Felipe CouryandGitHub c0ea566bb5 feat(tui): restore output-free cancelled prompts (#25316)
## TL;DR

When you press Esc or Ctrl+C after sending a prompt but before any
output was rendering, it restores the last composer and the message.

## Summary

Cancelling a prompt immediately after submission should behave like
returning to edit that prompt, not like discarding the user's draft.
Today, pressing `Esc` or `Ctrl+C` before Codex responds leaves the
submitted prompt in the transcript and returns an empty composer,
forcing the user to recall or retype it.

When an interrupted turn has not produced substantive visible output,
restore its submitted prompt directly into the composer and roll back
that latest turn. This also covers the first prompt in a fresh thread,
before the TUI has retained a local user-history cell. The restored
draft keeps its text, image attachments, and active collaboration mode
so it can be edited and resubmitted in place.

Restoration is intentionally suppressed once the turn has produced
user-visible activity such as assistant output, tool work, hooks, or
patches. A transient thinking status does not make the prompt
ineligible. Rollback also rebuilds terminal scrollback from the retained
transcript cells so repeated cancellations and terminal resizes do not
duplicate history.

## How to Test

1. Start the TUI with `cargo run -p codex-cli --bin codex`.
2. In a fresh thread, submit the first prompt and press `Esc` before
Codex emits substantive output. Confirm that the prompt returns to the
composer for editing and its submitted transcript row is removed.
3. Repeat with `Ctrl+C`, then repeat after at least one completed turn.
Confirm the same behavior.
4. Submit a prompt, wait for assistant output or tool activity, then
cancel. Confirm that the transcript remains intact and the prompt is not
restored into the composer.
5. Cancel several output-free prompts and resize the terminal between
attempts. Confirm that the startup banner, tip, and transcript history
do not duplicate in scrollback.

Felipe CouryandGitHub 2d1ad374a7 feat(tui): make turn interruption keybind configurable (#24766)
## Why

Interrupting an active turn is currently fixed to `Esc`, which is easy
to hit accidentally and cannot be customized through `/keymap`. This
gives users a less accidental binding while preserving the existing
default.

## What Changed

- Adds `tui.keymap.chat.interrupt_turn` to `/keymap`, defaulting to
`esc` and supporting remapping or unbinding.
- Uses the configured interrupt binding for running-turn status, queued
steer interruption, and `request_user_input`, including the visible
hints.
- Preserves local `Esc` behavior for popups, Vim insert mode, and
`/agent` editing while validating conflicts with fixed/backtrack and
request-input navigation bindings.
- Adds behavior and snapshot coverage for remapped interruption paths.

## How to Test

1. Run Codex and open `/keymap`, then set **Interrupt Turn** to `f12`.
2. Start a turn and confirm `Esc` no longer interrupts it while `f12`
does; the running hint should display `f12 to interrupt`.
3. Queue a steer while a turn is running and confirm the preview
displays `f12`; pressing it should interrupt and submit the steer
immediately.
4. Trigger a `request_user_input` prompt and confirm its footer uses
`f12`; with notes open, `Esc` should still clear notes while `f12`
interrupts the turn.
5. Clear the Interrupt Turn binding and confirm the key-specific
interrupt hint is removed while `Ctrl+C` remains available.

Eric TrautandGitHub 227bee0445 Enforce animations = false for screen readers (#20564)
## Why

Issue #20489 calls out that animated TUI affordances can be noisy for
screen-reader users. Codex already has `tui.animations = false` as a
reduced-motion setting, but some live activity rows render spinner-style
prefixes in that mode. These were relatively recent regressions.

We have also regressed this pattern more than once by adding new
spinner/shimmer callsites that do not think through the reduced-motion
path, so this PR adds a small guardrail while fixing the current
surfaces.

## What changed

- Omit the live status-row spinner when animations are disabled, so the
row starts with stable text like `Working (...)`.
- Render running hook headers without the spinner prefix when animations
are disabled, while preserving shimmer/spinner behavior when animations
are enabled.
- Centralize TUI activity indicators in `tui/src/motion.rs`, with
explicit reduced-motion choices for hidden prefixes, static bullets, and
plain shimmer-text fallbacks.
- Route existing spinner/shimmer callsites through the central motion
helper, including exec rows, MCP/web-search/loading rows, hook rows,
plugin loading, and onboarding loading text.
- Add a source-scan regression test that rejects direct `spinner(...)`
or `shimmer_spans(...)` usage outside the central module and primitive
definition.
- Add focused coverage that reduced-motion active exec rows are stable,
status rows start without a spinner, running hooks omit the spinner, and
MCP inventory loading stays stable.
- Update the one affected status-indicator snapshot; the existing detail
tree prefix remains unchanged.

## Verification

Eric TrautandGitHub f2bc2f26a9 Remove core protocol dependency [2/2] (#20325)
## Why

With the local model layer and app-server routing in place from PR1,
this PR moves the active TUI runtime onto app-server notifications. The
affected pieces share the same event flow, so the command surface,
session state, bottom-pane prompts, chat rendering, history/status
views, and tests move together to keep the stacked branch buildable.

This PR also removes the obsolete compatibility surface that is no
longer used after the migration. The proposed protocol-boundary verifier
layer was dropped from the stack; enforcing that final boundary will be
simpler once `codex-tui` no longer needs any `codex_protocol`
references.

This PR is part 2 of a 2-PR stack:

1. Add TUI-owned replacement models and extract app-server event
routing.
2. Move the active TUI flow to app-server notifications and delete
obsolete adapter code.

## What changed

- Rewired app command and session handling to use app-server request and
notification shapes.
- Moved approval overlays, request-user-input flows, MCP elicitation,
realtime events, and review commands onto the app-server-facing model
surface.
- Updated chat rendering, history cells, status views, multi-agent UI,
replay state, and TUI tests to use app-server notifications plus the
local models introduced in PR1.
- Deleted `codex-rs/tui/src/app/app_server_adapter.rs` and the
superseded `chatwidget/tests/background_events.rs` fixture path.

## Verification

- `cargo check -p codex-tui --tests`
- Top of stack: `cargo test -p codex-tui`

Eric TrautandGitHub 61429a6c10 Rename tui_app_server to tui (#16104)
This is a follow-up to https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/15922. That
previous PR deleted the old `tui` directory and left the new
`tui_app_server` directory in place. This PR renames `tui_app_server` to
`tui` and fixes up all references.

Eric TrautandGitHub d65deec617 Remove the legacy TUI split (#15922)
This is the part 1 of 2 PRs that will delete the `tui` /
`tui_app_server` split. This part simply deletes the existing `tui`
directory and marks the `tui_app_server` feature flag as removed. I left
the `tui_app_server` feature flag in place for now so its presence
doesn't result in an error. It is simply ignored.

Part 2 will rename the `tui_app_server` directory `tui`. I did this as
two parts to reduce visible code churn.

Michael BolinandGitHub fa2a2f0be9 Use released DotSlash package for argument-comment lint (#15199)
## Why
The argument-comment lint now has a packaged DotSlash artifact from
[#15198](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/15198), so the normal repo
lint path should use that released payload instead of rebuilding the
lint from source every time.

That keeps `just clippy` and CI aligned with the shipped artifact while
preserving a separate source-build path for people actively hacking on
the lint crate.

The current alpha package also exposed two integration wrinkles that the
repo-side prebuilt wrapper needs to smooth over:
- the bundled Dylint library filename includes the host triple, for
example `@nightly-2025-09-18-aarch64-apple-darwin`, and Dylint derives
`RUSTUP_TOOLCHAIN` from that filename
- on Windows, Dylint's driver path also expects `RUSTUP_HOME` to be
present in the environment

Without those adjustments, the prebuilt CI jobs fail during `cargo
metadata` or driver setup. This change makes the checked-in prebuilt
wrapper normalize the packaged library name to the plain
`nightly-2025-09-18` channel before invoking `cargo-dylint`, and it
teaches both the wrapper and the packaged runner source to infer
`RUSTUP_HOME` from `rustup show home` when the environment does not
already provide it.

After the prebuilt Windows lint job started running successfully, it
also surfaced a handful of existing anonymous literal callsites in
`windows-sandbox-rs`. This PR now annotates those callsites so the new
cross-platform lint job is green on the current tree.

## What Changed
- checked in the current
`tools/argument-comment-lint/argument-comment-lint` DotSlash manifest
- kept `tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh` as the source-build wrapper
for lint development
- added `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` as the
normal enforcement path, using the checked-in DotSlash package and
bundled `cargo-dylint`
- updated `just clippy` and `just argument-comment-lint` to use the
prebuilt wrapper
- split `.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml` so source-package checks live in
a dedicated `argument_comment_lint_package` job, while the released lint
runs in an `argument_comment_lint_prebuilt` matrix on Linux, macOS, and
Windows
- kept the pinned `nightly-2025-09-18` toolchain install in the prebuilt
CI matrix, since the prebuilt package still relies on rustup-provided
toolchain components
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` to
normalize host-qualified nightly library filenames, keep the `rustup`
shim directory ahead of direct toolchain `cargo` binaries, and export
`RUSTUP_HOME` when needed for Windows Dylint driver setup
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/src/bin/argument-comment-lint.rs`
so future published DotSlash artifacts apply the same nightly-filename
normalization and `RUSTUP_HOME` inference internally
- fixed the remaining Windows lint violations in
`codex-rs/windows-sandbox-rs` by adding the required `/*param*/`
comments at the reported callsites
- documented the checked-in DotSlash file, wrapper split, archive
layout, nightly prerequisite, and Windows `RUSTUP_HOME` requirement in
`tools/argument-comment-lint/README.md`

Michael BolinandGitHub b77fe8fefe Apply argument comment lint across codex-rs (#14652)
## Why

Once the repo-local lint exists, `codex-rs` needs to follow the
checked-in convention and CI needs to keep it from drifting. This commit
applies the fallback `/*param*/` style consistently across existing
positional literal call sites without changing those APIs.

The longer-term preference is still to avoid APIs that require comments
by choosing clearer parameter types and call shapes. This PR is
intentionally the mechanical follow-through for the places where the
existing signatures stay in place.

After rebasing onto newer `main`, the rollout also had to cover newly
introduced `tui_app_server` call sites. That made it clear the first cut
of the CI job was too expensive for the common path: it was spending
almost as much time installing `cargo-dylint` and re-testing the lint
crate as a representative test job spends running product tests. The CI
update keeps the full workspace enforcement but trims that extra
overhead from ordinary `codex-rs` PRs.

## What changed

- keep a dedicated `argument_comment_lint` job in `rust-ci`
- mechanically annotate remaining opaque positional literals across
`codex-rs` with exact `/*param*/` comments, including the rebased
`tui_app_server` call sites that now fall under the lint
- keep the checked-in style aligned with the lint policy by using
`/*param*/` and leaving string and char literals uncommented
- cache `cargo-dylint`, `dylint-link`, and the relevant Cargo
registry/git metadata in the lint job
- split changed-path detection so the lint crate's own `cargo test` step
runs only when `tools/argument-comment-lint/*` or `rust-ci.yml` changes
- continue to run the repo wrapper over the `codex-rs` workspace, so
product-code enforcement is unchanged

Most of the code changes in this commit are intentionally mechanical
comment rewrites or insertions driven by the lint itself.

## Verification

- `./tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh --workspace`
- `cargo test -p codex-tui-app-server -p codex-tui`
- parsed `.github/workflows/rust-ci.yml` locally with PyYAML

Michael BolinandGitHub 1af2a37ada chore: remove codex-core public protocol/shell re-exports (#12432)
## Why

`codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` re-exported a broad set of types and modules
from `codex-protocol` and `codex-shell-command`. That made it easy for
workspace crates to import those APIs through `codex-core`, which in
turn hides dependency edges and makes it harder to reduce compile-time
coupling over time.

This change removes those public re-exports so call sites must import
from the source crates directly. Even when a crate still depends on
`codex-core` today, this makes dependency boundaries explicit and
unblocks future work to drop `codex-core` dependencies where possible.

## What Changed

- Removed public re-exports from `codex-rs/core/src/lib.rs` for:
- `codex_protocol::protocol` and related protocol/model types (including
`InitialHistory`)
  - `codex_protocol::config_types` (`protocol_config_types`)
- `codex_shell_command::{bash, is_dangerous_command, is_safe_command,
parse_command, powershell}`
- Migrated workspace Rust call sites to import directly from:
  - `codex_protocol::protocol`
  - `codex_protocol::config_types`
  - `codex_protocol::models`
  - `codex_shell_command`
- Added explicit `Cargo.toml` dependencies (`codex-protocol` /
`codex-shell-command`) in crates that now import those crates directly.
- Kept `codex-core` internal modules compiling by using `pub(crate)`
aliases in `core/src/lib.rs` (internal-only, not part of the public
API).
- Updated the two utility crates that can already drop a `codex-core`
dependency edge entirely:
  - `codex-utils-approval-presets`
  - `codex-utils-cli`

## Verification

2bdf9617bb fix(tui): keep unified exec summary on working line (#10962)
## Problem
When unified-exec background sessions appear while the status indicator
is visible, the bottom pane can grow by one row to show a dedicated
footer line. That row insertion/removal makes the composer jump
vertically and produces visible jitter/flicker during streaming turns.

## Mental model
The bottom pane should expose one canonical background-exec summary
string, but it should surface that string in only one place at a time:
- if the status indicator row is visible, show the summary inline on
that row;
- if the status indicator row is hidden, show the summary as the
standalone unified-exec footer row.

This keeps status information visible while preserving a stable pane
height.

## Non-goals
This change does not alter unified-exec lifecycle, process tracking, or
`/ps` behavior. It does not redesign status text copy, spinner timing,
or interrupt handling semantics.

## Tradeoffs
Inlining the summary preserves layout stability and keeps interrupt
affordances in a fixed location, but it reduces horizontal space for
long status/detail text in narrow terminals. We accept that truncation
risk in exchange for removing vertical jitter and keeping the composer
anchored.

## Architecture
`UnifiedExecFooter` remains the source of truth for background-process
summary copy via `summary_text()`. `BottomPane` mirrors that text into
`StatusIndicatorWidget::update_inline_message()` whenever process state
changes or a status widget is created. Rendering enforces single-surface
output: the standalone footer row is skipped while status is present,
and the status row appends the summary after the elapsed/interrupt
segment.

## Documentation pass
Added non-functional docs/comments that make the new invariant explicit:
- status row owns inline summary when present;
- unified-exec footer row renders only when status row is absent;
- summary ordering keeps elapsed/interrupt affordance in a stable
position.

## Observability
No new telemetry or logs are introduced. The behavior is traceable
through:
- `BottomPane::set_unified_exec_processes()` for state updates,
- `BottomPane::sync_status_inline_message()` for status-row
synchronization,
- `StatusIndicatorWidget::render()` for final inline ordering.

## Tests
- Added
`bottom_pane::tests::unified_exec_summary_does_not_increase_height_when_status_visible`
to lock the no-height-growth invariant.
- Updated the unified-exec status restoration snapshot to match inline
rendering order.
- Validated with:
  - `just fmt`
  - `cargo test -p codex-tui --lib`

Eric TrautandGitHub d909048a85 Added feature switch to disable animations in TUI (#6870)
This PR adds support for a new feature flag `tui.animations`. By
default, the TUI uses animations in its welcome screen, "working"
spinners, and "shimmer" effects. This animations can interfere with
screen readers, so it's good to provide a way to disable them.

This change is inspired by [a
PR](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/4014) contributed by @Orinks.
That PR has faltered a bit, but I think the core idea is sound. This
version incorporates feedback from @aibrahim-oai. In particular:
1. It uses a feature flag (`tui.animations`) rather than the unqualified
CLI key `no-animations`. Feature flags are the preferred way to expose
boolean switches. They are also exposed via CLI command switches.
2. It includes more complete documentation.
3. It disables a few animations that the other PR omitted.

Enrique Moreno TentandGitHub 6cfc012e9d feat(tui): show minutes/hours in thinking timer (#3220)
What

- Show compact elapsed time in the TUI status indicator: Xs, MmSSs,
HhMMmSSs.
  - Add private helper fmt_elapsed_compact with a unit test.

  Why

- Seconds‑only becomes hard to read during longer runs; minutes/hours
improve clarity without extra noise.

  How

  - Implemented in codex-rs/tui/src/status_indicator_widget.rs only.
- The helper is used when rendering the existing “Working/Thinking”
timer.
- No changes to codex-common::elapsed::format_duration or other crates.

  Scope/Impact

  - TUI‑only; no public API changes; minimal risk.
  - Snapshot tests should remain unchanged (most show “0s”).

  Before/After

- Working (65s • Esc to interrupt) → Working (1m05s • Esc to interrupt)
  - Working (3723s • …) → Working (1h02m03s • …)

  Tests

  - Unit: fmt_elapsed_compact_formats_seconds_minutes_hours.
- Local checks: cargo fmt --all, cargo clippy -p codex-tui -- -D
warnings, cargo test -p codex-tui.

  Notes

- Open to adjusting the exact format or moving the helper if maintainers
prefer a shared location.

i'm not yet convinced i have the best heuristics for what to highlight,
but this feels like a useful step towards something a bit easier to
read, esp. when the model is producing large commands.

Jeremy RoseandGitHub bbf42f4e12 improve performance of 'cargo test -p codex-tui' (#2593)

```
$ time cargo test -p codex-tui -q
[...]
cargo test -p codex-tui -q  39.89s user 10.77s system 98% cpu 51.328 total
after:
```
$ time cargo test -p codex-tui -q
[...]
cargo test -p codex-tui -q  1.37s user 0.64s system 29% cpu 6.699 total
```
the major offenders were the textarea fuzz test and the custom_terminal
doctests. (i think the doctests were being recompiled every time which
made them extra slow?)
this is in preparation for adding more separate "modes" to the tui, in
particular, a "transcript mode" to view a full history once #2316 lands.
1. split apart "tui events" from "app events".
2. remove onboarding-related events from AppEvent.
3. move several general drawing tools out of App and into a new Tui
