  • feat: use run agent task auth for inference (#19051)
    ## Stack

    This is PR 3 of the simplified HAI single-run-task stack:

    - [#19047](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19047) Agent Identity
    assertion and task-registration primitives, including the shared
    run-task helper used by existing Agent Identity JWT auth.
    - [#19049](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19049)
    Disabled-by-default ChatGPT auth opt-in that provisions/reuses persisted
    Agent Identity runtime auth and its single run task.
    - [#19051](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19051) Run-scoped
    provider auth that uses one backend-owned task id for first-party
    inference and compaction requests.

    [#19054](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/19054) collapsed out of
    the active stack because the simplified design no longer needs a
    separate background/control-plane task helper.

    ## Summary

    This PR moves Agent Identity usage into provider auth resolution. That
    keeps `AgentAssertion` auth tied to first-party OpenAI provider requests
    instead of applying a late session-wide override that could affect
    local, custom, Bedrock, API-key, or external-bearer providers.

    What changed:

    - adds a small `ProviderAuthScope` struct carrying the run auth policy
    and session source needed by provider-scoped auth resolution
    - lets `Session` opt the existing `ModelClient` into `ChatGptAuth`
    policy when `use_agent_identity` is enabled, without adding a second
    model-client constructor
    - resolves Agent Identity only for first-party OpenAI provider auth
    paths
    - uses the persisted run task id from the `AgentIdentityAuth` record to
    build `AgentAssertion` auth for Responses requests
    - routes shared request setup through scoped provider auth so unary
    compact requests use the same run-task assertion path as inference turns
    - keeps local/custom/Bedrock/env-key/external-bearer provider auth
    unchanged
    - lets missing run-task state surface through the existing model-request
    error path instead of silently falling back to bearer auth

    This PR intentionally does not create thread-scoped, target-scoped, or
    background-scoped task identities. The run task is the only task Codex
    registers in this POC shape.

  • core: rename metadata -> internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough (#28968)
    ## Description
    This PR cuts Codex over from generic `ResponseItem.metadata` (introduced
    here: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28355) to
    `ResponseItem.internal_chat_message_metadata_passthrough`, which is the
    blessed path and has strongly-typed keys.

    For now we have to drop this MAv2 usage of `metadata`:
    https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28561 until we figure out where
    that should live.
  • Always use AVAS for realtime WebRTC calls (#28856)
    ## Summary

    - Remove the realtime `architecture` selector from core protocol,
    app-server protocol, config parsing, generated schemas, and callers.
    - Always create WebRTC realtime calls with the AVAS query params:
    `intent=quicksilver&architecture=avas`.
    - Keep direct websocket realtime behavior on the existing config/default
    path, while WebRTC starts without an explicit version now default to
    realtime v1 because AVAS requires v1.

    ## Notes

    - WebRTC realtime now means AVAS. If a caller explicitly asks to start
    WebRTC with realtime v2, Codex rejects that request because the AVAS
    WebRTC path only supports realtime v1. Websocket realtime is separate
    and can still use realtime v2.
    - The old `[realtime] architecture = "realtimeapi" | "avas"` config knob
    is removed. Local configs that still set it will need to delete that
    line.
    - Some app-server tests that were only trying to exercise realtime v2
    protocol behavior now use websocket transport, because WebRTC is
    intentionally locked to AVAS/v1. Separate WebRTC tests cover the AVAS
    query params, v1 startup, SDP flow, and sideband join.

    ## Validation

    - Merged fresh `origin/main` at `83e6a786a2`.
    - `just fmt`
    - `just write-config-schema`
    - `just write-app-server-schema`
    - `git diff --check`
    - `just test -p codex-api -p codex-core -p codex-app-server-protocol -p

    - `just test -p codex-protocol -p codex-config` (413 passed)
  • [codex] control automatic realtime handoff delivery (#27986)
    ## What

    Built on the realtime speech-control plumbing merged in #27917.

    - Add optional `codexResponseHandoffPrefix` to `thread/realtime/start`.
    - Apply that prefix only to automatic V1 commentary sent through
    `conversation.handoff.append`; final answers remain unprefixed.
    - Add opt-in `clientManagedHandoffs`. When true, core suppresses
    automatic response handoffs and completion output so delivery is
    controlled by explicit client append APIs.
    - Preserve existing automatic behavior by default.
    `codexResponsesAsItems: true` continues to select item routing when
    client-managed mode is disabled.

    ## Why

    Voice clients need two delivery policies: automatic background context
    with silent commentary instructions and fully client-owned handoffs.
    Phase-aware prefixing keeps routine commentary silent without
    suppressing the final answer, while client-managed mode lets an app
    decide exactly which updates to append.

    ## Validation

    - `just fmt`
    - `cargo test -p codex-app-server-protocol
    serialize_thread_realtime_start`
    - `RUST_MIN_STACK=16777216 cargo test -p codex-core --test all
    conversation_handoff_persists_across_item_done_until_turn_complete`
    - `RUST_MIN_STACK=16777216 cargo test -p codex-app-server --test all
    webrtc_v1_client_managed_handoffs_disable_automatic_output`
    - `RUST_MIN_STACK=16777216 cargo test -p codex-app-server --test all
    webrtc_v1_final_automatic_handoff_omits_silent_prefix`
    - `cargo build -p codex-cli --bin codex`
    - Local Codex Apps compatibility check: 43 focused webview tests passed,
    and a live voice session routed through the source-built app-server.

    The explicit `RUST_MIN_STACK` avoids a macOS Tokio test-worker stack
    overflow seen with the default test environment.
  • [codex] Add optional IDs to response items (#28812)
    ## Why

    `ResponseItem` variants do not have a consistent internal ID shape: some
    variants carry required IDs, some carry optional IDs, and some cannot
    represent an ID at all. The existing fields also use inconsistent serde,
    TypeScript, and JSON-schema annotations. A single enum-level access path
    is needed before history recording can assign and retain IDs.

    This PR establishes that internal model only. It intentionally does not
    generate or serialize IDs; allocation and wire persistence are isolated
    in the stacked follow-up.

    ## What changed

    - Give every concrete `ResponseItem` variant an `Option<String>` ID
    field.
    - Apply the same internal-only annotations to every ID field:
    `#[serde(default, skip_serializing)]`, `#[ts(skip)]`, and
    `#[schemars(skip)]`.
    - Add `ResponseItem::id()` and `ResponseItem::set_id()` as the shared
    accessors.
    - Preserve IDs when history items are rewritten for truncation.
    - Adapt consumers that previously assumed reasoning and image-generation
    IDs were required.
    - Regenerate app-server schemas so the hidden fields are represented
    consistently.

    The serde catch-all `ResponseItem::Other` remains ID-less because it
    must remain a unit variant.

    ## Test plan

    -p codex-image-generation-extension`

  • [codex] Use expect in integration tests (#28441)
    The workspace denies `clippy::expect_used` in production. Although
    `clippy.toml` allows `expect` in tests, Bazel Clippy compiles
    integration-test helper code in a way that does not receive that
    exemption, which encouraged verbose `unwrap_or_else(... panic!(...))`
    and equivalent `match`/`let else` forms.

    This allows `clippy::expect_used` once at each integration-test crate
    root (including aggregated suites and test-support libraries), then
    replaces manual panic-based Result and Option unwraps with
    `expect`/`expect_err`. Standalone `tests/*.rs` files remain their own
    crate roots. Intentional assertion and unexpected-variant panics remain
    unchanged, and the production `expect_used = "deny"` lint remains in
    place.

    The cleanup is mechanical and net-negative in line count.
  • Add a toggle for realtime startup context (#28405)
    ## Summary
    - Add `includeStartupContext` to realtime start requests so callers can
    explicitly skip Codex startup context while keeping the backend prompt
    - Thread the new flag through protocol types, request processing, and
    realtime session config
    - Update app-server docs and coverage for the new default and opt-out
    behavior

    ## Testing
    - Added protocol serialization coverage for `includeStartupContext`
    - Added realtime integration coverage for starting a session with
    startup context disabled
  • Add realtime speech append control (#27917)
    ## Why

    Realtime voice harness tuning needs app-side control over what backend
    Codex text is spoken. Backend orchestrator text is written for a reading
    UI, so automatically speaking every preamble, progress update, or final
    assistant message can make the realtime voice model too chatty.

    For experimentation, clients need two simple controls: keep app/client
    text-item injection on the existing item-create path, and add an
    explicit speakable path that app code can call only when it wants
    realtime to speak. Automatic Codex output also needs an opt-in way to
    switch from the protocol's default speakable path to regular realtime
    items, with a caller-provided prefix so prompt wording can be tuned
    outside core.

    The default remains unchanged: if a client omits the new start fields
    and never calls `appendSpeech`, automatic backend output continues down
    the existing speakable path for the selected realtime protocol.

    ## What Changed

    - Adds experimental `thread/realtime/appendSpeech` for app-provided
    speakable text.
    - Keeps existing `thread/realtime/appendText` as the item-create API for
    app-provided realtime text items.
    - Adds `codexResponsesAsItems` / `codex_responses_as_items` on
    `thread/realtime/start` to send automatic Codex responses with
    `conversation.item.create` instead of the protocol's default speakable
    output path.
    - Adds `codexResponseItemPrefix` / `codex_response_item_prefix` so
    clients can prepend experiment instructions to those automatic Codex
    response items.
    - Keeps literal `conversation.handoff.append` routing scoped to the v1
    speakable path; v2 default speech uses its item/function-output plus
    `response.create` behavior.
    - Removes the earlier public silent-context API and hardcoded
    silent-context prefix.
    - Updates realtime tests to cover default automatic speakable behavior,
    opt-in automatic item-create behavior, and explicit `appendSpeech`
    behavior.

  • feat(core): add metadata field to ResponseItem (#28355)
    ## Description

    This PR adds an optional `metadata` field to `ResponseItem` for
    Responses API calls. Only mechanical plumbing, no actual values
    populated and sent yet. Turns out just adding a new field to
    `ResponseItem` has quite a large blast radius already.

    This change is backwards compatible because `metadata` is optional and
    omitted when absent, so existing response items and rollout history
    without it still deserialize and requests that do not set it keep the
    same wire shape. For provider compatibility, we strip out `metadata`
    before non-OpenAI Responses requests so Azure and AWS Bedrock never see
    this field.

    My followup PR here will actually make use of it to start storing and
    passing along `turn_id`: https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/28360

    ## What changed

    - Added `ResponseItemMetadata` with optional `turn_id`, plus optional
    `metadata` on Responses API item variants and inter-agent communication.
    - Preserved item metadata through response-item rewrites such as
    truncation, missing tool-output synthesis, compaction history
    rebuilding, visible-history conversion, rollout/resume, and generated
    app-server schemas/types.
    - Strip item metadata from non-OpenAI Responses requests while
    preserving it for OpenAI-shaped requests.
    - Updated the mechanical fixture/test construction churn required by the
    new optional field.
  • Represent dynamic tools with explicit namespaces internally (#27365)
    Follow-up to #27356.

    ## Stack note

    This PR changes Codex's internal dynamic-tool shape while leaving
    `thread/start` unchanged. App-server therefore converts the existing
    per-tool input into explicit functions and namespaces before passing it
    to core.

    [#27371](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/27371) updates
    `thread/start` to use the same explicit shape and removes this temporary
    conversion.

    ## Why

    Dynamic tools repeat namespace metadata on every function. Core should
    keep one explicit namespace with its member tools so descriptions and
    membership stay consistent across sessions and runtime planning.

    ## What changed

    - Represent dynamic tools as top-level functions or explicit namespaces
    in protocol and session state.
    - Read old flat rollout metadata and write the canonical hierarchy.
    - Flatten namespace members only when registering callable tools.
    - Keep `thread/start.dynamicTools` flat for now and normalize it at the
    app-server boundary.

    New builds can read old rollout metadata. Older builds cannot read newly
    written hierarchical metadata.

  • [codex] Send turn state through compact requests (#28002)
    ## Context

    Inline compaction is part of the active logical turn. Compact requests
    and the sampling requests around them should use the same turn state,
    including when compaction is the first request to establish it.

    ## Change

    Pass the turn-scoped `OnceLock` directly to inline v1 compaction so
    `/responses/compact` includes an established value in the existing HTTP
    header. Capture `x-codex-turn-state` from the compact response into that
    same lock, allowing pre-turn compact to establish the value that
    subsequent sampling reuses.

    V2 compact already uses the normal Responses HTTP/WebSocket path and
    continues to share the same `OnceLock` without separate plumbing. The
    first returned value wins for the logical turn.

    ## Test plan

    Integration coverage verifies that:

    - pre-turn v1 compact can establish state for the first sampling request
    - inline v1 compact receives established state over HTTP
    - inline v2 compact reuses established state over HTTP
    - inline v2 compact reuses established state over WebSocket

    CI validates the full change.
  • realtime: add AVAS architecture override (#27720)
    ## Summary

    Adds a `RealtimeConversationArchitecture` option for realtime
    conversation startup, with `realtimeapi` as the default and `avas` as an
    opt-in architecture.

    The AVAS path is limited to realtime v1 conversational WebRTC starts,
    and WebRTC call creation appends `intent=quicksilver&architecture=avas`
    to `/v1/realtime/calls`. The existing sideband websocket still joins by
    `call_id`.

    This also exposes the per-session architecture override through
    app-server v2 `thread/realtime/start` params and updates the config
    schema for `[realtime].architecture`.

  • core: Consolidate Responses API Codex metadata (#27122)
    ## What
    Introduce a `CodexResponsesMetadata` struct that defines all the core
    metadata we send to Responses API. Example fields are `thread_id`,
    `turn_id`, `window_id`, etc.

    Going forward, `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]` will be the
    canonical way Codex sends metadata to Responses API across both HTTP and
    websocket transports.

    For now, we continue to emit the existing top-level HTTP headers and
    top-level `client_metadata` fields from the same
    `CodexResponsesMetadata` struct for compatibility reasons.

    Also, app-server clients who specify additional
    `responsesapi_client_metadata` via `turn/start` and `turn/steer` will
    have those fields merged into
    `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`, but cannot override the
    reserved fields that core uses (i.e. the fields in
    `CodexResponsesMetadata`).

    ## Why

    Responses API request instrumentation is the source of truth for
    downstream Codex analytics that join requests by Codex IDs such as
    session, thread, turn, and context window. Before this change, those
    values were assembled through several request-specific paths: HTTP
    request bodies, websocket handshake headers, websocket `response.create`
    payloads, compaction requests, and the rich `x-codex-turn-metadata`
    envelope all had their own wiring.

    That made metadata propagation easy to drift across API-key/direct
    Responses API requests, ChatGPT-auth/proxied requests, websocket
    requests, and compaction requests. It also made additions like
    `window_id` error-prone because a field could be added to one transport
    projection but missed in another.

    ## What changed

    - Added `CodexResponsesMetadata` as the core-owned snapshot for Codex
    metadata sent to ResponsesAPI.
    - Render `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`, flat
    `client_metadata` projections, and direct compatibility headers from
    that same snapshot.
    - Include the known Codex-owned fields in the turn metadata blob,
    including installation/session/thread/turn/window IDs, request kind,
    lineage, sandbox/workspace metadata, timing, and compaction details.
    - Treat app-server `responsesapi_client_metadata` as enrichment for the
    Codex turn metadata blob while preventing those extras from overriding
    Codex-owned fields.
    - Use the same metadata path for normal turns, websocket prewarm, local
    compaction, remote v1 compaction, and remote v2 compaction.
    - Keep websocket connection-only preconnect metadata separate so
    handshakes carry compatibility identity headers without inventing a fake
    turn metadata blob.

    ## Verification

    - `cargo check -p codex-core`
    - `just fix -p codex-core`
  • core: enable remote compaction v2 by default (#27573)
    ## Why

    Remote compaction v2 is ready to become the default for providers that
    already support remote compaction. Leaving it behind an
    under-development opt-in keeps eligible sessions on the legacy
    remote-compaction path.

    This does not broaden provider eligibility: OpenAI and Azure move to v2,
    while Bedrock and OSS providers retain their existing local-compaction
    behavior.

    ## What changed

    - Mark `remote_compaction_v2` stable and enable it by default.
    - Make tests that intentionally cover legacy remote compaction
    explicitly disable v2.
    - Update parity coverage so v2 exercises the production default and only
    legacy mode opts out.

  • Add per-session realtime model and version overrides (#24999)
    ## Why

    Clients need to select a realtime session configuration for an
    individual start without rewriting persisted configuration or restarting
    the app-server process.

    ## What Changed

    - Add optional `model` and `version` fields to `thread/realtime/start`
    - Forward those optional values through the realtime start operation and
    apply them only for that session
    - Preserve existing configured/default behavior when the new fields are
    omitted
    - Update generated protocol schema and app-server documentation

    ## Validation

    - Added/updated protocol serialization coverage for the new optional
    request fields
    - Added focused core coverage for a session override taking precedence
    over configured realtime selection
    - Added focused app-server coverage that a request override reaches the
    realtime WebSocket handshake
  • Pair thread environment settings (#26687)
    ## Why

    Thread cwd and environment selections are a single logical setting in
    core: updating one without the other can silently desynchronize the
    next-turn execution context. This change makes that relationship
    explicit in the internal thread settings flow while preserving the
    existing app-server public API shape.

    ## What changed

    - Moved the cwd/environment pair through internal
    `ThreadSettingsOverrides.environment_settings` instead of a top-level
    internal `cwd` field.
    - Kept `thread/settings/update` public params unchanged, with app-server
    translating top-level `cwd` into the paired internal settings shape.
    - Moved `Op::UserInput` environment overrides into thread settings so
    user turns and settings updates use the same core path.
    - Updated core, app-server, MCP, memories, sample, and test callsites to
    construct the paired settings shape.

    ## Verification

    - `git diff --check`
    - Local test run starting after PR creation.
  • Add HTTP window ID to Responses client metadata (#26923)
    ## Summary

    - Keep the existing `x-codex-window-id` HTTP header unchanged.
    - Also send the same window ID in Responses `client_metadata`, allowing
    supported backend paths to surface it as
    `x-client-meta-x-codex-window-id`.
    - Cover normal HTTP Responses and remote compaction v2 requests without
    changing window generation or compaction behavior.

    ## Why

    In the `2026-06-06T23` production hour, all 28,729 HTTP compaction
    requests had `window_id` in `x-codex-turn-metadata`, but only 73
    retained the direct `x-codex-window-id` header. The request-body
    `client_metadata` path is already used for installation ID and is
    preserved through supported Responses API paths.

    This is additive metadata only. It does not change the direct header,
    request count, model input, compaction routing, window generation, or
    user response behavior.

    Legacy `/v1/responses/compact` is intentionally unchanged. Its current
    server-side `CompressBody` schema does not accept `client_metadata` and
    rejects unknown fields, so supporting that path requires a backend
    schema change before the Codex client can safely send this field.

    The focused server pytest could not start in the local monorepo

    `client_metadata` and `/v1/responses/compact` returns HTTP 400 for
    unknown body fields.
  • Require absolute cwd in thread settings (#26532)
    ## Why

    Thread settings cwd overrides are expected to be resolved before they
    enter core. Keeping this boundary as a plain `PathBuf` made it easy for
    core/session code to keep fallback normalization and relative-path
    resolution logic in places that should only receive an already-resolved
    cwd.

    This is intentionally the absolute-cwd-only slice: it does not change
    environment selection stickiness or cwd-to-default-environment fallback
    behavior.

    ## What changed

    - Changes `ThreadSettingsOverrides.cwd`,
    `CodexThreadSettingsOverrides.cwd`, and `SessionSettingsUpdate.cwd` to
    use `AbsolutePathBuf`.
    - Removes core-side cwd normalization/resolution from session settings
    updates.
    - Updates affected core/app-server test helpers and callsites to pass
    existing absolute cwd values or use `abs()` helpers.

    ## Validation

  • Rewrite oversized tool outputs during remote compaction (#26251)
    ## Why

    When trying to fit history under compaction limit rewrite output items
    instead of removing them entirely. Otherwise we're breaking
    incrementality in relation to the previous response.
  • app-server: remove experimental persist_extended_history bool flag (#25712)
    ## Summary

    Remove the dead experimental `persistExtendedHistory` app-server flag
    and collapse rollout persistence to the single policy app-server already
    used.

    ## What Changed

    - Removed `persistExtendedHistory` from v2 thread start/resume/fork
    params and deleted its deprecation notice path.
    - Removed the persistence-mode enums and plumbing through core, rollout,
    and thread-store.
    - Made rollout filtering mode-free, keeping the existing limited
    persisted-history behavior.

    ## Test Plan

    - `just write-app-server-schema`
    - `cargo nextest run --no-fail-fast -p codex-app-server-protocol

    - `cargo nextest run --no-fail-fast -p codex-rollout -p
    codex-thread-store`
    - final `rg` for removed flag/type names
  • [codex] add compaction metadata to turn headers (#24368)
    ## Summary
    - Add `request_kind` values for foreground turn, startup prewarm,
    compaction, and detached memory model requests.
    - Attach compaction dispatch metadata to local Responses, legacy
    `/v1/responses/compact`, and remote v2 compact requests.
    - Add the existing logical context-window identifier as `window_id` on
    turn-owned model request metadata.
    - Keep identity fields optional for detached memory requests, while
    still emitting `request_kind="memory"` in non-git/no-sandbox workspaces.

    ## Root Cause
    `x-codex-turn-metadata` has more than one producer. Foreground turns and
    compaction requests own a real turn and should carry that turn identity.
    Detached memory stage-one requests do not own a foreground turn, so
    absent identity fields are valid rather than missing data. Startup
    websocket prewarm is also a model request, but it has `generate=false`
    and must not be counted as a foreground turn.

    `thread_source` or session source identifies where a thread came from
    (for example review, guardian, or another subagent). `request_kind`
    identifies what the current outbound model request is doing (`turn`,
    `prewarm`, `compaction`, or `memory`). A review or guardian thread can
    issue either a normal turn request or a compaction request, so source
    cannot replace request kind.

    ## Behavior / Impact
    - Ordinary foreground requests send `request_kind="turn"`, their real
    identity fields, and `window_id="<thread_id>:<window_generation>"`.
    - Startup websocket warmup requests send `request_kind="prewarm"` so
    they are not counted as foreground turns.
    - Compaction requests send `request_kind="compaction"`, their real
    owning turn identity, the existing `window_id`, and
    `compaction.{trigger,reason,implementation,phase,strategy}`.
    - Detached memory stage-one requests send `request_kind="memory"`
    without `session_id`, `thread_id`, `turn_id`, or `window_id`; when no
    workspace metadata exists, the kind-only header is still emitted.
    - `session_id`, `thread_id`, `turn_id`, and `window_id` remain optional
    in the header schema because detached memory requests do not own a
    foreground turn or context window.
    - `window_id` is not a new ID system: it is copied from the already-sent
    `x-codex-window-id` / WS client metadata value at model-request dispatch
    time.
    - Existing `x-codex-window-id` HTTP/WS emission, value format,
    generation advancement, resume behavior, and fork reset behavior are
    unchanged.
    - `request_kind`, `window_id`, and upstream turn-owned identity fields
    remain schema-owned; input `responsesapi_client_metadata` cannot replace
    their canonical values.
    - No table, DAG, export, app-server API, or MCP `_meta` schema changes
    are included.

    A compaction attempt stopped by a pre-compact hook issues no model
    request and therefore has no request header; its outcome remains in
    analytics events. Status, error, duration, and token deltas also remain
    analytics fields rather than request-header fields.

    Future detached-memory attribution using a real initiating turn ID as
    `trigger_turn_id` is intentionally not part of this PR.

    ## Sync With Main
    - Final pushed head `716342e79` is rebased onto `origin/main@0d37db4b2`.
    - The metadata conflict came from upstream `#24160`, which added
    `forked_from_thread_id` on the same `turn_metadata` surface. Resolution
    preserves that field and its protection from client metadata override
    alongside this PR's request-kind, compaction, and window-id fields.
    - While resolving the overlapping commits, I removed an accidental
    recursive model-request overlay and a duplicate detached-memory header
    builder before completing the rebase.

    ## Latency / User Experience Boundary
    - Foreground turns perform no new filesystem, git, or network work. New
    fields are inserted into metadata already serialized for outgoing
    requests.
    - Compaction issues the same model/HTTP requests with the same prompt,
    model, service tier, and sampling settings; only metadata bytes change.
    - Startup prewarm already sent metadata; it is now correctly classified
    as `prewarm`.
    - Non-git detached memory now sends a small kind-only metadata header
    rather than no header.
    - This client diff adds no user-visible latency mechanism beyond
    negligible serialization and header bytes on already-existing requests.

  • Uprev Rust toolchain pins to 1.95.0 (#24684)
    ## Summary
    - Bump the workspace Rust toolchain from `1.93.0` to `1.95.0` across
    Cargo, Bazel, CI, release workflows, devcontainers, and the Codex
    environment config.
    - Refresh `MODULE.bazel.lock` so the Bazel Rust toolchain artifacts
    match the new version.
    - Leave purpose-specific toolchains unchanged, including the
    `argument-comment-lint` nightly and the upstream `rusty_v8` `1.91.0`
    build pin.
    - Includes fixes for new lints from `just fix` and a few codex-authored
    fixes for lints without a suggestion.
  • Add experimental turn additional context (#24154)
    ## Summary

    Adds experimental `additionalContext` support to `turn/start` and
    `turn/steer` so clients can provide ephemeral external context, such as
    browser or automation state, without turning that plumbing into a
    visible user prompt or triggering user-prompt lifecycle behavior.

    ## API Shape

    The parameter shape is:

    ```ts
    additionalContext?: Record<string, {
      value: string
      kind: "untrusted" | "application"
    }> | null
    ```

    Example:

    ```json
    {
      "additionalContext": {
        "browser_info": {
          "value": "Active tab is CI failures.",
          "kind": "untrusted"
        },
        "automation_info": {
          "value": "CI rerun is in progress.",
          "kind": "application"
        }
      }
    }
    ```

    The keys are opaque and caller-defined.

    ## Context Injection

    When provided, accepted entries are inserted into model context as
    hidden contextual message items, not as visible thread user-message
    items.

    `kind: "untrusted"` entries are inserted with role `user`:

    ```text
    <external_${key}>${value}</external_${key}>
    ```

    `kind: "application"` entries are inserted with role `developer`:

    ```text
    <${key}>${value}</${key}>
    ```

    Values are not escaped. Each value is truncated to 1k approximate tokens
    before wrapping.

    For `turn/start`, accepted additional context is inserted before normal
    user input. For `turn/steer`, additional context is merged only when the
    steer includes non-empty user input; context-only steers still reject as
    empty input.

    ## Dedupe Strategy

    `AdditionalContextStore` lives on session state and stores the latest
    complete additional-context map.

    Each `turn/start` or non-empty `turn/steer` treats its
    `additionalContext` as the current complete set of values. Entries are
    injected only when the key is new or the exact entry for that key
    changed, including `value` or `kind`. After merging, the store is
    replaced with the provided map, so omitted keys are removed from the
    retained set and can be injected again later if reintroduced.

    Omitting `additionalContext`, passing `null`, or passing an empty object
    resets the store to empty and injects nothing.

    ## What Changed

    - Threads experimental v2 `additionalContext` through app-server into
    core turn start and steer handling.
    - Adds separate contextual fragment types for untrusted user-role
    context and application developer-role context.
    - Uses pending response input items so additional context can be
    combined with normal user input without treating it as prompt text.
    - Adds integration coverage for start/steer flow, role routing,
    dedupe/reset behavior, deletion/re-add behavior, hook-blocked input
    behavior, empty context-only steer rejection, external-fragment marker
    matching, and truncation.
  • retry remote compaction v2 requests (#23951)
    ## Why

    Remote compaction v2 sends a normal `/responses` request with a
    compaction trigger. It should follow the retry semantics used by normal
    Responses streaming calls for transient stream/request failures, while
    keeping a smaller per-transport retry budget because compact attempts
    can run much longer than normal turns.

    ## What changed

    - Add a v2 compaction retry loop that uses `stream_max_retries`,
    matching normal Responses turn retry mechanics.
    - Cap the compact v2 retry budget at 2 retries per transport with
    `min(stream_max_retries, 2)`.
    - Retry retryable request-open and post-open stream collection failures
    through the same loop.
    - Use the existing 200ms exponential backoff and requested retry delay
    handling used by normal turn retries.
    - Emit the same `Reconnecting... n/max` stream-error notification
    pattern.
    - Fall back from WebSockets to HTTPS after the compact v2 stream retry
    budget is exhausted, then reset the retry counter for HTTPS.
    - Keep final remote-compaction failure logging after retries/fallback
    are exhausted.
    - Treat compact stream EOF before `response.completed` as a retryable
    stream failure.
    - Add compact v2 regression coverage with `request_max_retries = 0` and
    `stream_max_retries = 2`, covering both request-open failure and
    opened-stream EOF in one end-to-end test.

    ## Tests

    - `just fmt`
    - `cargo test -p codex-core remote_compact_v2`
    - `just fix -p codex-core`

  • [5 of 7] Replace OverrideTurnContext with ThreadSettings (#22508)
    **Stack position:** [5 of 7]

    ## Summary

    This PR adds `Op::ThreadSettings`, a queued settings-only update
    mechanism for changing stored thread settings without starting a new
    turn. It also removes the legacy `Op::OverrideTurnContext` in the same
    layer, so reviewers can see the replacement and deletion together.

    ## Changes

    - Add `Op::ThreadSettings` for settings-only queued updates.
    - Emit `ThreadSettingsApplied` with the effective thread settings
    snapshot after core applies an update.
    - Route settings-only updates through the same submission queue as user
    input.
    - Migrate remaining `OverrideTurnContext` tests and callers to the
    queued `Op::ThreadSettings` path.
    - Delete `Op::OverrideTurnContext` from the core protocol and submission
    loop.

    This stack addresses #20656 and #22090.

  • [1 of 7] Add thread settings to UserInput (#23080)
    **Stack position:** [1 of 7]

    ## Summary

    The first three PRs in this stack are a cleanup pass before the actual
    thread settings API work.

    Today, core has several overlapping "user input" ops: `UserInput`,
    `UserInputWithTurnContext`, and `UserTurn`. They differ mostly in how
    much next-turn state they carry, which makes the later queued thread
    settings update harder to reason about and review.

    This PR starts that cleanup by adding the shared
    `ThreadSettingsOverrides` payload and allowing `Op::UserInput` to carry
    it. Existing variants remain in place here, so this layer is mostly a
    behavior-preserving API shape change plus mechanical constructor
    updates.

    ## End State After PR3

    By the end of PR3, `Op::UserInput` is the only "user input" core op. It
    can carry optional thread settings overrides for callers that need to
    update stored defaults with a turn, while callers without updates use
    empty settings. `Op::UserInputWithTurnContext` and `Op::UserTurn` are
    deleted.

    ## End State After PR5

    By the end of PR5, core will have only two ops for this area:

    - `Op::UserInput` for user-input-bearing submissions.
    - `Op::ThreadSettings` for settings-only updates.

  • Preserve image detail in app-server inputs (#20693)
    ## Summary

    - Add optional image detail to user image inputs across core, app-server
    v2, thread history/event mapping, and the generated app-server
    schemas/types.
    - Preserve requested detail when serializing Responses image inputs:
    omitted detail stays on the existing `high` default, while explicit
    `original` keeps local images on the original-resolution path.
    - Support `high`/`original` consistently for tool image outputs,
    including MCP `codex/imageDetail`, code-mode image helpers, and
    `view_image`.
  • [codex] Use compaction_trigger item for remote compaction v2 (#22809)
    ## Why

    Remote compaction v2 was still using `context_compaction` as both the
    request trigger and the compacted output shape. The Responses API now
    has the landed contract for this flow: Codex sends a dedicated `{
    "type": "compaction_trigger" }` input item, and the backend returns the
    standard `compaction` output item with encrypted content.

    This aligns the v2 path with that wire contract while preserving the
    existing local compacted-history post-processing behavior.

    ## What changed

    - Add `ResponseItem::CompactionTrigger` and regenerate the app-server
    protocol schema fixtures.
    - Send `compaction_trigger` from `remote_compaction_v2` instead of a
    payload-less `context_compaction`.
    - Collect exactly one backend `compaction` output item, then reuse the
    existing compacted-history rebuilding path.
    - Treat the trigger item as a transient request marker rather than model
    output or persisted rollout/memory content.

  • [codex] Remove unused legacy shell tools (#22246)
    ## Why

    Recent session history showed no active use of the raw `shell`,
    `local_shell`, or `container.exec` execution surfaces. Keeping those
    handlers/specs wired into core leaves duplicate shell execution paths
    alongside the supported `shell_command` and unified exec tools.

    ## What changed

    - Removed the raw `shell` handler/spec and its `ShellToolCallParams`
    protocol helper.
    - Removed the legacy `local_shell` and `container.exec` handler/spec
    plumbing while preserving persisted-history compatibility for old
    response items.
    - Normalized model/config `default` and `local` shell selections to
    `shell_command`.
    - Pruned tests that exercised removed raw-shell/local-shell/apply-patch
    variants and kept coverage on `shell_command`, unified exec, and
    freeform `apply_patch`.

  • [codex] Harden overflow auto-compaction recovery (#22141)
    ## Why
    Dogfooder feedback exposed two correctness gaps in normal-loop overflow
    recovery:

    1. a sampling request that hit `ContextWindowExceeded` could keep
    re-entering auto-compaction indefinitely if the compacted retry still
    did not fit, and
    2. local compact-history rebuilds flattened user messages down to text,
    so an overflowing `[image, "what is this?"]` turn could be retried
    without the image after compaction.

    That means recovery could either fail to terminate cleanly or proceed
    with a materially weakened version of the user request.

    ## What changed
    - Move normal-loop `ContextWindowExceeded` handling into the sampling
    retry loop, so successful rescue compaction consumes the provider retry
    budget instead of creating an unbounded outer-turn loop.
    - Keep compacted user-history rebuilds structured:
    `collect_user_messages` now carries user `UserInput` content rather than
    flattened strings, and `build_compacted_history` reconstructs full user
    messages from that structured representation.
    - Preserve image inputs while retaining the existing text-budget
    truncation behavior for compacted user history.
    - Preserve existing compaction-task failure handling and client-session
    reset behavior while bounding repeated overflow retries.
    - Add focused regression coverage for:
      - recovery after a normal-loop overflow,
      - retry-budget exhaustion after repeated overflow,
      - local recovery preserving image + text input,
      - remote recovery preserving image + text input,
      - remote compaction v2 preserving image + text input, and
      - compaction failure still terminating cleanly.

    The main behavior changes are in `codex-rs/core/src/session/turn.rs` and
    `codex-rs/core/src/compact.rs`.

  • Omit service_tier from remote /responses/compact requests under API auth (#21676)
    ## Summary

    API-key-auth remote compaction requests should not inherit
    `service_tier` from normal `/responses` turns. This path needs to match
    API auth expectations, while ChatGPT-auth remote compaction should keep
    reusing the shared request fields that still apply there.

    This change keeps the decision inline in
    `codex-rs/core/src/compact_remote.rs` only. Under API key auth, the
    classic remote `/responses/compact` path now omits `service_tier`; under
    ChatGPT auth, it keeps reusing the configured tier.
    `codex-rs/core/src/compact_remote_v2.rs` is unchanged. The remote
    compaction parity coverage and snapshots were updated to assert the
    API-key omission and preserve the ChatGPT-auth behavior.

    ## Testing

    - Updated remote compaction parity coverage in
    `codex-rs/core/tests/suite/compact_remote.rs` and the corresponding
    snapshots.
  • 2- Use string service tiers in session protocol (#20971)
    ## Summary
    - break service tier session/op/app-server protocol fields from the
    closed enum to string tier ids
    - send the service tier string directly through model requests, prewarm,
    compaction, memories, and TUI/app-server turn starts
    - regenerate app-server protocol JSON/TypeScript schemas, removing the
    standalone ServiceTier TS enum

    ## Verification
    - just fmt
    - cargo check -p codex-core -p codex-app-server -p codex-tui
    - just write-app-server-schema

  • Propagate cache key and service tiers in compact (#21249)
    ## Why

    `/responses/compact` should preserve the request-affinity fields that
    apply to the active auth mode. ChatGPT-auth compact requests need the
    effective `service_tier`, and compact requests for every auth mode need
    the stable `prompt_cache_key`, so compaction does not quietly lose
    routing or cache behavior that normal sampling already has.

    This follows the request-parity direction from #20719, but keeps the net
    change focused on the compact payload fields needed here.

    ## What changed

    - Add `service_tier` and `prompt_cache_key` to the compact endpoint
    input payload.
    - Build the remote compact payload from the existing responses request
    builder output so `Fast` still maps to `priority` when compact sends a
    service tier.
    - Pass the turn service tier into remote compaction, but only include it
    in compact payloads for ChatGPT-backed auth.
    - Keep `prompt_cache_key` on compact payloads for all auth modes.
    - Add request-body diff snapshot coverage in
    `core/tests/suite/compact_remote.rs` for:
    - API-key auth reusing `prompt_cache_key` while omitting `service_tier`
    even when `Fast` is configured.
      - ChatGPT auth reusing both `service_tier` and `prompt_cache_key`.
    - Drive the snapshot coverage through five varied turns: plain text,
    multi-part text, tool-call continuation, image+text input, local-shell
    continuation, and final-turn reasoning output.

    ## Verification

    - Added insta snapshots for compact request-body parity against the last
    normal `/responses` request after five varied turns.
    - Not run locally per repo guidance; relying on GitHub CI for test
    execution.

  • feat: add session_id (#20437)
    ## Summary

    Related to
    https://openai.slack.com/archives/C095U48JNL9/p1777537279707449
    TLDR:
    We update the meaning of session ids and thread ids:
    * thread_id stays as now
    * session_id become a shared id between every thread under a /root
    thread (i.e. every sub-agent share the same session id)

    This PR introduces an explicit `SessionId` and threads it through the
    protocol/client boundary so `session_id` and `thread_id` can diverge
    when they need to, while preserving compatibility for older serialized
    `session_configured` events.

  • feat: add remote compaction v2 Responses client path (#20773)
    ## Why

    This adds the `remote_compaction_v2` client path so remote compaction
    can run through the normal Responses stream and install a
    `context_compaction` item that trigger a compaction.

    The goal is to migrate some of the compaction logic on the client side

    We keeps the v2 transport behind a feature flag while letting follow-up
    requests reuse the compacted context instead of falling back to the
    legacy compaction item shape.

    ## What changed

    - add `ResponseItem::ContextCompaction` and refresh the generated
    app-server / schema / TypeScript fixtures that expose response items on
    the wire
    - add `core/src/compact_remote_v2.rs` to send compaction through the
    standard streamed Responses client, require exactly one
    `context_compaction` output item, and install that item into compacted
    history
    - route manual compact and auto-compaction through the v2 path when
    `remote_compaction_v2` is enabled, while keeping the existing remote
    compaction path as the fallback
    - preserve the new item type across history retention, follow-up request
    construction, telemetry, rollout persistence, and rollout-trace
    normalization
    - add targeted coverage for the feature flag, `context_compaction`
    serialization, rollout-trace normalization, and remote-compaction
    follow-up behavior

    ## Verification

    - added protocol tests for `context_compaction`
    serialization/deserialization in `protocol/src/models.rs`
    - added rollout-trace coverage for `context_compaction` normalization in
    `rollout-trace/src/reducer/conversation_tests.rs`
    - added remote compaction integration coverage for v2 follow-up reuse
    and mixed compaction output streams in
    `core/tests/suite/compact_remote.rs`

  • Make thread store process-scoped (#19474)
    - Build one app-server process ThreadStore from startup config and share
    it with ThreadManager and CodexMessageProcessor.
    - Remove per-thread/fork store reconstruction so effective thread config
    cannot switch the persistence backend.
    - Add params to ThreadStore create/resume for specifying thread
    metadata, since otherwise the metadata from store creation would be used
    (incorrectly).
  • realtime: rename provider session ids (#20361)
    ## Summary

    Codex is repurposing `session` to mean a thread group, so the realtime
    provider session id should no longer use `session_id` / `sessionId` in
    Codex-facing protocol payloads. This PR renames that provider-specific
    field to `realtime_session_id` / `realtimeSessionId` and intentionally
    breaks clients that still send the old field names.

    ## What Changed

    - Renamed realtime provider session fields in `ConversationStartParams`,
    `RealtimeConversationStartedEvent`, and `RealtimeEvent::SessionUpdated`.
    - Renamed app-server v2 realtime request and notification fields to
    `realtimeSessionId`.
    - Removed legacy serde aliases for `session_id` / `sessionId`; clients
    must send the new names.
    - Propagated the rename through core realtime startup, app-server
    adapters, codex-api websocket handling, and TUI realtime state.
    - Regenerated app-server protocol schema/TypeScript outputs and updated
    app-server README examples.
    - Kept upstream Realtime API concepts unchanged: provider `session.id`
    parsing and `x-session-id` headers still use the upstream wire names.

    ## Testing

  • fix: filter dynamic deferred tools from model_visible_specs (#19771)
    fixes #19486

    ### Problem
    Right now dynamic deferred tools are filtered at normal-turn prompt
    building time, rather than upstream while building the `ToolRouter`
    itself. This causes issues because dynamic deferred tools are then
    wrongly included in the router's `model_visible_specs`, which is what
    the compaction request-building flow relies on.

    ### Fix
    Move the dynamic deferred tool filtering to `ToolRouter` creation time
    to solve this problem for every request that relies on `ToolRouter` for
    `model_visible_specs`, which solves the issue generically.

    ### Tests
    Added unit + integration tests to ensure dynamic deferred tools are
    omitted from `model_visible_specs` and compaction request respectively.

    Tested against live `/compact` endpoint; raw deferred dynamic tools
    without `tool_search` returned `400` (current bug), while the filtered
    payload (this fix) returns `200`.
  • app-server: accept permission profile overrides (#18279)
    ## Why

    `PermissionProfile` is becoming the canonical permissions shape shared
    by core and app-server. After app-server responses expose the active
    profile, clients need to be able to send that same shape back when
    starting, resuming, forking, or overriding a turn instead of translating
    through the legacy `sandbox`/`sandboxPolicy` shorthands.

    This still needs to preserve the existing requirements/platform
    enforcement model. A profile-shaped request can be downgraded or
    rejected by constraints, but the server should keep the user's
    elevated-access intent for project trust decisions. Turn-level profile
    overrides also need to retain existing read protections, including
    deny-read entries and bounded glob-scan metadata, so a permission
    override cannot accidentally drop configured protections such as
    `**/*.env = deny`.

    ## What changed

    - Adds optional `permissionProfile` request fields to `thread/start`,
    `thread/resume`, `thread/fork`, and `turn/start`.
    - Rejects ambiguous requests that specify both `permissionProfile` and
    the legacy `sandbox`/`sandboxPolicy` fields, including running-thread
    resume requests.
    - Converts profile-shaped overrides into core runtime filesystem/network
    permissions while continuing to derive the constrained legacy sandbox
    projection used by existing execution paths.
    - Preserves project-trust intent for profile overrides that are
    equivalent to workspace-write or full-access sandbox requests.
    - Preserves existing deny-read entries and `globScanMaxDepth` when
    applying turn-level `permissionProfile` overrides.
    - Updates app-server docs plus generated JSON/TypeScript schema fixtures
    and regression coverage.

    ## Verification

  • Add turn-scoped environment selections (#18416)

    environment id + cwd selections
    - pass selections through core protocol ops and resolve them with

  • protocol: canonicalize file system permissions (#18274)
    ## Why

    `PermissionProfile` needs stable, canonical file-system semantics before
    it can become the primary runtime permissions abstraction. Without a
    canonical form, callers have to keep re-deriving legacy sandbox maps and
    profile comparisons remain lossy or order-dependent.

    ## What changed

    This adds canonicalization helpers for `FileSystemPermissions` and
    `PermissionProfile`, expands special paths into explicit sandbox
    entries, and updates permission request/conversion paths to consume
    those canonical entries. It also tightens the legacy bridge so root-wide
    write profiles with narrower carveouts are not silently projected as
    full-disk legacy access.

    ## Verification

  • Forward app-server turn clientMetadata to Responses (#16009)
    ## Summary
    App-server v2 already receives turn-scoped `clientMetadata`, but the
    Rust app-server was dropping it before the outbound Responses request.
    This change keeps the fix lightweight by threading that metadata through
    the existing turn-metadata path rather than inventing a new transport.

    ## What we're trying to do and why
    We want turn-scoped metadata from the app-server protocol layer,
    especially fields like Hermes/GAAS run IDs, to survive all the way to
    the actual Responses API request so it is visible in downstream
    websocket request logging and analytics.

    The specific bug was:
    - app-server protocol uses camelCase `clientMetadata`
    - Responses transport already has an existing turn metadata carrier:
    `x-codex-turn-metadata`
    - websocket transport already rewrites that header into
    `request.request_body.client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`
    - but the Rust app-server never parsed or stored `clientMetadata`, so
    nothing from the app-server request was making it into that existing
    path

    This PR fixes that without adding a new header or a second metadata
    channel.

    ## How we did it
    ### Protocol surface
    - Add optional `clientMetadata` to v2 `TurnStartParams` and
    `TurnSteerParams`
    - Regenerate the JSON schema / TypeScript fixtures
    - Update app-server docs to describe the field and its behavior

    ### Runtime plumbing
    - Add a dedicated core op for app-server user input carrying turn-scoped
    metadata: `Op::UserInputWithClientMetadata`
    - Wire `turn/start` and `turn/steer` through that op / signature path
    instead of dropping the metadata at the message-processor boundary
    - Store the metadata in `TurnMetadataState`

    ### Transport behavior
    - Reuse the existing serialized `x-codex-turn-metadata` payload
    - Merge the new app-server `clientMetadata` into that JSON additively
    - Do **not** replace built-in reserved fields already present in the
    turn metadata payload
    - Keep websocket behavior unchanged at the outer shape level: it still
    sends only `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`, but that JSON
    string now contains the merged fields
    - Keep HTTP fallback behavior unchanged except that the existing
    `x-codex-turn-metadata` header now includes the merged fields too

    ### Request shape before / after
    Before, a websocket `response.create` looked like:
    ```json
    {
      "type": "response.create",
      "client_metadata": {
        "x-codex-turn-metadata": "{\"session_id\":\"...\",\"turn_id\":\"...\"}"
      }
    }
    ```
    Even if the app-server caller supplied `clientMetadata`, it was not
    represented there.

    After, the same request shape is preserved, but the serialized payload
    now includes the new turn-scoped fields:
    ```json
    {
      "type": "response.create",
      "client_metadata": {
        "x-codex-turn-metadata": "{\"session_id\":\"...\",\"turn_id\":\"...\",\"fiber_run_id\":\"fiber-start-123\",\"origin\":\"gaas\"}"
      }
    }
    ```

    ## Validation
    ### Targeted tests added / updated
    - protocol round-trip coverage for `clientMetadata` on `turn/start` and
    `turn/steer`
    - protocol round-trip coverage for `Op::UserInputWithClientMetadata`
    - `TurnMetadataState` merge test proving client metadata is added
    without overwriting reserved built-in fields
    - websocket request-shape test proving outbound `response.create`
    contains merged metadata inside
    `client_metadata["x-codex-turn-metadata"]`
    - app-server integration tests proving:
    - `turn/start` forwards `clientMetadata` into the outbound Responses
    request path
      - websocket warmup + real turn request both behave correctly
      - `turn/steer` updates the follow-up request metadata
