools. this leads to two different ways of accessing MCP tools from our
tool catalog, only one of which works for each. fix this by registering
all MCP tools with the namespace format, since this info is already
available.

also, direct MCP tools are registered to responsesapi without a
namespace, while deferred MCP tools have a namespace. this means we can
receive MCP `FunctionCall`s in both formats from namespaces. fix this by
always registering MCP tools with namespace, regardless of deferral
status.

make code mode track `ToolName` provenance of tools so it can map the
literal JS function name string to the correct `ToolName` for
invocation, rather than supporting both in core.

this lets us unify to a single canonical `ToolName` representation for
each MCP tool and force everywhere to use that one, without supporting
fallbacks.

josiah-openaiandGitHub 937dd3812d Add supports_parallel_tool_calls flag to included mcps (#17667)
## Why

For more advanced MCP usage, we want the model to be able to emit
parallel MCP tool calls and have Codex execute eligible ones
concurrently, instead of forcing all MCP calls through the serial block.

The main design choice was where to thread the config. I made this
server-level because parallel safety depends on the MCP server
implementation. Codex reads the flag from `mcp_servers`, threads the
opted-in server names into `ToolRouter`, and checks the parsed
`ToolPayload::Mcp { server, .. }` at execution time. That avoids relying
on model-visible tool names, which can be incomplete in
deferred/search-tool paths or ambiguous for similarly named
servers/tools.

## What was added

Added `supports_parallel_tool_calls` for MCP servers.

Before:

```toml
[mcp_servers.docs]
command = "docs-server"
```

After:

```toml
[mcp_servers.docs]
command = "docs-server"
supports_parallel_tool_calls = true
```

MCP calls remain serial by default. Only tools from opted-in servers are
eligible to run in parallel. Docs also now warn to enable this only when
the server’s tools are safe to run concurrently, especially around
shared state or read/write races.

## Testing

Tested with a local stdio MCP server exposing real delay tools. The
model/Responses side was mocked only to deterministically emit two MCP
calls in the same turn.

Each test called `query_with_delay` and `query_with_delay_2` with `{
"seconds": 25 }`.

| Build/config | Observed | Wall time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| main with flag enabled | serial | `58.79s` |
| PR with flag enabled | parallel | `31.73s` |
| PR without flag | serial | `56.70s` |

PR with flag enabled showed both tools start before either completed;
main and PR-without-flag completed the first delay before starting the
second.

Also added an integration test.

Additional checks:

- `cargo test -p codex-tools` passed
- `cargo test -p codex-core
mcp_parallel_support_uses_exact_payload_server` passed
- `git diff --check` passed

Matthew ZengandGitHub d7f99b0fa6 [mcp] Expand tool search to custom MCPs. (#16944)
- [x] Expand tool search to custom MCPs.
- [x] Rename several variables/fields to be more generic.

Updated tool & server name lifecycles:

**Raw Identity**

ToolInfo.server_name is raw MCP server name.
ToolInfo.tool.name is raw MCP tool name.
MCP calls route back to raw via parse_tool_name() returning
(tool.server_name, tool.tool.name).
mcpServerStatus/list now groups by raw server and keys tools by
Tool.name: mod.rs:599
App-server just forwards that grouped raw snapshot:
codex_message_processor.rs:5245

**Callable Names**

On list-tools, we create provisional callable_namespace / callable_name:
mcp_connection_manager.rs:1556
For non-app MCP, provisional callable name starts as raw tool name.
For codex-apps, provisional callable name is sanitized and strips
connector name/id prefix; namespace includes connector name.
Then qualify_tools() sanitizes callable namespace + name to ASCII alnum
/ _ only: mcp_tool_names.rs:128
Note: this is stricter than Responses API. Hyphen is currently replaced
with _ for code-mode compatibility.

**Collision Handling**

We do initially collapse example-server and example_server to the same
base.
Then qualify_tools() detects distinct raw namespace identities behind
the same sanitized namespace and appends a hash to the callable
namespace: mcp_tool_names.rs:137
Same idea for tool-name collisions: hash suffix goes on callable tool
name.
Final list_all_tools() map key is callable_namespace + callable_name:
mcp_connection_manager.rs:769

**Direct Model Tools**

Direct MCP tool declarations use the full qualified sanitized key as the
Responses function name.
The raw rmcp Tool is converted but renamed for model exposure.

**Tool Search / Deferred**

Tool search result namespace = final ToolInfo.callable_namespace:
tool_search.rs:85
Tool search result nested name = final ToolInfo.callable_name:
tool_search.rs:86
Deferred tool handler is registered as "{namespace}:{name}":
tool_registry_plan.rs:248
When a function call comes back, core recombines namespace + name, looks
up the full qualified key, and gets the raw server/tool for MCP
execution: codex.rs:4353

**Separate Legacy Snapshot**

collect_mcp_snapshot_from_manager_with_detail() still returns a map
keyed by qualified callable name.
mcpServerStatus/list no longer uses that; it uses
McpServerStatusSnapshot, which is raw-inventory shaped.

Michael BolinandGitHub aa2403e2eb core: remove cross-crate re-exports from lib.rs (#16512)
## Why

`codex-core` was re-exporting APIs owned by sibling `codex-*` crates,
which made downstream crates depend on `codex-core` as a proxy module
instead of the actual owner crate.

Removing those forwards makes crate boundaries explicit and lets leaf
crates drop unnecessary `codex-core` dependencies. In this PR, this
reduces the dependency on `codex-core` to `codex-login` in the following
files:

```
codex-rs/backend-client/Cargo.toml
codex-rs/mcp-server/tests/common/Cargo.toml
```

## What

- Remove `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exports for symbols owned by
`codex-login`, `codex-mcp`, `codex-rollout`, `codex-analytics`,
`codex-protocol`, `codex-shell-command`, `codex-sandboxing`,
`codex-tools`, and `codex-utils-path`.
- Delete the `default_client` forwarding shim in `codex-rs/core`.
- Update in-crate and downstream callsites to import directly from the
owning `codex-*` crate.
- Add direct Cargo dependencies where callsites now target the owner
crate, and remove `codex-core` from `codex-rs/backend-client`.
2026-04-01 23:06:24 -07:00
Michael BolinandGitHub 7c1c633f3f core: use codex-tools config types directly (#16504)
## Why

`codex-rs/tools/src/lib.rs` already defines the [canonical `codex_tools`
export
surface](https://github.com/openai/codex/blob/bf081b9e286e620d25c1d61cf0f38f74a0f982ce/codex-rs/tools/src/lib.rs#L83-L88)
for `ToolsConfig`, `ToolsConfigParams`, and the shell backend config
types. Re-exporting those same types from `core/src/tools/spec.rs` gives
`codex-core` two import paths for one API and blurs which crate owns
those config definitions.

This PR removes that duplicate path so `codex-core` callsites depend on
`codex_tools` directly.

## What

- Remove the five `codex_tools` re-exports from
`core/src/tools/spec.rs`.
- Update `codex-core` production and test callsites to import
`ShellCommandBackendConfig`, `ToolsConfig`, `ToolsConfigParams`,
`UnifiedExecShellMode`, and `ZshForkConfig` from `codex_tools`.

## Verification

- Ran `cargo test -p codex-core`.
- The package run is currently red in five unrelated config tests in
`core/src/config/config_tests.rs` (`approvals_reviewer_*` and
`smart_approvals_alias_*`), while the tool/spec and shell tests touched
by this import cleanup passed.
2026-04-01 21:16:44 -07:00
Michael BolinandGitHub d4464125c5 Remove client_common tool re-exports (#16482)
## Why

`codex-rs/core/src/client_common.rs` still had a `tools` re-export
module that forwarded `codex_tools` types back into `codex-core`. After
the earlier extraction work in #16379, #16471, #16477, and #16481, that
extra layer no longer adds value.

Removing it keeps dependencies explicit: the `codex-core` modules that
actually use `ToolSpec` and related types now depend on `codex_tools`
directly instead of reaching through `client_common`.

## What Changed

- removed the `client_common::tools` re-export module from
`core/src/client_common.rs`
- updated the remaining `codex-core` consumers to import `codex_tools`
directly
- adjusted the affected test code to reference
`codex_tools::ResponsesApiTool` directly as well

This is a mechanical cleanup only. It does not change tool behavior or
runtime logic.

Michael BolinandGitHub 258ba436f1 codex-tools: extract discoverable tool models (#16254)
## Why

`#16193` moved the pure `tool_search` and `tool_suggest` spec builders
into `codex-tools`, but `codex-core` still owned the shared
discoverable-tool model that those builders and the `tool_suggest`
runtime both depend on. This change continues the migration by moving
that reusable model boundary out of `codex-core` as well, so the
discovery/suggestion stack uses one shared set of types and
`core/src/tools` no longer needs its own `discoverable.rs` module.

## What changed

- Moved `DiscoverableTool`, `DiscoverablePluginInfo`, and
`filter_tool_suggest_discoverable_tools_for_client()` into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_discovery.rs` alongside the extracted
discovery/suggestion spec builders.
- Added `codex-app-server-protocol` as a `codex-tools` dependency so the
shared discoverable-tool model can own the connector-side `AppInfo`
variant directly.
- Updated `core/src/tools/handlers/tool_suggest.rs`,
`core/src/tools/spec.rs`, `core/src/tools/router.rs`,
`core/src/connectors.rs`, and `core/src/codex.rs` to consume the shared
`codex-tools` model instead of the old core-local declarations.
- Changed `core/src/plugins/discoverable.rs` to return
`DiscoverablePluginInfo` directly, moved the pure client-filter coverage
into `tool_discovery_tests.rs`, and deleted the old
`core/src/tools/discoverable.rs` module.
- Updated `codex-rs/tools/README.md` so the crate boundary documents
that `codex-tools` now owns the discoverable-tool models in addition to
the discovery/suggestion spec builders.

## Test plan

Michael BolinandGitHub 4e27a87ec6 codex-tools: extract configured tool specs (#16129)
## Why

This continues the `codex-tools` migration by moving another passive
tool-spec layer out of `codex-core`.

After `ToolSpec` moved into `codex-tools`, `codex-core` still owned
`ConfiguredToolSpec` and `create_tools_json_for_responses_api()`. Both
are data-model and serialization helpers rather than runtime
orchestration, so keeping them in `core/src/tools/registry.rs` and
`core/src/tools/spec.rs` left passive tool-definition code coupled to
`codex-core` longer than necessary.

## What changed

- moved `ConfiguredToolSpec` into `codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec.rs`
- moved `create_tools_json_for_responses_api()` into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec.rs`
- re-exported the new surface from `codex-rs/tools/src/lib.rs`, which
remains exports-only
- updated `core/src/client.rs`, `core/src/tools/registry.rs`, and
`core/src/tools/router.rs` to consume the extracted types and serializer
from `codex-tools`
- moved the tool-list serialization test into
`codex-rs/tools/src/tool_spec_tests.rs`
- added focused unit coverage for `ConfiguredToolSpec::name()`
- simplified `core/src/tools/spec_tests.rs` to use the extracted
`ConfiguredToolSpec::name()` directly and removed the now-redundant
local `tool_name()` helper
- updated `codex-rs/tools/README.md` so the crate boundary reflects the
newly extracted tool-spec wrapper and serialization helper

## Test plan

e4eedd6170 Code mode on v8 (#15276)
Moves Code Mode to a new crate with no dependencies on codex. This
create encodes the code mode semantics that we want for lifetime,
mounting, tool calling.

The model-facing surface is mostly unchanged. `exec` still runs raw
JavaScript, `wait` still resumes or terminates a `cell_id`, nested tools
are still available through `tools.*`, and helpers like `text`, `image`,
`store`, `load`, `notify`, `yield_control`, and `exit` still exist.

The major change is underneath that surface:

- Old code mode was an external Node runtime.
- New code mode is an in-process V8 runtime embedded directly in Rust.
- Old code mode managed cells inside a long-lived Node runner process.
- New code mode manages cells in Rust, with one V8 runtime thread per
active `exec`.
- Old code mode used JSON protocol messages over child stdin/stdout plus
Node worker-thread messages.
- New code mode uses Rust channels and direct V8 callbacks/events.

This PR also fixes the two migration regressions that fell out of that
substrate change:

- `wait { terminate: true }` now waits for the V8 runtime to actually
stop before reporting termination.
- synchronous top-level `exit()` now succeeds again instead of surfacing
as a script error.

---

- `core/src/tools/code_mode/*` is now mostly an adapter layer for the
public `exec` / `wait` tools.
- `code-mode/src/service.rs` owns cell sessions and async control flow
in Rust.
- `code-mode/src/runtime/*.rs` owns the embedded V8 isolate and
JavaScript execution.
- each `exec` spawns a dedicated runtime thread plus a Rust
session-control task.
- helper globals are installed directly into the V8 context instead of
being injected through a source prelude.
- helper modules like `tools.js` and `@openai/code_mode` are synthesized
through V8 module resolution callbacks in Rust.

---

Also added a benchmark for showing the speed of init and use of a code
mode env:
```
Michael BolinandGitHub 0c8a36676a fix: move inline codex-rs/core unit tests into sibling files (#14444)
## Why
PR #13783 moved the `codex.rs` unit tests into `codex_tests.rs`. This
applies the same extraction pattern across the rest of `codex-rs/core`
so the production modules stay focused on runtime code instead of large
inline test blocks.
Keeping the tests in sibling files also makes follow-up edits easier to
review because product changes no longer have to share a file with
hundreds or thousands of lines of test scaffolding.
## What changed
- replaced each inline `mod tests { ... }` in `codex-rs/core/src/**`
with a path-based module declaration
- moved each extracted unit test module into a sibling `*_tests.rs`
file, using `mod_tests.rs` for `mod.rs` modules
- preserved the existing `cfg(...)` guards and module-local structure so
the refactor remains structural rather than behavioral
## Testing
- `cargo test -p codex-core --lib` (`1653 passed; 0 failed; 5 ignored`)
- `just fix -p codex-core`
- `cargo fmt --check`
- `cargo shear`
Anton PanasenkoandGitHub 77b0c75267 feat: search_tool migrate to bring you own tool of Responses API (#14274)
## Why
to support a new bring your own search tool in Responses
API(https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/tools-tool-search#client-executed-tool-search)
we migrating our bm25 search tool to use official way to execute search
on client and communicate additional tools to the model.
## What
- replace the legacy `search_tool_bm25` flow with client-executed
`tool_search`
- add protocol, SSE, history, and normalization support for
`tool_search_call` and `tool_search_output`
- return namespaced Codex Apps search results and wire namespaced
follow-up tool calls back into MCP dispatch
Curtis 'Fjord' HawthorneandGitHub 7e980d7db6 Support multimodal custom tool outputs (#12948)
## Summary
This changes `custom_tool_call_output` to use the same output payload
shape as `function_call_output`, so freeform tools can return either
plain text or structured content items.
The main goal is to let `js_repl` return image content from nested
`view_image` calls in its own `custom_tool_call_output`, instead of
relying on a separate injected message.
## What changed
- Changed `custom_tool_call_output.output` from `string` to
`FunctionCallOutputPayload`
- Updated freeform tool plumbing to preserve structured output bodies
- Updated `js_repl` to aggregate nested tool content items and attach
them to the outer `js_repl` result
- Removed the old `js_repl` special case that injected `view_image`
results as a separate pending user image message
- Updated normalization/history/truncation paths to handle multimodal
`custom_tool_call_output`
- Regenerated app-server protocol schema artifacts
## Behavior
Direct `view_image` calls still return a `function_call_output` with
image content.
When `view_image` is called inside `js_repl`, the outer `js_repl`
`custom_tool_call_output` now carries:
- an `input_text` item if the JS produced text output
- one or more `input_image` items from nested tool results
So the nested image result now stays inside the `js_repl` tool output
instead of being injected as a separate message.
## Compatibility
This is intended to be backward-compatible for resumed conversations.
Older histories that stored `custom_tool_call_output.output` as a plain
string still deserialize correctly, and older histories that used the
previous injected-image-message flow also continue to resume.
Added regression coverage for resuming a pre-change rollout containing:
- string-valued `custom_tool_call_output`
- legacy injected image message history
Curtis 'Fjord' HawthorneandGitHub 125fbec317 Fix js_repl view_image attachments in nested tool calls (#12725)
## Summary
- Fix `js_repl` so `await codex.tool("view_image", { path })` actually
attaches the image to the active turn when called from inside the JS
REPL.
- Restore the behavior expected by the existing `js_repl`
image-attachment test.
- This is a follow-up to
[#12553](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/12553), which changed
`view_image` to return structured image content.
## Root Cause
- [#12553](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/12553) changed
`view_image` from directly injecting a pending user image message to
returning structured `function_call_output` content items.
- The nested tool-call bridge inside `js_repl` serialized that tool
response back to the JS runtime, but it did not mirror returned image
content into the active turn.
- As a result, `view_image` appeared to succeed inside `js_repl`, but no
`input_image` was actually attached for the outer turn.
## What Changed
- Updated the nested tool-call path in `js_repl` to inspect function
tool responses for structured content items.
- When a nested tool response includes `input_image` content, `js_repl`
now injects a corresponding user `Message` into the active turn before
returning the raw tool result back to the JS runtime.
- Kept the normal JSON result flow intact, so `codex.tool(...)` still
returns the original tool output object to JavaScript.
## Why
- `js_repl` documentation and tests already assume that `view_image` can
be used from inside the REPL to attach generated images to the model.
- Without this fix, the nested call path silently dropped that
attachment behavior.
daveaitel-openaiandGitHub dcab40123f Agent jobs (spawn_agents_on_csv) + progress UI (#10935)
## Summary
- Add agent job support: spawn a batch of sub-agents from CSV, auto-run,
auto-export, and store results in SQLite.
- Simplify workflow: remove run/resume/get-status/export tools; spawn is
deterministic and completes in one call.
- Improve exec UX: stable, single-line progress bar with ETA; suppress
sub-agent chatter in exec.
## Why
Enables map-reduce style workflows over arbitrarily large repos using
the existing Codex orchestrator. This addresses review feedback about
overly complex job controls and non-deterministic monitoring.
## Demo (progress bar)
```
./codex-rs/target/debug/codex exec \
  --enable collab \
  --enable sqlite \
  --full-auto \
  --progress-cursor \
  -c agents.max_threads=16 \
  -C /Users/daveaitel/code/codex \
  - <<'PROMPT'
Create /tmp/agent_job_progress_demo.csv with columns: path,area and 30 rows:
path = item-01..item-30, area = test.

Then call spawn_agents_on_csv with:
- csv_path: /tmp/agent_job_progress_demo.csv
- instruction: "Run `python - <<'PY'` to sleep a random 0.3–1.2s, then output JSON with keys: path, score (int). Set score = 1."
- output_csv_path: /tmp/agent_job_progress_demo_out.csv
PROMPT
```
## Review feedback addressed
- Auto-start jobs on spawn; removed run/resume/status/export tools.
- Auto-export on success.
- More descriptive tool spec + clearer prompts.
- Avoid deadlocks on spawn failure; pending/running handled safely.
- Progress bar no longer scrolls; stable single-line redraw.
## Tests
- `cd codex-rs && cargo test -p codex-exec`
- `cd codex-rs && cargo build -p codex-cli`
Dylan HurdandGitHub f6053fdfb3 feat(core) Introduce Feature::RequestPermissions (#11871)
## Summary
Introduces the initial implementation of Feature::RequestPermissions.
RequestPermissions allows the model to request that a command be run
inside the sandbox, with additional permissions, like writing to a
specific folder. Eventually this will include other rules as well, and
the ability to persist these permissions, but this PR is already quite
large - let's get the core flow working and go from there!
Anton PanasenkoandGitHub 38c442ca7f core: limit search_tool_bm25 to Apps and clarify discovery guidance (#11669)
## Summary
- Limit `search_tool_bm25` indexing to `codex_apps` tools only, so
non-Apps MCP servers are no longer discoverable through this search
path.
- Move search-tool discovery guidance into the `search_tool_bm25` tool
description (via template include) instead of injecting it as a separate
developer message.
- Update Apps discovery guidance wording to clarify when to use
`search_tool_bm25` for Apps-backed systems (for example Slack, Google
Drive, Jira, Notion) and when to call tools directly.
- Remove dead `core` helper code (`filter_codex_apps_mcp_tools` and
`codex_apps_connector_id`) that is no longer used after the
tool-selection refactor.
- Update `core` search-tool tests to assert codex-apps-only behavior and
to validate guidance from the tool description.
## Validation
-  `just fmt`
-  `cargo test -p codex-core search_tool`
- ⚠️ `cargo test -p codex-core` was attempted, but the run repeatedly
stalled on
`tools::js_repl::tests::js_repl_can_attach_image_via_view_image_tool`.
Owen LinandGitHub 5ea107a088 feat(app-server, core): allow text + image content items for dynamic tool outputs (#10567)
Took over the work that @aaronl-openai started here:
https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/10397
Now that app-server clients are able to set up custom tools (called
`dynamic_tools` in app-server), we should expose a way for clients to
pass in not just text, but also image outputs. This is something the
Responses API already supports for function call outputs, where you can
pass in either a string or an array of content outputs (text, image,
file):
https://platform.openai.com/docs/api-reference/responses/create#responses_create-input-input_item_list-item-function_tool_call_output-output-array-input_image
So let's just plumb it through in Codex (with the caveat that we only
support text and image for now). This is implemented end-to-end across
app-server v2 protocol types and core tool handling.
## Breaking API change
NOTE: This introduces a breaking change with dynamic tools, but I think
it's ok since this concept was only recently introduced
(https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/9539) and it's better to get the
API contract correct. I don't think there are any real consumers of this
yet (not even the Codex App).
Old shape:
`{ "output": "dynamic-ok", "success": true }`
New shape:
```
{
    "contentItems": [
      { "type": "inputText", "text": "dynamic-ok" },
      { "type": "inputImage", "imageUrl": "data:image/png;base64,AAA" }
    ]
  "success": true
}
```
