## Stack note
[#27365](https://github.com/openai/codex/pull/27365) kept `thread/start`
unchanged and converted its input in `thread_processor`. This PR updates
`thread/start` to accept explicit functions and namespaces directly.
Legacy per-tool arrays are still accepted and converted while reading
the request. As a result, `thread_processor` can validate and pass the
tools through directly, which is why some code added in #27365 is
removed here.
## Why
`thread/start.dynamicTools` still repeats namespace data on each
function even though core now stores explicit namespace groups. The
request API should use the same shape so each namespace has one
description and one member list.
## What changed
- Accept top-level functions and explicit namespace objects in
`dynamicTools`.
- Continue accepting fully legacy flat arrays, including
`exposeToContext`.
- Reject arrays that mix legacy and canonical entries.
- Reuse the protocol types directly and remove the temporary app-server
adapter.
- Update validation, docs, the test client, and generated schemas.

The End
(Admittedly, most of the local variables for `TestAppServer` are still
named `mcp`, though.)
## Summary
Adds an optional `clientId` field to app-server v2 `UserInput` and
carries it through the core `UserInput` model so clients can correlate
echoed user input items without relying on payload equality.
## Details
- Adds `client_id: Option<String>` to core `UserInput` variants.
- Exposes the v2 app-server field as `clientId` on the wire and in
generated TypeScript.
- Preserves the id when converting between app-server v2 and core
protocol types.
- Regenerates app-server schema fixtures.

## Why
When the TUI resumes a thread through the local app-server daemon with a
selected workspace, `thread/resume` can hit an already-loaded but idle
cached thread. That path previously rejoined the cached `CodexThread`,
so cwd/config overrides in `ThreadResumeParams` were ignored and the
resumed session kept using the old cwd.
## What changed
App-server now treats a loaded-but-idle thread with no subscribers as a
cache entry when resume overrides differ: it unloads that cached thread
and lets the normal resume path rebuild it with the requested
cwd/config. Threads that still have subscribers, or active runtime work,
continue to rejoin the existing loaded thread so in-flight state remains
observable.
The existing thread teardown helper was generalized from
archive-specific cleanup to shared unload cleanup for this path.
Deferred dynamic tools need to round-trip a namespace so a tool returned
by `tool_search` can be called through the same registry key that core
uses for dispatch.
This change adds namespace support for dynamic tool specs/calls,
persists it through app-server thread state, and routes dynamic tool
calls by full `ToolName` while still sending the app the leaf tool name.
Deferred dynamic tools must provide a namespace; non-deferred dynamic
tools may remain top-level.
It also introduces `LoadableToolSpec` as the shared
function-or-namespace Responses shape used by both `tool_search` output
and dynamic tool registration, so dynamic tools use the same wrapping
logic in both paths.

To improve performance of UI loads from the app, add two main
improvements:
1. The `thread/list` api now gets a `sortDirection` request field and a
`backwardsCursor` to the response, which lets you paginate forwards and
backwards from a window. This lets you fetch the first few items to
display immediately while you paginate to fill in history, then can
paginate "backwards" on future loads to catch up with any changes since
the last UI load without a full reload of the entire data set.
2. Added a new `thread/turns/list` api which also has sortDirection and
backwardsCursor for the same behavior as `thread/list`, allowing you the
same small-fetch for immediate display followed by background fill-in
and resync catchup.
## Summary
- replace the unsubscribe-during-turn test's sleep/polling flow with a
gated streaming SSE response
- add request-count notification support to the streaming SSE test
server so the test can wait for the in-flight Responses request
deterministically

Make sure Bazel logs shows every errors so that we can debug flakes +
fix a small flake on Windows by updating the sleep command to a
`Start-Sleep` instead of a PowerShell nested command (otherwise we had
double nesting which is absurdely slow)
Currently app-server may unload actively running threads once the last
connection disconnects, which is not expected.
Instead track when was the last active turn & when there were any
subscribers the last time, also add 30 minute idleness/no subscribers
timer to reduce the churn.
## Why
`argument-comment-lint` was green in CI even though the repo still had
many uncommented literal arguments. The main gap was target coverage:
the repo wrapper did not force Cargo to inspect test-only call sites, so
examples like the `latest_session_lookup_params(true, ...)` tests in
`codex-rs/tui_app_server/src/lib.rs` never entered the blocking CI path.
This change cleans up the existing backlog, makes the default repo lint
path cover all Cargo targets, and starts rolling that stricter CI
enforcement out on the platform where it is currently validated.
## What changed
- mechanically fixed existing `argument-comment-lint` violations across
the `codex-rs` workspace, including tests, examples, and benches
- updated `tools/argument-comment-lint/run-prebuilt-linter.sh` and
`tools/argument-comment-lint/run.sh` so non-`--fix` runs default to
`--all-targets` unless the caller explicitly narrows the target set
- fixed both wrappers so forwarded cargo arguments after `--` are
preserved with a single separator
- documented the new default behavior in
`tools/argument-comment-lint/README.md`
- updated `rust-ci` so the macOS lint lane keeps the plain wrapper
invocation and therefore enforces `--all-targets`, while Linux and
Windows temporarily pass `-- --lib --bins`
That temporary CI split keeps the stricter all-targets check where it is
already cleaned up, while leaving room to finish the remaining Linux-
and Windows-specific target-gated cleanup before enabling
`--all-targets` on those runners. The Linux and Windows failures on the
intermediate revision were caused by the wrapper forwarding bug, not by
additional lint findings in those lanes.

## What changed
- This PR changes only the flaky test setup for
`turn_start_notify_payload_includes_initialize_client_name`.
- Instead of shelling out to `python3` to write the notify payload, the
test uses the first-party `codex-app-server-test-notify-capture` helper.
- The helper writes `notify.json` atomically and the test waits for the
file to exist before reading it.
## Why this fixes the flake
- The old test depended on an external Python interpreter being present
and behaving consistently on every CI runner.
- It also raced the file write: the test could observe the path before
the payload had been fully written, which produced partial reads and
intermittent assertion failures.
- Moving the write into a repo-owned helper removes the external
dependency, and atomic write-plus-wait makes the handoff deterministic.
## Scope
- Test-only change.

- restore the guardian review request snapshot test and its tracked
snapshot after it was dropped from `main`
- make Bazel Rust unit-test wrappers resolve runfiles correctly on
manifest-only platforms like macOS and point Insta at the real workspace

Adds a new v2 app-server API for a client to be able to unsubscribe to a
thread:
- New RPC method: `thread/unsubscribe`
- New server notification: `thread/closed`
Today clients can start/resume/archive threads, but there wasn’t a way
to explicitly unload a live thread from memory without archiving it.
With `thread/unsubscribe`, a client can indicate it is no longer
actively working with a live Thread. If this is the only client
subscribed to that given thread, the thread will be automatically closed
by app-server, at which point the server will send `thread/closed` and
`thread/status/changed` with `status: notLoaded` notifications.
This gives clients a way to prevent long-running app-server processes
from accumulating too many thread (and related) objects in memory.
Closed threads will also be removed from `thread/loaded/list`.
